Did I Over React ?

There's a Staples Office Supply place I use by my house. Seems like the check out experience is always slow and painful. Only one long line is open or the manager always has to come to the front to review something. Hard place to grab a couple things and get outta there. But I use the place because it is the only close office supply to my house.

Today I was there and grabbed a couple things and headed to the check out area. I was thrilled to see 3, short lines going. The customer service area to the left was checking out 1 person and there were 2 people in the center lane. The right lane only had one guy who was gathering his stuff up to leave.

I selected the right lane and set my stuff on the counter and reached for my wallet. Well, the check out lady leaned around me and said in a very loud (snarky) voice, "I can help the next person in line here." Shocked, I gathered my stuff and stepped back. After thinking about it for a few seconds, I put my stuff back on the shelf and walked out of the place.

Maybe my previous experience there effected what I did, I don't know. But most every place I've ever been to that has multiple lines like grocery stores, etc, even if you pick the shortest line you're entitled to your spot. These were clearly separate lines, not like a place where's there's one line waiting for multiple checkers.

Did I over react? What would you have done?

Chris

I would have kicked you in the shins just for being you and then knocked all your crap out of your hands. When you bent over to pick it all up, I would have dumped JuJuBes in your hair and then pointed and laughed at you the entire time I followed you to your car.

Wow... you actually put the crap back on the shelves??

I would've told her that I am the next in line. If she still has a problem with that and wants to be a **** about it then I'd leave the crap right there with her an walk out with some nice parting words.

It's only an extra minute or two out of our lives. Sometimes we need to slow down. I see first hand how life is short. No need to worry about an extra minute in the checkout line. What would you have done with that extra minute anyway ????

Stupid and I mean STUPID stuff can come out of an argument about line butting or parking spaces.

The employees probably only make minimum wage anyway.

    Happy New Year.

    Just slow down a bit.

I suspect that she meant that she could help another shopper after she finished serving you. I am never bashful about telling a manager my concerns, they usually appreciate the input.

My next comment would of been to ask who the manager on duty was? I tend to make a powerpoint slide out of every bad customer experience I have and then I show it to CEO's as part of my customer centric marketing presentation, plus use them in my presentations at marketing tradeshows, etc. More than one CMO has sought me out to discuss further the example I used from their retail operations.

I think I would have let the situation play out just a little bit longer, just to see where it was going. Next time you're in a similar situation, just stand there and stare (not glare, mind you). It's amazing what a few moments of awkward silence can bring about.

Take a valium before you go shopping? Not sure why people feel they need to ask the oppinion of the forum over such trivial matters to be honest, its sad to think that adults cant make decisions on their own anymore without the approval of a forum or cant distingush between right and wrong on their own.

And besides what does it matter what we think? You have allready done the ded.

This thread is on the same level of where can I buy black paint?

posting threads like this is kind of on the lines of when your mother effin someone that cut you off and going on and on like they can hear you.

you just want to express your feelings to " someone" over your aggravations of the day.

Don't think he really wanted your "approval" or to answer per sey literally.

we all can't pick up the phone to rant, some come to where they consider are friends.

You're an idiot. The thread that so many lame jokes have been made about exists in the car audio section under the custom fab section. Snow already linked it. The comments have nothing to do with the thread I made about house paint.

I don't know . . . I'm a pretty assertive guy, sometimes boarding on aggressive, but I've found life is too short to get my gonads twisted over who's next in line. Usually when that happens the rude people rush to the new open aisle and I just keep my place in line and smile. If I was really, really in a hurry I would speak up and make sure that I got my "proper" place in line but that is a real rarity.
