Really surprised no body's mentioned Emmylous Harris. Though I'm not particularly well versed in female vocalists, gotta say she has one of the loveliest voices out there. Start with her recordings with Gram Parsons:

She only made one and a fraction albums, but Sinead Lohan (not that other Sinead, nor that other Lohan!) is/was terrific.

    Covering Dylan's To Ramona:

Joan Baez (another nontrivial female vocalist!) did a good cover of Lohan's No Mermaid and a very good cover of her Who Do You Think I Am? on her album Gone From Danger.

Here's another cover of Who Do You Think I Am?; yez takes what yez can gets...

I just stumbled across Little Dragon from Sweden. There most recent album has a couple of cuts that really display Yukimi Nagano's vocals.

The video ain't the greatest, but you get the point.

Here is another to check out. I was watching Tori Amos on public TV. After that show, Sun Studio Sessions was on with a young female singer / song write named Vienna Teng. What a wonderful voice. The music is simple and to the heart.

How could I forget, Karen Dalton. Very idiosyncratic vocalist, but god damn could she sing the blues. Used to sing in the same Greenwich Village folk clubs with Fred Neil and Bobby Dylan.

None of you newbies here probably remember Jo Stafford, but she had a great voice in her day. Jo had a perfect pitch voice and sang with The Pied Pipers before striking out on her own. She might be heard on the game "Fallout New Vegas" with The Pied Pipers backing up Frank Sinatra on Blue Moon? I think they also sang the song "Dream" on the game Bioshock 2.

Correction, The Pied Pipers aren't with Frank on Fallout's Blue Moon, although Jo does a very nice version of it.
