100 mph Ohio crash caught on tape
The force of the crash broke the car into 3 pieces

Updated: Monday, 23 Aug 2010, 5:24 PM EDT
    Published : Monday, 23 Aug 2010, 4:45 PM EDT

SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) - A single car crash on Interstate 675 shut down the southbound lanes in Sugarcreek Twp. for six hours Monday.

Brennan S. Eden, 19, of Mason, Ohio, lost control of his car and slammed into the concrete pillar of a bridge south of Indian Ripple Road about 7:15 a.m.

The force of the crash broke the car into three pieces and Brennan was ejected.

Witnesses said moments before the crash, Brennan was passing other drivers at speeds of at least 100 mph. He crashed when he drove off the left side of the roadway while passing a Sugarcreek Twp. police car. The crash was caught on that officer's cruiser camera.

"He went down into the median, into the grass, hit the guardrail, went airborne and the car hit the center post of the bridge and literally exploded into three main pieces," said witness Mark Riley.

Police said Brennan was alert and conscious after the crash and was flown to Miami Valley Hospital by Careflight where he was last listed in critical condition.

"He is very lucky to still be alive at this point," said Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Marty Fellure. "You can see behind me the impact he took and where he got ejected and landed, he's a very fortunate man right now."

Fellure said they are still investigating the crash trying to determine the driver's speed and why he was passing cars on the berm.

He was quite obviously speeding, he's a dumb **** for sure. Play with fire, get burned. He could have easily crossed over into on coming traffic and killed quite a few people.

Wow! That had to be a fall-asleep incident. I read somewhere that a significant number of drivers who fall asleep tend to push the accelerator down.

Sorry, its at the website I linked to in the news report. Sounds like they don't know what happened.

I highly doubt this was a case of reckless driving. Who speeds past a cop car on the median on purpose unless he was trying to kill himself?

My guess is he was driving like an idiot beyond his skill level, his closing speed on the cop was too fast so he jinked left to try and get around him.

You're probably right. I'm curious now, though. If he was being reckless I still hope he's OK, but what a jag for putting all of those other people at risk. Either way, he ought to be thankful for every day he's alive from here on out.

I was on the freeway last May and a semi-truck tire flew off and killed a guy a few hundred yards in front of me instantly. Could have been anyone.

Hey, could I see that again?

What was the cop doing hanging out in the left lane not passing anyone? Keep right, pass left...

But yeah, obviously the kid was going too fast. What the reasoning is remains to be determined, so I won't say anything about his choices. Could've been seizure, diabetic shock, falling asleep... really anything. Hopefully he recovers to be able to tell his side of the story. Though he likely won't remember any of it regardless of what the cause was.

We can look at the positive. At least there is one less 1985 Pontiac Firebird on the road. Hope he recovers and gets a good car.

    19. I hope the boy lives a semi-normal life.

If it is errant behavior and not sleeping or seizure, at least the world benefits by getting one helluva driver ed. video.

Demi - I drove by an accident in TN where a semi-tire blew up right as a motorcycle was passing it. Not sure on the outcome of the accident, but it looked pretty ugly. Some things there's just no good proactive or defensive way of preventing.

I hope he makes it, and he may have been a good kid, but doing 100mph plus while passing cars on the shoulder indicates something was not quite right there. I don't know the story on this, but hopefully this event will get him back on the right path.

Hopefully they'll find the reason why he was going so fast and reckless. You know, '85 Firebird, 19 yr old shade tree mechanic, stuck throttle cable, panic mode sets in ......... I guess I always look to give the benifit of doubt in a sad situation like this.

That car could've had anywhere from a 2.5 to a 5.0 in it (or more if non-factory). If it was the 5.0, I'm sure it could've toasted the factory brakes before it stopped if the throttle was stuck open. A valid excuse for a Toyota driver... no... for a 5.0 driver.... yes.

I really don't know the kid. All I know is that he's a normal teenager that graduated from high school and is now in college and also working as a shift manager at a UDF. But no personal connection.

What will never stop amazing me is how many people here were always perfect role models and never did anythimg stupid in their younger years.
I just hope that these people never have something like this happen to their sons/daughters.
