Not the best pic in the world, but you get the idea. Panasonic TC-P58S2, 58" plasma:

Congrats Steve on a fine TV. CNET.com has some good info on this model. I was trying to see if they calibrated settings for it but maybe I just missed it.

I went the other way, grabbing a 58" Samsung instead, but I'm also very pleased with it and am very happy I went with plasma over LCD.

Yours is bigger than mine

Gotta love a good sized plasma.

I've got a 50" plasma in the family room and the kids have their 38" LCD in the play room.

I've watched movies on both - prefer the plasma!

Looks great. Are you still thinking of wall mounting it? I live in earthquake country, so the piece of mind in bolting it to the wall was important. But it looks nice how it is.

Yes. Gotta order some longer HDMI cables, grab a wireworld cable raceway, and pick a mount.

We found that out when we arrived at Sears to pick it up. Luckily, we were able to tilt it enough to clear the trucks shell, then set it up straight once it was all the way in.

I meant once it's out of the box, like when attaching a mount to the back of the TV. Too much torsional flex/stress, sumthin like that.

    http://hdguru.com/setting-up-your-new-hdtv-2/1183/

If Santa delivered a new HDTV to your home today, use this list to help get your HDTV up, running and looking good. Please read the owner’s manual before proceeding.

    1) Get It Ready

If it is flat, (LCD or Plasma) the HDTV may need attachment to its table stand (if you’re not wall mounting it.). This requires two or more people. Remember; NEVER LAY A FLAT TV ON ITS FACE OR BACK. HOLD IT UP (vertical) BY HAVING IT SUPPORTED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BEZEL THAT SURROUNDS THE SCREEN. TO KEEP THE SET VERTICAL HAVE SOMEONE HOLD IT UP TO KEEP IT FROM FALLING OVER UNTIL IT IS PROPERLY ATTACHED TO THE TABLE STAND. NEVER PLACE ANY PRESSURE ON THE SCREEN (SUCH AS YOU PALM) DON’T TOUCH THE SCREEN. IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH PRESSURE TO CRACK IT! If the screen cracks, the HDTV is destroyed. Always lift by it by the bottom of the outside of the bezel; you may also steady it by grabbing the edges and sides of the bezel.

An added note. While we still don’t recommend laying the TV on its face, the danger is reduced the smaller the screen size and the lighter the display. If you choose to ignore our warning, please make sure the surface you want to lay it on is perfectly flat with no packing materials , dirt or debris on the floor surface. If it is not perfectly flat, the pressure created by an object protruding above the floor can be sufficient to crack the screen, ruining your new HDTV and your holiday.

    Hi Steve,
I had the same TC-P58S2 delivered to the house yesterday. I love the picture. I checked lots of reviews and looked and plenty of TVs before settling on this set. I started out thinking I was going to pick up an LCD but after comparing the LCD picture quality Vs plasma I had to go with plasma.
    Enjoy,

Kewl, funny how you have to turn all those features off to get the best picture.

Pretty standard doing this on all new TVs.

    Steve,
I see you posted that you selected HD size 2 over size 1 under aspect ratios. What is the advantage of 2 over 1?
    Thanks,

"HD Size 2" is actually correct (1080p) pixel-to-pixel scaling. Size 1 zooms the image 5% (thought to reduce nasties on the edge of broadcast screens). If the setting is grayed out, connect your bluray player to the input, and change the setting to HD Size 2; then reconnect your HDTV receiver back to the input. I think the TV is looking for a 1080p input before it will allow you to change the HD Size parameter, and the DirecTV only goes to 1080i (unless you have a 1080p PPV movie playing).

Color decoding looks very good (DVE blue screen pattern), though tint had to be bumped up (towards green) to perfect it. I hear this is normal for the S2 series in cinema mode. Also, don't assume sharpness to be set to "0". I found "0" to be a little soft, a setting of "12" had very slight ringing (DVE pattern), so I backed it down to "10" which was perfect.

If you don't already have it, get you a DVE cal disc. My settings will get you in the ballpark, but every set is different (as well as in-room lighting).
