I just love this time of year....the Oktoberfest brews are hopin'...:D

We have a local brewery in SD - Karl Strauss - which comes out with a nice seasonal brew.

I also like Spaten's Oktoberfest, too.

What are your favorites?

Historically Spaten's good but not my favorite, but this year's version is outstanding. If I had to pick one beer for the rest of my life it would be a strong contender.

Paulaner is pretty good, as is Hacker Pschorr. The Augustiner I had was disappointing considering it's price and reputation.

Pauliner and Haufbrau for true octoberfest. New Belgium Hoptober for fall seasonal.

Oktoberfest tops my list of favorite beers!

The nice thing about the Sam Adams version is that it is available in so many places....
I too love the Brooklyn, Pauleener - heck - all of them and am always willing to try a new one.

I was a little dissapointed with Sierra Nevada's octoberfest this year. They are pretty good all around with their seasonal beers usually. Not as full bodied as I would have liked. Guess I just will have to keep drinking!

We thought Tumbler was good, but not a true octoberfest. Still tasty!

To be fair its really a nut brown ale and not an octoberfest, so it belongs with the newcastles of the world.

Beck's has been very good in the past. Haven't tried it this year yet. Spaten's is good and Sam Adams too. Lowenbrau's is good too.

Been sipping and chillin' today - got the day off.

Just some personal observations on the Oktoberfest brews.

Tried the Becks, Spaten, and the local Karl Strauss.

All have that dark honey color to them as you pour them.

All have that Oktoberfest tight bubble w/ sweet malt flavor...mmmm

The Becks does seem a bit 'pinched' at the end - a bit abrupt on the finish.

The Spaten is long and smooth.

The Karl Strauss has a very nice toasty oat background flavor going on - of the three I like this best so far!

Erik the next time you go to BevMo pick up some Lowenbrau. You may like it, it's worth a try.

Any chance of finding the Karl Strauss in Oregon you think? Or are they a small local only brewery?

This time of year when I make my beer runs at BevMo, I pick up several six packs of just Oktoberfest. Next run I'll look for the Lowenbrau Oktoberfest. My BevMo stocks a couple more German selections that I just haven't gotten to yet for this year's Oktoberfest brews....ahhhh....such a burdensome task....:D

Karl Strauss is local only as far as I know.

I have not been into a BevMo in a while (they don't have them in Oregon because of the state liquor laws:(). I checked the BevMo web site and I couldn't find any lowenbrau listed on thir site?!?!? I know for a fact they used to cary both the malt liquor and the Oktoberfest (at this time of year) but they must have stopped carrying it. You must be able to find it somehwere though. It's worth seeking out. Still have not had the Beck's this year. I need to find it and try it out. Let us know if you find the Lowenbrau and also what you think of the Becks.

    Greg

Edit: Also try the Warstiner Oktoberfest at BevMo. It's very good!
