I talked to Chad as well...dual Legends are a great option for outstanding bass in smaller rooms, but the Empire is still the better deal. If you split them for a more even room response, you won't get the output of a single Empire. You have to colocate them. They are a perfect fit for those looking for a smaller sub in a smaller room, that wants deep and clean bass for music and movies. As Lee said above, they'll match the output of a SVS PB12NSD above 30hz, probably exceed (at least the last rev), but won't be as loud down to 18hz or below (even with room gain). That's fine. I've heard the Empire and it's impressive...very clean and will make your walls sweat.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

How would you compare the Empire, to your Ultra? Just curious to know if they are in the same league are not.

It's room dependent, but I was quite impressed with the Empire in the short time I listened to it. Musically, which is pretty much 40hz and above it's a toss up. For HT in a room similar to mine, the Empire is very loud and clean. The Ultra has advantages below 30hz. big advantages, but for me, I have to scrub off about 10db of room gain to be flat below that point. I wouldn't have to with an Empire. Below 20hz, the Ultra has a huge advantage, but again, that's feel, not hear bass. If you seal the Ultra it will have more output at 20hz, but probably less in the 50hz region. Subjectively, in a smaller room, the Empire within it's limits, it would be hard to pick one as a favorite. Driven a little louder, I think the Ultra would win out overall. That said, the Empire is a huge value at it's price.

The legends are here. Will post my first impressions later. They are very light, no where near the 80lbs it suggest on the epik site. Tracking said 66lbs.

Well have been playing with them for the last hr and will say that they might go back and I will try to spring for dual empires. I still have some more tweaking to do and setup but from my little time listening, these subs struggle to reproduce certain notes in songs where the mfw did it effortless. Just my initial impressions so it may change once I finish tweaking and run rew.

You would think with dual 12s in each enclosure, it would be able to
handle the Low notes:( Maybe try to find a used SVS Ultra-13.

Remember they are $499 subs with 300 watts. Hard to beleive at that price point they would satisfy all your needs.

They are definitely going back. I guess I just wasted money on shipping. I would compare this sub to the martin logan dynamo which I have owned also and the dynamo which is a 10" sub, was just as good if not better. I have flanked them, stacked them, place them everywhere I could in this room and they just dont do it for me. But with any piece of gear, you need to spend a little time with it and see what happens. I will give myself a week with them and if nothing changes, they will be returned. I have listened to only music with them as of now and quite frankly I am really scared to even think about trying a movie with great LFE in it.

Yeah, and my gut said get the empires initially, but my wallet said get the legends. I have heard the svs pb-nsd10, which is a 499 sub and two of them would kill in my room and the mfws' were the same price as the epiks. I guess my expectations were high. Maybe I will try the empires or go to something like rhythmik, hsu, or svs. With my mfw's being already sold and just awaiting pickup, I hate to bag out of that deal and keep them.

I was thinking epik legends/empires also but just can't get past the cheap drivers. In the past he's always offered huge quality drivers and the new ones in the new line just doesn't do it for me.

    Try playing with the phase.

I am playing with everything now and my wife even says why not keep the mfws'. I will probably play with them all weekend and then call monday and get this return process rolling. Will be looking at other subs now or keeping the mfws. I was hoping to get the same price/performace ratio as I got out of the mfws and its just not there. People can say what they want about av123 and the issues of the company as well as the sub, but a working mfw( which mine have performed flawlessly for over a year) does not have anything that comes close to it. I have heard the svs pb12 plus and the same guy that owns it wants an mfw and its set to buy mines.

Hmmm..I have dual Epic Sentinels (For sale btw) and I was looking at the Empires. I knew that the Legends were entry level anyways so it is not surprising there might be some initial disappointments.

Well, I will say my legends have woke up. I put a playlist on at a moderate level and left out the room and did some things around the house. Came back, played with the phase a little and had a sit down and listened and will say they sound much better than this morning. I am hearing that midbass punch I was expecting from the 12inch woofer. They are starting to dig a little deeper. I know alot of speakers have a break in period but I have never heard a speaker that sounded so terrible 2 hrs ago actually put a smile on my face now. Still tweeking and as I said, those were my initial impressions this morning. But with any piece of gear you have to give it time. I guess time to try a blu with great lfe. I have been in this hobby a while and I am still learning, I guess this was just another learning process.

They need room gain or EQ'ng. I have quad Empires and my room hs eal crummy room gain. They really didn't come alive until I EQ'd them and set a good house curve to taste. Probably the SMS-1 would be a good bet. I use one with the Anti Mode to get what I wanted from the Empires.

Good to hear an early user's review on the Legends. From the specs, they have thinner cabinet material than the Empire's. Hopefully these subs will improve enough with further breaking-in to make them keepers. Keep us posted, especially your review after viewing movies with reference LFE.

The finishing of these subs is not that great IMO. I thought of getting Dual Epic Legends but got myself Paradimg Sub 25 and it is great.

You do realize they cost $499. They're not going to have a $150 black piano finish paint job or some exotic wood.;)

I will say day 2 is much much better and the likely hood of me keeping them has grown alot. I would not mind getting the empires but the legends stacked and corner loaded in my system has definitely impressed me. With music the bass is articulate, tight, very defined. They are hitting their stride right now and are really starting to impress me. I put on Iron Man 2 this morning and watch the fly by scene, and it will say they handle that scene much better than the mfws. It was very clean, deep, and they didnt bottom out. They have good slam when asked for it. The mid bass slam you would expect from 12's is really coming out. They can pressurize a room quite well. I will be looking for a sub eq to tweek them more. I am still toying with the idea of getting the 15's or just getting another stack of the 12's to flank on the other side. I do think they are meant for pairs and not a single. They sound good flanked but did not have the slam in my room that I wanted.

Danz you are correct. My logans sounded bad when I first hooked them up and two hours later they sounded like a different speaker. Same can be said for these subs. They are hitting their stride on day 2 and can't wait til the open up some more. Would love to hear the empires now. Only time will tell what I will do.

Ok my final verdict is this sub is a must have. I would hate to hear the empires as the subs fill me room with incredible, clean, tight thunderous bass with east. I will be ordering another set of duals to flank on the other side hear soon just cause I am a bass head. I probably should have gotten the empires at first and I don't really need the other stack but I like visual balance with my rig so another stack is needed.

Musically- I have not heard a sub that can reproduce such clean deep powerful bass at this pricepoint. I have owned a martin logan dynamo and I will say this sub kills it in every phase. I have listened to concert blus, lossless audio, and cds and it performs with ease.

Hometheater- I thought they would compromise output for sq and man was I wrong. I have never heard bass like this. I have watched Iron Man 2, The Hulk, Rambo 4, Transformers 2, and this sub has not bottomed out. I have made my mfws bottom out before but this sub take any scene with clean thunderous bass. I even cut one sub off and just played one and it filled my room with ease. Awesome sub.

In closing, I apologize to Epik for judging there product so soon. I think there needs to be a manual put in with the sub saying this sub needs burn in to achieve maximum performance. Out of the box this sub sounds terrible. 36 hrs later this might be the best 1000 I have spent on my system thus far. Bsoko said it best earlier in this thread, these subs put out clean bass. My friend who bought my mfw and he also owns a svs pb12plus said that stack kills his plus in sq and just about matches the output for 400 less. I am happy and suggest that someone who is looking into new subs should check out these or the empires as Chad at Epik has outdone himself.
