It sounds like the gunman was barely old enough to vote. This is a sad sad story. I see no reason why this thread should be shut down, it's not political. It's about a sad and tragic event happening to a politician.

Tragic is not strong enough a word for this. Reprehensible also fails for me. This event rattles my nerves in ways that have not occured in a decade.

This should be dealt with by means of a very public execution for the person responsible. My thoughts, hopes and prayers go out to the gentle Congresswoman, her family, friends, supporters and the people of the great state of Arizona.

Truely sad, haven't heard anything on the gunman but the news I have say she was shot at point blank range. Obviously not random, more so she was targeted. Seeing her stance on border security and immagration reform, One can only speculate if some nutjob from Larazza or a mexican cartel had her in their sights. Regardless, we all pray she survives and continues to serve her people.

The gunman is in custody... no details yet, but IF they are related in any way to the drug lords of Mexico, this should be treaded as an act of War, the cartels branded as terrorist oganization, and dealt with accordingly.

The violence in Arizona is very unreported and discussed. Few people realize that it is the kidnapping capital of the country and hit squads funded from the Cartels operate regularly and openly at times. I have always supported the ability to purchase and bear arms for the protection of your home and family, it is sad to see others using to further their criminal or mental pursuits.

I read a few comments on how the weapons needed to be controlled. Do these idiots really think that this dirt bag wouldn't have been able to aquire one leagally? I would guess that he didn't aquire it leagally anyway.

That is why IF is in big bold letters... I will not take this thread into the ploitical realm, but with the border conditions these days and with the drug lords decapitating people just south of our borders, nothing is out of the realm of possibility. I stand by the comment, just glad it appears to be unrelated.

His favorite reading material was Mein Kamph and the Communist Manifesto. Says he was also going through MEPS (military enlistment) processing in Phoenix and he was offended that he was offered a bible to read.... His middle name is Lee.

    From Yahoo:
"His exact motivation was not immediately clear. Federal law enforcement officials were poring over captured versions of a MySpace page that belonged to Jared Loughner and over Youtube video published to the Internet weeks ago under an account "Classitup10" and linked to him. The MySpace page, which was removed within minutes of the gunman being identified by U.S. officials, included a mysterious "Goodbye friends" message published hours before the shooting and exhorted his friends to "Please don't be mad at me."

In one of several Youtube videos, which featured text against a dark background, Loughner described inventing a new U.S. currency and complained about the illiteracy rate among people living in Giffords' congressional district in Arizona. Two spellings of his last name were given in the aftermath of the shooting — Loughner and Laughner.

"I know who's listening: Government Officials, and the People," Loughner wrote. "Nearly all the people, who don't know this accurate information of a new currency, aren't aware of mind control and brainwash methods. If I have my civil rights, then this message wouldn't have happen (sic).""

I'm sure neighbors will say we was a quite loner, but in recent weeks leading to the shooting start to act more and more irrationally. Then we will discover he went off his meds weeks before the shooting, had a troubled childhood, his parents will say they had no clue, and somehow obtained the gun despite a history of mental illness. We have heard this story too many times.

This has NOTHING to do with "the wild west", or gun control, or the border situation. This is ALL about a total whack job who just totally f@&*ed up a bunch of people's lives and nothing else. God help the families and the survivors.

this has EVERYTHING to do with gun control...or should i say it WILL in its aftermath.

and this will be spinned to work against the tea party movement and conservativism in general. it shouldn't but it will. that much is obvious.

Funny that the left will paint an anarchist left wing loon as a right-wing nut and get away with it.

    Gun law should be simple...

commit crime with gun = 25years to life

Injure with gun during a crime = life without parole for the first 25 years

Kill with a gun during a crime = death sentence to be caried out 90 days from sentencing.
