but we need to keep all sports honest and fair for all.

All the kids, on both teams, had to agree to allow this to happen. They had to agree to work together (teamwork) to give a gift to someone who they believed was worthy.

The score didn't change the outcome of the game, it didn't cause one team to lose when they could have won. All it did was give 1 kid the thrill of a lifetime, and give all the other kids a sense of what it feels like to really help someone selflessly.

Congratulations on being the first person on my ignore list.

So if you disagree with something, that is trolling?

Learning to be competitive is a very good thing and is an important lesson from sports.
We need that in our society, instead of a sense of entitlement.

While I generally agree with you when you are talking about kids that don't have special needs competing, this is a special circumstance. It's obvious they have allowed him to play despite his handicap, out of good nature.

I wish the media would handle these stories differently. Many Downs Syndrome kids are extremely smart. They should have just made the story about him scoring the touchdown, and not hit on the obvious fact that they let him have it.

We lived next door to a kid with Downs (Danny), and he was incredibly intelligent, he just had diffculty communicating. That kid used to whop my **** playing HORSE, which given my lack of proficiency at basketball isn't hard to do---but I played as best I could, he was a heck of a shot!

    Good stuff nonetheless though, BRAVO!

It was a true touching moment but there is a big difference between the two.

...and IT IS those very differences that you are missing.

One may actually have a chance to participate at a higher level in the sport, the other has little to no chance of ever competing at a higher level. Both teams were happy, the crowd was happy, the coaches were happy, the kid was happy. I'm failing to see a "down" side.

When you were wrestling with your kids in the livingroom when they were 3yrs old, did you make sure to get the "pin?" Come on man, surely you see the difference here?

Yes and they shouldn't be played by do gooders.
This will likely happen again and again and actually does more harm than good when the real world catches up.

Others who call me names simply don't really read what I say and think about it.
That is their loss. I know I'm right and that's all I need.

Then let the thing be and stop arguing with everyone. You are only trying to convience yourself that you are right because no one else thinks the same in the thread. The constant arguing ect is why you are called a troll.

You also came into a thread, and posted something that YOU KNOW is going to get a reaction, and cause attention to be brought to yourself, IE being a troll and doing so in order to cause a stir that YOU KNOW WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.

If you disagree simply post something along the lines of, while it was nice what they did I don't agree with the idea of allowing a child with a handicap at such to play because of the chance he could get hurt ect. Wow what would be so hard about that, but no, you come in and once again take on teh world and then play the whole part of ohhh dont' yell at me its my opinion even though I'm going to piss off a lot of people and get called names (knowing full well what I said would do this).

This is why you are called a troll.

And what is this childs "real world" to be put into a classroom knowing that he is different and not being able to be with other kids or do other things his brother's did ect. Why should someone because they have a handicap be treated differently? You don't think they would notice that because they are different they can't do everything everyone else wants to? How is that fair, how is that being respectful to anyone? Oh wait its the real world. Are they just supposed to be told, well its just something you can't do, so tough deal with it? The school gave the kid a chance he probably wouldn't get anywhere else. They were losing hardcore, and it helped give the kid something to be proud of because he went to all the practices, he worked his butt off. Oh wait real world, he's not supposed to get any reward in your mind because in the real world even if you work your butt of you still don't get anythign because its who you know not what you know...

Your comparison of HS sports being like the real world is full of crap. I went to a high school that was very good D1 school and several people I know were on the state teams and won ect. What real world skill did they find out? that even though they are winners on the court they get to now work at McDonalds or better yet unemployed because they never studied anythign, just played something because they were told to.

Get off your high horse, stop trolling and making comments YOU DARN WELL KNOW are going to get a reaction.

Grow up, or better yet go into the real world. the whole I'm right when everyone else is wrong is not going to take you very far, sorry, but you would knwo this because you're such a great advise giver.

Wow, you just don't get the idea at all. It wasn't just about Ike, it was about camaraderie, teamwork, and overall just being a good person by all the other kids on both teams.

How is that a bad thing? Really tell me how can competing teams that come together to do something beautiful for there fellow man be bad?

