When people deserve a smackdown, you need to administer. Or their their 'assitudes' will go unchecked and ruin us all.

Tell the clerk that YOU are the next one in line. In fact, the ONLY one in THIS line. Polite, but firm about it.. and if the snarkiness continues, ask to speak to someone with a bigger name tag.

Btw, you felt bad because of her statement? I hate to say it but the more I stick around reading this kind of s@#t on forums the more I realize we've got generation upon generation of pansies among us.

Well, it was a young female checker and two middle aged ladies in the next line. I'm a fairly big 53 year old male. Not the place to make a scene and not even worth it.

If she didn't mean the next customer After You, then she was inexcusably rude and unprofessional, and you did not overreact. We all have store line horror stories. You are very understandably pissed.

I just wonder if there was a way to express this and make a pointed message? Don't know. Go too far and you've lost the moment. You did OK.

I just use my Amazon Prime account. 90% of stuff arrives next day since there is a Warehouse in Lexington.

As an example I needed a parallel cable: $2.99 shipped over-night. I don't bother with brick and mortor if I can avoid it.

Thanks Munk. Yeah, it all happened pretty quick. But I'm old enough to know fighting over space in line with some middle age women wasn't going to cast me in the best light and wasn't worth the fight or the time to make a scene. But, in retrospect, the checker clearly screwed up by throwing me out of line.

Best wishes for a good new year for you as well.

Me too, but I needed some paper to print out some last minute state returns for one of my businesses that needed a postal stamp of 12-31-10. I also needed some bubble wrap to pack up some cd's and such I'm "karma-ing" here that I want to send off first thing Monday.

""I can help the next person in line here !".

    YOU:

"Do you think these pants make my butt look fat ?"

Then just stand there. And look at her. And don't say a word.
The key is, have some fun.
Worst case, she still stays snippy, in which case you tell her, as you leave with the stuff on her counter, "I just knew it ! I'll be back, I have to go home and change these pants !!".

Again .... the key is, "Have some fun !"

I always wait until called, just habit. Ive been in a couple situations where I felt I was treated rudely and simply walked out, left everything on the counter. Sorry, but I'm courteous and even if I'm not all smiles and backflips at the checkout, don't take your day out on me. I'm never in that much of a hurry that I cannot, won't and haven't taken my business elsewhere.

Take a moment and change the people around me? I walk around in a bubble whenever possible.

Well, I wasn't entirely sure at the time if I'd breached some etiquete I was unaware of. That's really the issue I was trying to get at when I started this thread (although many people took it many ways). I've done that before and, thinking I was in the right, made a complete arse of myself (no arse jokes please).

Plus I'm still not convinced fighting over position in line with some middle aged woman and making a scene constitutes having "balls," especially when in doubt.:smile:

No one said anything about creating a scene. It's the fact that you; went out of your way to Staples (whether you walked, drove, road a bike), gathered a few things with the intent to purchase them, and because of a simple remark you changed your mind to buy anything and left.

I don't know if you did it to 'hurt' their sales for the day, or if the comment was just too much for you to handle. However, I don't see a reason why you shouldn't have bought whatever it was you were going to buy.

I don't let others inconvenience my actions.......IMO, you got huffy and puffy and you coudln't blow a house down......kinda worthless if you ask me.

If I'd have gone out of my way to get something at a place that is the only readily available option, I'd have made the purchase and then had a conversation about it with either the manager or higher about how they could have addressed a situation better.

I once got someone fired for the way they handled a tire purchase/installation. I'm not proud of it, but I wasn't about to let someone pull the same type of BS on someone else later.....

I didnt then and dont know now how you were thrown out of line by anyone. You could simply have put your items on the sales counter and waited for her to check you out. Unless she grabbed you by the waist and moved you away she didndt throw you out of anywhere, you left of your own accord she won you lost.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Thanks Snow, pretty much what I was getting at.

Look, the counter lady asked for the next person in line by leaning around me and calling out to the line next to me, the middle aged lady about bowled me over getting in front of me and laying her armful of stuff on the counter.

    A) I was a little surprised by what happened. After the fact it's easy to say woulda, shoulda coulda. But this all happened pretty quick.
    B) No, I wasn't going to challenge the middle aged lady, I was brought up to be respectful to women, maybe you guys were brought up differently
    C) And HELL NO, I wasn't going to wait in line any longer and argue to PAY THEM MONEY after being treated like that and waste any more time there.

As I stated earlier, my original thought was I had breached some etiquette or something I was not aware of. Anyway, I threw the situation out on this board just to get some reasoned input regarding queuing and such.

That's where I made my second mistake of the day, coming to this board looking for "reasoned input" from you clowns.:rolleyes:

An internet community can be a good place to get quick input, help or opinions from a diverse group of people. There's an element on this board seemingly intent on spoiling that for Club Polk - too bad.

Anyway, I'm off this topic. I got the input I was looking for. Consensus is the counter person was out of line and maybe I should have actually reacted more strongly than I did. I'll store it away for future use.

    Happy New Year everyone,

    Chris
