Well. I dont want to go all out, and I am not doing any compitions or anything. So, I would say that I am willing to go to at least $300 as a cap for now. I still want to have a good set of comp's that will produce good mid bass, and still be clear as well.

I am really wanting to stay with 2 way for now.

As for power that would depend on the manufactures specs. I guess to answer that question as a whole in case it comes up again, I will go for at least the RMS rating. If I can I will go a little hight than the RMS to try and, hit the "sweet spot".

As for size. I know that it can not be any deeper than the DB coax's that I have now. They just barely fit (in the front door), and that is even with a 1/4" spacer or mounting bracket. So, I would like to safely say that 6 1/2's or 6 3/4 are good, but probably no bigger than an 8" driver.

I probably need to make a thicker mounting bracket out of 3/4" MDF

    Thanks.

Oh yes, the SR5250 rocks! I'll take out mine now, and try SR6500. :D
Looking forward to hear the difference, if there are any. ;)

I would tell you that the SR5250 can be had for a stellar price at frys. They are regular $399, I got them for $299 on sale, and KrazyMofo even got them for $249 a month or so ago. If you can hold out a bit, they might be worth looking into. With what you are looking for though, the MM line still might be a better fit. Before you purchase anything, you should listen to the SR's. I have them and would be willing to meet up for a listening session if we can work out a decent window.

Disclaimer: my car has no a/c, so the best time would be later in the day, probably 9ish or so, or early in the morning parked in a shady area.

No worries neither do I so, I understand. My truck has a/c but, just dont use it. LOL.

Yeah, that sounds like a plan. We can work out a time frame. I do thank you much for the invite. It would be nice to listen to those outside of a store. If ok with yourself I would like to bring some music along as well just to see how they would sound with some of my stuff. NOT trying to impose or anything, just remeber seeing some comment somewhere that said something like:

If you are gonig to test out speakers at a store, a good idea is to bring your own music. And see how what you listen to on a daily basis would sound, to give yourself a better idea.

Or something like that. When I read that I thought hmm.... Not a bad idea.

I will. But hey, the SR5250's are better than all 6.5" sets I've heard/tested! :)

Hmmmm...... That is a pretty bold statement. However considering that most of all the review's that I have read on these spearkers, both the sr5250's and the sr6500's (whent they were being produced....sad) have all been very positive.... Their have been some negative ones (but that is everywhere no matter what). Are there any other brands that come time for you as well that are close or match these speakers. I know that you are an avid fan of polk speakers (have read other posts by yourself), but are there any other ones that would meet my needs as well??? I think the difference between the two, would be in how they play say the 40hz note. They would both play 100hz with authority. If 100hz was say at 85db on the 6.5 cone and 83db on the 5.25", then 40hz would be down maybe 10db on the 6.5" and like 18-20db down on the 5.25".

The 6500 would have better mid bass and I can vouch for the fact that it has great balance between the mid bass and mid range. With both crossed at 50hz, the 5250 may need some additional support from the sub, maybe a bit of overlap. Mac who has competed with both mentioned that the mid range on the 5250 is more detailed. Probably because of a lesser bear down effect from the mid bass.

It's not about which speaker is better, its about which sound you prefer :). BTW would love to be there for the audition....

just got my mm6501 and mm840 installed... went camping during weekend and had about 12 hrs of listening (6hrs drive). ive to say these are great speakers, the tweeter sounds similar to RTI series than im familiar with, but less bright/harsh, the mid bass is awesome, kicks pretty hard with the right recording, and another thing i found out is mid bass is a great thing to have when driving, make you feel more energetic.
mm6501 sound great at low volumes, as i do listen to music at low volume half of the time, very detailed. the only down side of these speakers for me is the mids, i feel the mids are a little too clean, i would prefer some richer/warmer mids.
i havent got the EQ set up correctly yet, the bass is much stronger in the backseat, tighter at front seat.
mm840 what a great little musical sub, kicks very hard, tight and controled musical bass, blends perfectly with the components, excatly what i am looking for. it came witih no grill which really pisses me off.. i dont feel like spending another 40~50$ for a piece of plastic grill...and the sub is the only thing really needs some protection.

i have nothing for rear, they sound great in rear seat, im not planning to get another pair.

btw im powering them with MB Quart Onyx 4.60 amp, front 120w @2ohm, rear bridged 220w@4ohm to the sub.

as for other brands, i really liked the focal polyglass, the mids and highs are fantastic, but the mid bass not great. and those are too deep for my car.

That is pretty much what I got out of it for the most part, but like you said it is all up to your self, and your ears tell you.

