ILink is the Sony method of carrying SACD digital over a Firewire interface. I know Denon had a similar method, and maybe Pioneer licensed ILink from Sony.
I use my Sony DA7100ES as a pre/pro, and while I now have an Oppo BD83 for BR/DVDs, I still use my Sony NS9100ES DVD/SACD player for multi-channel SACD, and it connects to the 7100ES via ILink.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes
Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables
Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
Three 20 amp circuits. -
OP, thanks for the buzz!
I have Pioneer DV79Avi in silver. I used it for 2 channel SACD listening and regular redbook CD in my bedroom rig. It's a stellar unit to say the least.
I got one at $150 from 6th Ave today. I paid a lot more for the silver one but I don't mind another one at this price.
Folks, get it while it lasts and you won't be regretted.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -

Does anyone know how this would compare to the denon 3910?

I bought mine 2 years ago for $400 used and it was a great deal then. This price is insane for a very good quality universal. I was very pleased with the SACD playback quality as well as DVD-Audio which is what I bought it for. Gorgeous looking and great sounding. Only thing I can pick at is the fact that to set it up properly and to get to all the functions you must use an on screen display. Navigation from the front panel is not easy. I just run a video jack to the tv. One more thing of note is it does have HDMI optical and analog outs. It does a pretty good job of upconverting dvd's to 1080 as well.SDA-1C (full mods)

I'll just put that $150 toward the new Oppo-93 that's coming out soon. -

Does anyone know how this would compare to the denon 3910?
While I have not heard the 79avi, I have had the 3910 in my stable and at a glance, I would say the 3910 is superior in a couple ways. First, the 3910 has a better video processor (the SI Realta), so if you were actually using it for DVD, it would better. The DACs inside are pretty similar (PCM1738 vs PCM1796), but the 3910 includes HDCD decoding and the Denon has a dedicated audio board for the 2-ch output. Without seeing a schematic for the Pioneer, I can't say whether the analog output section is better/worse in the Pioneer. I can say the Denon does sound quite nice though and I would expect the Pioneer to sound nice as well.
BTW, 6ave is saying it is unavailable again. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Currently Not Available
Thank God! My wife would kill me if I bought something else this month!..... ><////(*> -
Thanks for the links Danny! I was a little late to the party on the Pioneer, but I ended up ordering the Sherwood. It will replace my Denon 2900 which has become stubborn on reading Redbook CD. I found a coupon code for MCM Electronics, AFC909, & ended up getting the player for less than $100 including shipping. Nice deal!

Hey, you know, the replacement laser on that 2900 is pretty cheap and easy to swap out. Let me know if that is something you want to try. Just need a screw driver, a soldering iron, and some solder wick.
Also, way to go finding that coupon! Really a steal for under $100.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Does anyone know how this would compare to the denon 3910?
I wouldn't give up my 3910 for anything except maybe a 3930 or 5910 for the right price.
for 150.00 you can't go wrong Pioneer Elite is good stuff, but if you have a 3910 it's going to take a awful good player to beat that.:D -

Shoot, I was mistaken here. I was thinking about the 3930ci that I had for a while, not the 3910. I have not had any direct experience with the 3910, so my info above is probably wrong. The 3910 does not use the Realta and I know nothing about the internal layout (2-ch board, etc). Heck, does the 3910 even do HDCD?
EDIT: Found some gut shots of the 3910 to refresh my memory. One thing stands out. The 3910 does not have a dedicated linear power supply for the audio section like the Pioneer does. It uses the same crappy switching supply for the whole player. That's a knock right there which they improved vastly in the 3930. It also does not have a dedicated audio board for the 2-ch (like the 3930), so the Elite and the Denon are the same in that respect.
Overall, if I were comparing the two now, I'd probably give the nod to the Elite. The elite is also more mod friendly due to its use of through hole opamps (instead of surface mount). For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Well, I dig around and found some old pics I took from my DV79Avi-S. It seems to have a separate audio board with I am thinking DAC underside?
It has neat circuit layout for separate audio video and power supply sessions.
If you use it in Pure Direct mode, all digital path including video path and digital path such as HDMI or iLink are automatically switches off. It's a pretty slick unit for 2 channel analog rig if you like Pioneer sound which is not too warm or cold.
I have heard Denon but not the 3910 model. I think most Denon players are on a warm side with a sharper tone. Pioneer is not as warm but with softer tone. So, pick your poison.
But I paid a lot more for DV79Avi-S before so it's no brainer at $150.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -

Separate audio board is very common. I was trying to differentiate the Denon earlier (but I was mistaking the 3930 with the 3910) by the fact that it had a completely separate 2-ch audio board (in addition to the multichannel audio board). For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Bill, I understand what you are saying about 2 channel audio board.
As for strictly 2 channel unit in pure direct mode, it shuts off everything including the multi-channel audio for the audio. You have a dedicated 2 channel audio outputs in the rear of the unit which is probably a separate pathway for signal even though it's on the same board. I guess it's probably serve the same purpose as having a separate 2 channel audio board and multi-channel audio board.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. No problem. I was on the verge of getting the Sherwood when the Pioneer Elite came along. I don't think you can go wrong with this. -
You guys got me all excited now. Glad I have one coming..
