Mark is right....in ten years, digital will be de rigeur and we will either have to go along or be content with what little of our chosen format we can get our hands on. I'll go along and enjoy it but, for me, it changes the experience for me which doesn't neccessarily equate to the just sound quality.

I guess the cat's out of the proverbial bag now, thanks man. Now every Polkfest will be just people throwing copies of Catcher in the Rye at me laughing and pointing.

    I'll show them.....oh how I'll show them.

hey there are always the pictures bro. besides been doing that pointing and laughing thing for years already.....why you think we want you there so badly???

Someday I will likely own a server thingy, unless I am squashed under some large weighted thing or simply implode to a grease spot.

All this talk of our beloved sonic media dying is kind of depressing! I LOVED tapes in the 80s and 90s and even today. I bought a CD player in the late 80s that I still use. The SQ was so much better than tape but CD was not as "warm" IMO. I have a MP3 player that I have downloaded to it the least lossy bit rate. I still hear distortion with it.
What I find interesting is how big vinyl is. And also the reserection of RTR! Is this for nostalgic reasons? All formats have a unique sound so I don't want to hear "Dude! Vinyl is SOOO much better"! My point to all of this is that, with the exception of 8 track and Beta, most formats will stay with us. As long as there is interest in them.
Things are more like they are now than they ever will be!

Troy - Don't get me wrong liners, copy, intimate recording notes and written lyrics are cool and will be missed as far as a tangible connection to the band or artist. I'm just self aware enough that over the years that becomes less and less and eventually will disappear with the coming, rather already here digital revolution. Artists used to ALWAYS include the lyrics to every song. The first thing I used to do, and I'm sure you did as well, was read what I just bought, even before listening or while half listening. There are a few bands that are including liners with the digital download....the Yeah Yeah Yeah's pop into my head but the depth of them is gone and will never be back. It's just a reality.

Ted - True dat. I hope to eventually spontaneously combust and be in a magazine with my untouched foot wearing a tennis shoe. We all can dream.

Well Mark, you can add me to the A/B. You can blindfold me 10 times, **** slap my you know what, get me drunk, make me stay up for 50 hours and make me sit on sharp nails sticking straight up stark nekked and you know what?

I won't fold and neither will F1nut.

That sounds like too much naked fun and group weirdness to raise my glass to that....but I have it laid out for you two guys already. The sheets are already printed and we may tweak the demo closer to the event but you guys are done. You'll hear things you never thought possible and end up eating crow.

Why you don't think it's possible is the lol to me. Especially you Treitz since you're gear experience is bigger than F1Nut.

Either way it will be fun and a friendly boxing match. We should start taking offline bets on this event.

F1 and I have plenty of experience, that's for sure. As to has more? Eh, I'll have to give that to F1. Hell, he's been around for hundreds of years before me.

On another note...while I may think in the back of my mind that it IS possible, from what we have heard, it is not. Why? Our ears tell us so. They do not lie. Now, Mark, Mark, Mark......we are done? In the words of F1 himself?

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

I have to admit I'm just tiptoeing into digital storage, but don't understand something.

If you play a CD/SACD from your player through a DAC, or rip that CD/SACD to a hard drive and then play it back through that same DAC, it would sound identical; Correct??

So is enhanced sound that people are talking about due to new downloadable digital formats with resolutions higher than what is available on CD/SACD ??

F1Nut - Please. You only left because it was either too loud, which drove most of us out of the room or when you asked what was playing, it was mentioned that it wasn't a CD. You didn't give anything time enough to judge anything. I can't wait to AB you at Polkfest 2012 in front of your peers old man....better bring your game face.

That's not how I recall it.

2012? Why are we waiting so long?

I'm just picking a date since the 2012 HQ Polkfest will be a huge deal. Its easy but if you wanna do it sooner, let me know and we'll have a mini-fest at your house. I'm not ready for 2CH demos since I'm setting up for the LSiM host stuff.

I'd love to show you how good things can sound when they aren't on a tangible medium.

You set the date and let's get our local friends involved....I'll bring the wings. I'm sure MLS, Vette, Granby, etc would be there for sure. No one out of state is invited, lol. Maryland folks only....although Warlocks, Nadams and other PA folks would be cool. It's about time you host something anyways.

As far as listening goes....for me, I do two types of listening. Well, three.....One is when I'm doing stuff around the house and the music is on for basically ambient noise. Two, when I'm in the stereo room but I'm reading or what have you. Three is when I'm REALLY listening....lights off, no distractions. I do a LOT more of scenaio 1 and 2. Far too little of #3. As such, the digital server is actually perfect....and as the majority of music for most people falls into categories 1 and 2....it makes sense.

I also think that eventually, the quality will follow if it's not already there. I don't know so I'm not going to comment.

I doubt that shindig would be worth your travel time Tom....and Yankees dislike ppl from TN.....even if you're actually ok. If you wanted to come up for it, and it was convenient, you're more than welcome to get free lodging here or at Jesse's I'm sure. The offer is open.

I ll be there. Toms ears can actually twitch independantly of each of other, quite a trick, possibly useful for things other than audio as well.

I can just see his road dog hawking the tent for him....see the man with.....and the ladies smiling.

The kid showed his stuff as well at the Fest and he can get us all cokes and stuff....

Sorry I haven't been back here in a while. Choosing between aiff & flac is just a matter of what you are able to store & decode. Flac is a lossless format that sounds WAAAAAAY better than standard ITunes downloads. Maybe that's really why some of you feel disconnected from your IPod music. Storing flac(Free Lossless Aidio Codec) requires half the space of the original CD, so it is not as efficient as MP3 or WMA, but the sound quality is identical to the original CD. I don't have the ability to rip SACDs, so I just do my CDs.
I don't know much about the aiff format, as it is mainly used by MACs, but I believe it is a lossless format also.
I have a WD TV media server. It cost me a whopping 89.99 on sale! I rip all my music to it. But it is not just a music server, I also rip my family photos, home movies, & DVDs. It is a true Media server. It has no storage, but you can add 2 external HDs & swap them as needed for almost limitless music, movies etc... It can also contain embedded metadata in each music track to display the album art, so you don't lose out on that. You just have to keep your TV on:mad:

In topics like this, people always seem to rag on DRM. I've never been affected by DRM because there is always a cracker who has figured it out and will willingly distribute his method for free.

I've never noticed any method of copyright protection on anything simply because of this reason. The crackers will always keep up... no worries.

i love the fact i can record my vinyl and the sound quality rivals my sacd's and my dvd audio discs.96khz/24 bit recording with audacity.so with vinyl i get good digital and great analogue.