Thanks for you info. Would you also be able to suggest anyother brands of speakers that would fit my need. You may want to go to the first page to see my needs, and what I am looking so, that you are up to speed. Any info or suggestions that you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Nice nice. Thank you for that. So, you are only running on set of comps for the whole car as well???

So, you think that the mid bass is too clean..?? Is there not enough "umph" behind them..?? Just making sure I understand a little better.

Well all in all sounds like these will be a good choice as well as the Polk SR series.

I am not trying to as high as Focal polyglass. I know that they are highly recommended, but they are just out side my price range at this moment.

    Any other recommendations??

i mean the mid-range is too clean. like male vocal, i prefer speakers with some colouration, makes the voice more "touching". but these are not breakin yet, hope it gets better after a week.
as for midbass, this is the best 6.5 inch woofer ive heard.
yes, im only running 1 pair of components for the whole car.
for all the car speakers ive heard within affordable price range, the focal polyglass is the only other speaker im very impressed with..
haven't heard the SRs. could only expect them to be better.

btw, i opened the doors on camp site and they can play very lound, can be heard from 100m away at 3/4 volume. but 8 inch sub is too small for outdoor listening, thats the only time i wish i had a 12inch :D

Ah.. I got it now thanks. Hmmm... I would think that the "clean" portion of the mid range will calm down after they are broken in a little more. I would think it would be like a new pair of shoes. At first they hurt you feet, and toes, but after a couple of weeks, and or months they conform to you, and then they become comfortable. So, lets hope that is the case, keep us posted for sure.

Good to know that they can still be heard that far away in an open area. Was it clear enough to hear the music, words, etc etc??

Any audition you definitely want to bring your own music. Can't really call it an audition unless you know what it is you are listening to. You want to be able to pick out any +/- for the speakers using music you are familiar with. If something is missing, you will notice. If there are things you have never heard before, you know you're listening to a good set of speakers.

One reason I think you might not be in tune with the SR5250 is because of the smaller size and its inability to hit lower with the authority of something such as, say, the older momo 6.5"s. Another is, as great as the SR line is, your ears might not be as refined yet to be able to tell a difference. You always want the best speakers you can get, but you also want the best bang for the buck. When I first auditioned SR6500's, I couldn't justify the price difference between those and the momo's. For what its worth, I still LOVE the momo's and refuse to sell them. I'm just waiting for another car to install them in.

There is so much to learn in car audio for those who have the desire to learn. I haven't seen another forum yet with as much quality advice and knowledge as this site, so you are definitely at the right place. I consider myself as just having dipped below the waterline of the iceberg and still have a great amount to learn.

I'll shoot you a PM when I get off work.

Sounds good to me. I get off at 5 so, I will check the PM after I get off as well.

Yeah you are so right. There is just so much information out there to learn. Just trying to learn the Ohm laws alone are such a pain but, if you are willing to learn, you can be taught. I am not even under the water yet... Im still trying to get off the tip of the berg ugh...... Oh well there is time and, I have faith.

Ok. So, to all the people who answered this post so far a big THANK YOU, and I have learned alot so far.

So, with that said, and the 6 1/2 done for the moment. I would like to now discuss power. Basically would like to know who makes a good amp that produces good quality power, and sound etc etc. Price range is going to be well under a $1,000.... I would be willing to spend $300.00 if needed. Also I plan on power the speakers to the recommended RMS power handling, maybe a little more to try an hit that "sweet" spot. I am going to (for now) go passive as well. (Will be easier for me at the moment.)

So, for argument's sake lets just keep with the MM comp's, and the SR5250's as good staring points. Please feel free to give a list of good amps that would meet my needs.

Again still new to this stuff so, I thank you ahead of time for your patience, and understanding.

for me $1000 is way over budget for amplifier. i did lot of research for my budget car audio, many brands make solid amps, Polk, JL Audio, Apline, MB Quart, Pioneer, Rockford etc...
i picked MB Quart Onyx series (4.60) @ sonicelectronix for my low budget, basically its a new generation replacing the DSC series (which have excellent review, basically ppl say these aren't entry level amp, cleanest amp theyve heard etc so i think it cant be bad).
Those are beautifully made amp, solid built, very clean, lots of features, dont get hot etc..

anyways, i recommend mb quart onyx 4.80 as 4 channel amp, and onyx 1.1500(1ohm stable @1500watts). they will give u everything u need without spending extra. save the money on subs. u also prob need alternator/capacitor if u go for that much power.

what kind of sub you looking for?

also outdoor open enviornment offers the poorest listening enviornment, theres no way to archieve desirable reverberation time that human ears desires (2.0sec by sabine equation),without sound reflector.

