A discussion that myself and a few co-workers were having, I would have to say the first few Star Wars movies were just incredible for their time.

"2001, A Space Odessey" and digging WAY back.... "Gone With the Wind" was an incredible film and far ahead of the pack for it's time. It set the bar for others to follow decades later.

    "2001, A Space Odessey" .

Agree 100%. I first saw it about a year ago. Though I personally didn't like the movie, the special effects look amazing for a 1960's film. Hell, it looks better than some of the 80's films and even some films today where the whole damn screen is CGI... cough cough Star wars.

Are you serious? That movie is freakin' hilarious. I laugh more at it now than I did as a kid.

As for the OP's question, I assume he's asking about special effects laden movies?
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I'll second Aliens, but unfortunately Jaws has really started to show it's age in the last decade or so.

Don't know if these are WOW movies, but I enjoy watching Dr. Strangelove and also Fargo. I rarely watch movies more than once but these are exceptions to me.

In what way? The shark always looked fake (which is why it's good they so rarely show it) but outside of that it's still a GREAT film and I think it holds up very well.

Considering there are almost no "special effects" to speak of, however, I don't know that it really fits the topic.

I only said that before Knucklehead clarified his question. Quint's account of the SS Indianapolis is probably one of my top five favorite scenes of all time.

I always thought "The Abyss" (1989) was truly great; outstanding acting & the special effects were YEARS ahead of their time.

To pick something that hasn't already been listed, I'll say Sleuth (1972). No fancy effects or anything, just superb story and acting.

My real choice would be 2001: ASO :)
