Hope this link works. Why do I care? I admired Lou Reed. There was a lot to admire and a lot to shake your head over. Ahead of his time and brave. Apparently petty and mean too.

Here's this America's got talent show, an entire genre of entertainment I don't care about, but Susan Boyle was going to sing a song there, A Perfect Day. Boyle's the wonderful voice in a grim package that wowed audiences everywhere. I'm not a 'fan' in the true sense of the word but anytime someone wants to sing a song and audiences want her to, then it's time to sing the song. "let there be music to fill the air." (Otis Redding)

Yes, she should have checked with the owner of the copyright to see if everything was OK, on the other hand, how many times does an artist get turned down for a 20 year old song? A Pefect Day wasn't all that good a song, I think it first appeared on the Transformer album. Reed should be happy to grant permission.

Now we get to the crux- look at the two pictures, Reed and Boyle, and tell me who looks like they're in a more grim universe?

Reed looks like Caligula. I guess a lifetime of shooting drugs, sleeping with partners of both sexes and in general conducting yourself with the decorum of Warhol's studio crowd finally caught up to Reed. Being sober can't change that, it appears.

Reed says he's not a fan of Boyle's work. Who Cares, Lou? Man, you just defined bad press.

I won't be rushing out for a new album anytime soon, the one that was supposed to be 'good'.

And yes, Boyle cried all the way to the airport.

Simple fact. Lou Reed is horrible. Please don't defend him. He's horrible. The Velvet Underground is horrible. Horrible.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. I've been a Reed fan for a long time, but lets just say this is an insight into his character that changes much for me. I won't defend him.

defend him? It's why I posted it- to let the real Reed out.

I didn't say you defended him. Trust me... I listen to some pretty "unapproachable" music. Youtube some Deerhoof, Mogwai, or Squarepusher, if you don't believe me.

Fact is.... Lou Reed sucks. Always has. Always will.

Don't tiptoe around the tulips, Zombie Boy- lets hear it.

You mean you don't even like the 'critically acclaimed' Reed? Tell me about the music you listen to- avante guard? Experimental? I'm truly interested. I don't even know who Square pusher is....

All I really know is that when you act this badly for no reason other than petty elitism, you get what's coming to you, and Reed has much coming, apparently.

Geez who cares who he slept with the drugs he did or didnt do? Not sure what that has to do with price of tea.

As far as Susan goes big deal sing another song there is millions to choose from no need to throw a fit over it.

    Just my 2 cents

I've listened to and enjoyed Lou Reed's music since 1973 and don't know much about him beyond the music itself. He does seem like the kind of artist who could care less about selling more CD's/LP's, but he missed an opportunity. A percentage of people upon hearing Boyle's version would have gone out and purchased more of Reed's versions.

Lou Reed just called. I had to talk him off the ledge. He sucks. He knows it. I couldn't convince him otherwise.

    Incidentally... Andy Warhol sucks, too.

Most every cover of anything of Reed's....was better than Reed himself.

"Perfect Day" has already been covered by Duran Duran, Kirsty MacColl, Bono, Indigo, Chris Whitley, John Frusciante and Rolf Harris.

Although i will never understand how a man could possibly not be attracted to girls, god made all of us. I pity men who could never feel the feelings girls have made me feel even before i knew what those feelings were, and yes i realize **** guys dont want or need that opinion from me to validate or understand themselves.

I have smoked my share of pot(and probably a good bit of your share too)so i dont judge the drugs thing either.

What i cannot fathom is how any human being could slither in and out of any situation like the one warhol and that whole tortured group of people not only chose to subject themselves to but CELEBRATED.

yeah I liked walk on the wild side and sweet jane years later, but one look at any documentary or product of that workshop explains what a tortured bunch could turn out someone like lou.

Lou Reed is horrible. Simply... horrible. Duran Duran???? Seriously????

Hunter S Thompson didn't look that bad, Jerry Garcia didn't look that bad, John Lennon didn't look that bad, etc etc.

But Lou Reed looks bad. He has not aged well. This is a tough crowd- rarely agrees about anything. But an inability to form long lasting relationships, indescriminate sexual partners and drug abuse yes, check out the DSM lV, this behavior is used as a diagnostic criteria. Snow wants to assure us these things don't matter-and they do not in the sense they are the individual's choice- but they do reveal a life in turmoil, and I don't have to make value judgements on addiction or sexual orientation to know that is true.

As a recovering person I admired Lou for getting straight. This pettiness with Boyle suggests he has other problems.

I dont get it. Susan isnt entitled to anything from Lou or anyone else if he doesnt want her singing his song big deal. It was a dumb move in a financial sense because there is no doubt that there would be at minimum a resurgance in sales for him temporaily at least if she had sang his song, but she is an adult and needs to grow a thicker skin as far as im concerned, there was no need to walk off and refuse to sing just because she wasnt allowed to sing that song. To be honest they both like asses for different reasons of course.

And I said what I said about your description of Lou because as far as im concerned it isnt relevant to the main point which was his refusal to allow her to sing his song.

That's right- she's not entitled. We got that. We could do a hit on her too, but personally I'm not interested. She cried. We understand she didn't have to cry.

In the time it took to write this, Reed could have waved his hand and let the lady sing. It was no big deal, we all agree, so why did he take the time to say no?

It's his right. And it's the right of persons who are aware of his decision to think him a little petty oaf.

There are A__ Holes in the music world, they're everywhere. And Lou Reed took the time on an unimportant matter to act like one.

I wouldn't call Boyle an A__, but I do agree with you she was emotionally unable to adjust to another song. I imagine her feelings were hurt, and she was stunned- Reed had to specifically say 'no', you understand, to make this not happen, and that's something one normally would only do because you hated the singer or had a serious issue.

She's not a professional- she's been singing all her life-but she's not a hardened performer. I'm sure she has thin skin for other reasons- she's an aging person who is not attractive-the opposite of what the industry promotes. And she cried- is that hard to find sympathy for? I've seen enough of her work to know she often gets behind each song, plans it, and she obviously thought she had something special here.

I'm surprised you feel that way about Boyle, Snow. Shape up or ship out? Part of her charm is that she's just a gal who can sing. Maybe a handicapped gal who can sing.

    Are you cynical?

Lmao :D Now your trying to make me look like a bad guy for not berating Lou for his actions.

As far as im concerned her manager should have gotten Lou's permission for her to sing this song well in advance of her showing up for taping it.

As far as her acting the way she did yes that was unprofessional and if she wants to continue in the music industry she needs to grow up.

What Lou did was IMHO stupid he gained nothing by doing that.

Do I feel bad that she wasnt allowed to sing his song? sure but her acting in this manner gained her nothing too and deprived the world of what would have been a very nice rendition of anything else she would have sang.

In other words they both lost out due to their actions.

You all seem to be saying that he will suffer as a result but..........

How many of you watch that show? How many of you would have known that she sang the song if allowed? How many Americans would rather have a little scandal with a dirty old rock star and a crying ol' biddy than yet another so so talent performance?

    The adage stands true.

    Any publicity is good publicity.

The show's producers are likely pissing themselves with joy, Boyle's back in the rags and Mr. Reed don't need any more money but thrives on attention negative or otherwise. Everyone wins.