Yeah the $1,000 range is way high but, fir the people who do competitions that is nothing. For the rest of us that is a pretty high amount so, I agree.

You know MB Quart seems to come alot when you look up car audio. If I am not mistake Maxsonix took over MB Quart or is it the other way around?????????????? At any rate this name comes up alot, and they seem to get pretty good reviews. Thanks I will take a look at them.

As for subs here is my thread on that.

    http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104602

Or you can find it under Speaker Selection IYO, please feel free to give me your thoughts suggestions on either the speakers that I have listed or one's that you would recommend as well.

    Thanks.

Yeah the $1,000 range is way high but, fir the people who do competitions that is nothing. For the rest of us that is a pretty high amount so, I agree.

yes maxsonix took over MB Quart im not sure if that mean anything to you.
for my understanding of power when come to car audio, you want to get good, clean power that whatever your speaker can handle at max. if you parrallel connect your dual DVC sub i think you can get the max (1ohm) out of your amplifier, 1500watts is enough.

Around $300, the momo is hard to beat. I personally have never played with momo comps, but if they are like their subs its amazing. You can always look into HAT Clarus and JBL GTO. I believe I bought each of those sets for around $300 and they have good midbass response in a passive setup.

If you go active, you can make any speaker sounds like any high end set. All it takes is time & patient.

As for amps, I'm currently running all pdx. They sound great, provide clean power, and most importantly efficient. I really like the specs of the new jbl ms amps, I'm planning on buy a few to test out. I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy a capacitor.

Here's a list of a few brands that will get your feet wet:
    alpine
    us amps
    jl
    arc
    jbl
    infinity

I personally would never run anything in 1 ohm or 2 ohms, why strain your engine and amp and diminish its life in the process?

Edit: I repeat, DO NOT BUY CAPACITORS.

Thank you much. I will look into those.

As for capacitors I do not plan on getting one of these. That is what the alt is for, along with inline fuse's etc etc. The electical aspect of things I will take special car to make sure I dont fry anything.

As for ohms go, I think if the sub is set up for a certan ohm then I will try to find an amp that will suits it. At the same time I do not want to over stress the electrical, and engine so..... point taken, thank you sir.

Well yeah, I've already recommended the SR5250 - in addition to one good subwoofer,
you get a great setup IMO. Use amps on everything, one 4-channel and one mono block.
With active crossover through Pioneer P88RS-II for example, you can tune in this...
But remember, a good mounting/install is much more important than which speaker you get. ;)
You can get a pretty crappy speaker-set playing pretty good if you install it right!

Thank you. I am keeping the SR's in mind, along with the MM's. These are my two running choices for now. Any other ones come to mind??

As for amp, and set up. I plan of doing a class A/B 4 channel amp for the mids, and either a class D, DE, of H. 1 channel mono amp for the sub (s). Also plan on going passive for now just get to get used to the comp's. Which reminds me, which sub did you mention again. I forgot...got alot going on this month....

As for Pioneer hu...looks like a nice HU, but I do not like the rotating dials, and just really not digging the sytle. However now that you bring up an "active" HU with 24 bit D/A on it, since I have the Clarion CZ500 for now, and like the look, I think I might do their FZ709... It has the 24 bit, and it is touch screen, and I just like the look of that one better sorry, but I do like the suggestion. I also know alpine makes one as well, but again I just do not like the looks of it.

For mounting I am deading my truck a little at a time. Got the front doors done with two layers, and the roof with one (may put in another layer not sure), and plan on making custom mounting brackets out of 3/4 mdf. Luckly I keep the original speakers so, I can use them as a template.

    Thanks.

Ture true. This is what I have found out over the months, and shifting through forum's...(which I might add seems to be the best one out there as far as adivse professionalism go), specs, etc etc.

Side note read about when your speaker blew on the left side I think. Glad to know that you were taken car of. Makes me want to lean toward polk even more. Sort of......... Kinda seemed though that they we not so willing there for a while (red flag) however that does not say that it is always that way. Kinda hit or miss.

    Thanks.

The sr's are a discontinued series. Polk stood behind them. The MM's that you're looking at are current production series. They are covered by the "No questions asked" warranty.

For lifelike, balanced sound buy Polk.

The sr are still under warranty as long as you buy the sr from a polk authorize dealer. It may take poke a while to find you a replacement as they did with one of my sr124, but they found one 2months later and replaced it with no question asked.

Sounds good! Other good choices for front speakers? DLS is a good choice, I think.
But since you're at the Polk-forum, I think you should go for Polk speakers. It's good ya! :D

And arun, I know I took it a little far - but my point was,
that mounting/sounddeadening is very important too...
