Tried the Ayinger Oktoberfest tonight. Very very good. Better than Sam Adams. I like it because it's not too sweet. It has a sweetness to it, but it doesn't linger too long. Great flavor as well. If you see it buy it.

Agreed! Talking about these great, full-bodied cold-weather beers is as much fun as talking about our Polks!

Someone mentioned it above and my wife and I have a goal to be in Germany for Oktoberfest at some point in the future.

My dad was in a tank battalion stationed in Germany shortly after the war in 1948 when he was 18 or 19 yrs. old, and my father-in-law was stationed there briefly during the Vietnam era when he was in his early forties. They both tell tall tales about how much fun Oktoberfest is there.

    OK.

Time to come out of closet...

    I HATE OCTOBERFEST STYLE BEERS!!!!

    That's right; I said it.

OK, maybe I don't hate them; I mean, I love all beer. I have a pretty well-formed pallet for ultra-bitter IPA's and the like, but I could enjoy the hell out of a warm natty light on a hot summer day at 9AM.:biggrin:

Anyway, I was thinking about it, and these are the styles of beer that I like more than Octoberfest style beers (not in any order):

    -IPA
    -Pale Ale
    -Pilsner
    -Stout
    -Porter
    -Belgian Ale
    -Brown Ale
    -Bock
    -sh*tty domestic "pilsners"

Here's a list of the styles of beers I like less than Octoberfest style beers:

    -Heffeweizen
    -Barley Wine

So as you can see, I don't much care for Octoberfest style beers; however, I do very much care for Octoberfest itself as an event, a season, and an overall way of life.

I do change my beer preference as the temps outside get cooler. I go for Brown Ales, Porters, and Stouts more than normal in the Winter, but a super bitter, super hoppy IPA is great for me any time of year!

I am sippin' a Flying Dog "Snake Dog" IPA as we type. mm mm mm. Beer and Steely Dan... did I mention I have a long weekend which starts now???:cool:

We must have a similar palate Falconcry72. I agree with the beers you like and dislike more than Oktoberfests. However, I still ike Oktoberfests and (obviously) purchase and drink them. I just don't drink them as much as some other beers.

Yes this is the best time of the year for Beer Lovers IMO. Especially German Brews.
Spaten Oktoberfest is one of my personal Favorites along with Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr Original oktoberfest is probably my favorite .
Now that winter is coming , Dark beers are in effect.
Warsteiner Dunkel is the one my friends.

Oktoberfests are a great celebration of the season!

Granted, after a bit, they can be a bit of 'sameness' to the flavor - an emphasis on the malts leading to sweetness.

Some of the brewers have done a nice job of balancing seasonal flavors to bite - especially if you can get them fresh.

Sam Adams, Becks, and Spaten offer some nicely consistent and balanced Oktoberfests that really do offer some nice celebrations of "Oktober" - look for them on draft!