Yes I have read what you wrote and your past doesn't relate at all to this. This was one time. What you are talking about sounds like it happened over and over again. I mean really, get over yourself. The world does not revolve around your life.

One more question, What is so bad about being a Do Gooder? Aren't Cops, Firemen, and Emergency Medical Tech's Do Gooders? I would rather be a Do Gooder than a Hater.

    Ugh.

All this talk of "fair" and "equality" in sports.

Has it slipped from notice that this kid, obviously disabled mentally and not as physically capable as other students his age, is playing on a football team with kids who lack these disabilities. Yet here we are listening to this "genius" preach to us about "fairness" and "equality"? Yeah, sorry, but in this instance, that doesn't exist just by the circumstances alone.

You're more screwed up than a football bat.

I really find it amusing when people will sit there and imply that sports teaches valuable lessons and so on and so forth and then, in the same conversation, make the statement: "You play sports to win. That's the American way." Man, talk about missing the mark!

What blows my mind is that x is still defending his stance when it's obviously wrong. In the game of life, at this moment, he is losing. Kindness and compassion toward one less fortunate is not just the Christian way, it's the human way.

So letting a kid who has dreamed all his life of playing "real" football but knows somewhere in his mind that it will never happen have his "fake" moment of glory is wrong? And even if he doesn't know it's fake does it make his feeling of jubilation and that of all the other kids and parents and fans and everyone on this forum wrong? No. It makes you wrong for wanting to deprive him of it. Unbelievable.

There was a similar situation in the Dallas area a couple of years ago. I can't remember the exact details, but I think the kids coach approached the opposing coach about letting the kid get one carry in the game. The opposing coach did one better and said that they would let him score a touchdown. They agreed that this kid would get one carry to start the 2nd half. As it turned out, they got the ball on the one yard line so the kid got to go 99yds for the touchdown.

They did a follow up about a month ago and his parents said that it's still the high point in his life and that people in the community still ask him about it.

Great stories about putting people ahead of a game.

I was going to comment on x-man's stance, but I read obieone's signature and changed my mind.

Hmmm . . . If one is intelligent, one can argue either side of a point.

Let's see, if they made everyone equal, at LEAST 11 players on each team would have scored, but . . . the score was a 35-6 loss for Ditzenberger's (the young man with Down Syndrome) team. Equal?

Let the kid see his America, he may not get to see all of it.

    America, Why I Love Her

Lyrics by John Mitchum Recited by John Wayne

You ask me why I love her? Well, give me time, and I’ll explain…
Have you seen a Kansas sunset or an Arizona rain?
Have you drifted on a bayou down Louisiana way?
Have you watched the cold fog drifting over San Francisco Bay?

Have you heard a Bobwhite calling in the Carolina pines?
Or heard the bellow of a diesel in the Appalachia mines?
Does the call of Niagara thrill you when you hear her waters roar?
Do you look with awe and wonder at a Massachusetts shore…
Where men who braved a hard new world, first stepped on Plymouth Rock?
And do you think of them when you stroll along a New York City dock?

Have you seen a snowflake drifting in the Rockies…way up high?
Have you seen the sun come blazing down from a bright Nevada sky?
Do you hail to the Columbia as she rushes to the sea…
Or bow your head at Gettysburg…in our struggle to be free?

Have you seen the mighty Tetons? …Have you watched an eagle soar?
Have you seen the Mississippi roll along Missouri’s shore?
Have you felt a chill at Michigan, when on a winters day,
Her waters rage along the shore in a thunderous display?
Does the word “Aloha”… make you warm?
Do you stare in disbelief When you see the surf come roaring in at Waimea reef?

From Alaska’s gold to the Everglades…from the Rio Grande to Maine…
My heart cries out… my pulse runs fast at the might of her domain.
You ask me why I love her?… I’ve a million reasons why.
My beautiful America… beneath Gods’ wide, wide sky.

Sorry X, your way off base on this one.
Nobody is saying give the kid a pass for his whole life here. These kids have enough to overcome, bad times far outweigh the good times,so giving this kid some good times is by far the least these kids can do. It also teaches tolerance and compasion, that is in dire need in todays society. Kudo's to everyone involved with it to make it happen.
