Soylent Green is made from people! Well, Soylent Green certainly shows its age, but I can't watch it without feeling (in some small way) the bitter depression of the society, the desperation of our hero, etc, therefore, I say it's great.

I'll also throw in my hat for Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove.

I'm also fairly certain Time Bandits is old enough to fit in here. :D

I forgot about The Thing! Awesome special effects for it's time. :D

I guess you are referring to the remake. I love the original from the 50s with James Arness as the Thing. Watched it numerous times on TV as a kid, and it scared me everytime.

Loved the original King Kong, and watched it so many times I have it memorized.

Also from the 30s is Shape of Things To Come.

And, to ditto an earlier post, Forbidden Planet. I have all 4 on DVD now.

One movie that has not been mentioned yet is Top Gun. Not for the storyline but for the flying scenes. This movie was done prior to CGI and all the flying was done by military pilots. One of the fighters was custom fitted with camera gear by the US Navy and paid for by the movie studio. Anyway, I enjoy putting the movie on from time to time just for the flying.

The flying was also done by model aircraft because some of the scenes were deemed to dangerous by the military... This one crossed my mind as well, but the fact that they tried to pass off the T-38/F-5 as a MiG and some of the other shots involving the wrong aircraft type or the sounds of piston engines when Iceman's jet gets shot up killed it for me.

Good movie though, just not WOW for me.

North By Northwest- Hitchcock at his finest.
Dances With Wolves- The photography of the open plains is stunning.
The Right Stuff- Should have won a bundle of Oscars but was misconstrued as a vehicle for John Glenn's presidential run.
Das Boot- Dripping with claustrophobic intensity.
    Local Hero- great subtle humor.
Airplane!- May be the funniest line and sight gag movie ever.
Life of Brian- My personal favorite of the Monty Python movies, as every political and religious group get nailed.
Star Wars- The movie really has so many layers to it to ponder.
Peyton Place- The first movie to bring up the seamy under belly of what happens behind closed doors.
