My son's Xbox 360 is giving him trouble, it won't play the new game Black-ops. It doesn't even load the game, so he never gets to the intro screen.

He gets a disk error message while playing his other games after 15 to 30 minutes of play time.

I bought a new disk drive and swapped out the control board with the same results.

Just so you know I don't play video games and never use his system, so it's probably something simple.
any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hook it up to the internet and get it updated. The Xbox 360 is a very flawed machine. You might have to have it serviced , this is very common.

Thanks Dan, I'll try to update it and see if that works.

Make sure there is enough hard disk space. I believe Black Ops is about 3-4GB. If there is not enough space, delete old games not played.

Make sure you're connected to the web to recieve updates.

Finally, make sure the parental controls are turned off to allow him to play rated M games. You'll find this in the Xbox setup menu.

What kind of Xbox 360 is it? For example, is it white or black, arcade or elite, the thick version or thin version? Also if you look on the back of the Xbox there is 3 different numbers, MFR Date, Serial Number, and Product ID. Let me know more of a description and I'll do everything I can to help you out.

I had one of the very first 360's and what you're describing is what happened to mine before the dreaded RROD (Red Ring of Death).

I don't know what it's called but it has a white slightly curved case with a black face plate. Manufacture date is 2006-07-22.....ID#77109201059992162907.

I did go to Microsoft's website and downloaded the update, and I still have the not reading the Black-ops disk problem, other games seem to play ok. I had the disk checked out on another machine and it worked fine.

    Thanks for your help

I'm sorry to do this to you again, but does your Xbox have HDMI? I'm asking because I'm trying to figure out what chipset/motherboard is installed (unless you know already know it). Also, what errors is your Xbox displaying?

Here's a better guide on how to figure it out your chipset. Look above the power connector on the Xbox and find the corresponding number and reference it to this web article (or notice the actual power input. All 3 Xbox's have a distinct input). http://www.examiner.com/xbox-360-in-seattle/easy-guide-to-identify-your-360-chip-set

If you have one of the older Xenon/Zephyr Xbox's, then I would put money on the fact your console is working on it's last leg.

I had the same issue with a new copy of Black-Ops on my original first generation 360 that would just not read. When I upgraded my 360 to the new slim it worked fine. I do believe they have some compatibility issues with the first gen 360's.

Sorry, I don't know the exact date the Elite came out or what manufacturing date is printed on the back of those consoles. Since you wanna be a dick, then you can help this guy out. Peace.

My machine would not load certain games and then I swapped out the disk drive and it worked so its puzzling

If you have the elite then I assume you had to use a brand new benQ drive
