Hey, you know, the replacement laser on that 2900 is pretty cheap and easy to swap out. Let me know if that is something you want to try. Just need a screw driver, a soldering iron, and some solder wick.

Also, way to go finding that coupon! Really a steal for under $100.

Tell me more. When I first started having problems, I researched this a bit & was under the impression the replacement part was $100+. If that's not the case, I'm game to give it a try. I've got the soldering/desoldering tools.

    Thanks.

Bill, I understand what you are saying about 2 channel audio board.

As for strictly 2 channel unit in pure direct mode, it shuts off everything including the multi-channel audio for the audio. You have a dedicated 2 channel audio outputs in the rear of the unit which is probably a separate pathway for signal even though it's on the same board. I guess it's probably serve the same purpose as having a separate 2 channel audio board and multi-channel audio board.

You might want to consider that in most designs, features like pure direct, etc., just mute or turn off the output sections (not the entire circuit) and kill the front display. Most of the time, it is physically/electrically impossible to completely 'turn off' the entire circuit, especially the 'chips' like DSPs, DACs, etc.

In fact, in this particular Pioneer, it is impossible to turn off the video MPEG Decoder chip because the CD PCM audio stream comes out from it. The direct mode does bypass the audio DSP and feeds directly to the R/L DAC. Based on the block diagram and schematics, I pretty sure the other channels are still running, but they are just not receiving any feed signal and the output is muted.

I am not sure how the Pure Direct is designed for this particular unit. But I remember I tried pure direct mode with TV for setting this up, and it shuts off HDMI and all other audio channels. I am not sure it also shuts off multi channel video outputs or not.

But as you have said, multi-channel audio might have been muted or bypassed in pure direct mode but I don't know. But If it's muted by the DSP for multi channels, there is no signal feeding to the analog session of the multi-channel audio. So, signal does not present at these DAC session. It's what I meant as shutting down too. I think it's not possible to shut down power supply to those boards unless there is more advanced power circuits involved and controlled by the logic processor or something.

I have downloaded the service manual once but it's 80-100 pages long so I gave up reading it.

I found a coupon code for MCM Electronics, AFC909, & ended up getting the player for less than $100 including shipping. Nice deal!

    -Dave

I just checked this out and it came to $98 shipped when I looked it up with the code. However, they do not take paypal as far as I can tell if that effects your payment options.

I ordered the Pioneer player last night for my father-in-law from 6ave.com via paypal and everything went through. Today I got an email from them saying my order had been canceled because my shipping address (work) was not confirmed in my account because it is different than my billing address (home); although my account is confirmed. I then asked about paying for the player a different way even though the paypal things is BS, but they had already sold out including the unit I had purchased. My next question to them was when were they going to refund my money since they canceled my order, and was told 3-5 business days...

Has anyone had a similar experience?

May be I am safe but I keep my fingers crossed from now. I might have placed an order earlier than you.

$150 shipped is quite a deal on this player.

I haven't received anything other than a confirmation of my order. If this deal falls through for me, I'm getting the Sherwood universal player.

I'd call 6ave and ask the status. You never know when that Sherwood is going to sell out also!

A little behind the scene. I've compared it with Rotel RCD-1072 and Emotiva ERC-1 during our demo group. ERC-1 was not mine to keep but I don't want to keep it either.

I've compared all of them for the regular redbook CD, and the HDCD. And I've turned off upsampling in the DV-79Avi if you wonder. But it sounds better with the upsampling turned on in the Pio.

    Guess which one I keep?

I also received email that mine is shipped today as well.

Too bad I only ordered one unit. If I ordered 2 or more, I could have sell one back at cost for you guys.

But wait, I may just do that for this unit if I change my mind. :D

Not likely since it is discontinued. You normally don't see Pio Elite for sale online anyway, so this was a rare sale event.

Got mine today. After spending a couple of hours listening to it, I can say It completely blows the sherwood out of the water.
Sacd and Dvd-A sound alot better on the Elite than on the original Oppo BP-83.
I would say it sounds as good as my Denon DVD-3930CI.
