I'll come across as the ****, but if you communicate verbally like you communicate via the pen you're going to limit your opportunities.

I realize it's only a forum, but there's no reason that you can't make an honest attempt at decent grammar. You'd come across as a much smarter guy with just some small tweaks in your communication style.

I find the OP's grammar to be fairly acceptable, even if sometimes I haven't a clue what he's talking about. :) There are far worse offenders on this forum - in this thread, even. ;)
PC, you need a mindless job that will get you by while you put all of your effort into your studies. You need to develop a passion for studying and learning that rivals your passion for posting on here. As a matter of fact, when school starts up again, I don't want to see you posting until all your homework's complete, son.

Ah man that last sentence there gave me quite a laugh. Matter of fact I am doing research for a paper as you were typing that response. And thanks for the complement that my grammar is indeed acceptable for an audio forum...where I thought most of our heads were tuned to our ears for details and not our eyes for the poor misguided use of grammar on some forum that is a mere hobby.
Oh well, don't worry studies or generally my first priority. I don't want to be wasting money you know? (It could go to more audio gear!)

PerfectCreature, is the HR (Human Resources) dept the same for both Sears and KMart? If so try to speak to your HR rep. They should help you figure out what to do as far as movement within or up in the company. You shouldn't have to submit notice or fill out a job app just to find out what the pay is. Find out what your options are for advancement--if there are none, then start looking for something else. I know its easier said than done but...

At the company I work for, we've hired high school and college interns with little to no experience and they got paid a lot more than that--Big companies like spending small $$$ (relatively speaking-but more than min wage) for basic type jobs--then while working you can keep educating yourself, either through classroom, or self pace training and gain the knowledge and hands on experience you need to move up through the company. Sometimes when you're starting out, with not options, getting your foot in the door of a bigger company can take you places. Working at or near min wage jobs will get you nowhere fast.
Of course I hesitate to suggest this, since I never made this choice myself and the risk involved, but have you thought about the military? A couple years in the military can provide you with a good foundation in skills, and many can find a half decent job in the civilian defense contractor sector when they're done.

I know you didn't ask for that level of advice, but I felt compelled to try to offer something up. Good Luck in whatever you end up doing.

Already considered military given the current state that US is as a nation I feel it ill advised to join. I have taken Criminal Justice instead. I come from a long line of Military. My grandfather was a general in the Air Force, my uncle was in the Navy as commander during desert storm, I also had an uncle that was in the air force cannot remember what rank he was. My cousin is now enlisted in the marine and will be going in as a First Lieutenant. I have a few famly members that participated in Vietnam...
Almost joined marines but he made my deal sound way to good to be true so I told him I would do Police force and then reconsider at a later date.

As for working at sears or kmart, it is just a stepping stone I do not plan on spending any time after I graduate at either places.
As for the HR already talked to the kmart one, the sears one was out for the day so I didn;t get a chance to compare....

Well, the discount I get now is 20% off clothes and shoes, and then 10% off anything else.
    ......

A friend of mine works at Best Buy and if I heard him correctly, he gets like 50% off for his discount--now if your into audio and like having company discounts...

After High school I took a year off of school before going back to school...anyway I was making about $9+/hr (+ health benefits) at a factory/manufacturer type job --essentially a mindless job operating 80 ton press brakes punching or bending steel, panel cutting wood, or assembling shelving, etc, etc--and that was back in the late 80s early 90s as I was just out of high school.

About 8 years ago I took a part time job (2nd job for extra money) driving an ambulance (as an EMT) for about $11/hr about 16 hours a week or every other w/e). That was easy work. I think Min Wage was still $5.25 or $5.75 back then. I'd rather work harder in less time for more money, than longer for less.

I would imagine college classes and schedules can limit your choices but there has to be something--Somehow my wife worked 3 jobs through college and still managed to graduate in the top of her class.

Good to hear--but still try to find something more enjoyable--less stressful.

Well I hope you have better luck than my experiences with customer service for either (where you call in for assistance)--its enough to drive one batty!

Bingo!! Having raised four kids and getting my wife through her Master's, Ed hit the nail on the head. Stay where you are, suck it up and get your education. Don't feel bad if the wife has to pull most of the load. That's part of being married.

My wife and I have gone back and forth on who was the big bread winner. Sometimes her, sometimes me. As long as there was food on the table and a roof over our heads, it didn't matter who brought the check home. Your wife has her education, now go get yours! In a few years, you can look back at the jobs you held and cherish them for what they got you through.

That is true. I guess we will see on Monday what this job really entails.
I mean, I can do the sales, I have great customer service skills....working at Kmart I developed a huge customer base that I can take over to sears...
Issue is...the little grey areas. Plus my manager practically begged me to stay...so that makes it hard. I'm kind of the only one who is trained for my job, and actually takes it seriously. I do most of her work for her so she probably has gotten a little laid back since I have no problem with discipline.

    three considerations:
    1. the new job description seem like more interesting than ur current job, so yes.
    2. ull need to ask the pay and sign the contract before u switch, 8.25$ isnt much, if its lower than that i wont do.
    3. take a look at what they doing.

it is possible. I worked a full 40hours a week and did my undergrad full time. Yes it sucks because I was working a lot but I still had my fun lol. I would go out week night do my thing ect. Did it make for some tough mornings yes, but it was possible. I would normally have class in the morning hours, then go to work 1-10 or 2-11 and would work every other weekend. If I worked a weekend I got a day off during the week so that was normally my catch up sleep and HW day. I'm not saying its for everyone and yes finals sucked because I would study all the time, but I still did decent in terms of GPA and graduated in 4 years with a double major, and that was after switching my major in my sophmore year to something totally different. My job I did during school was customer care for the bank I currently work for. I sat on my butt at a computer and took phone calls about issues blah blah blah. I got paid pretty decent IMO and after I graduated was able to stay with the same company in the job I'm at now and enjoy.

If I was going to school, and still young of course I would work at StarBucks before Sears or Kmart. you get good benefits and they work around your school schedule.

Yeah, I will definatley stay away from sears if it would pay less.
I have talked to the people who had worked there for awhile and they said that they ave never made under 10 an hour with commission...and that during holiday season they make 30-40 an hour.

Well there you go--try to negotiate a raise :D

How much would it cost them to train somebody-or how many sales might they lose--I'd imagine the fact that the manager would have to work more is incentive as well..

It is all corporately done, raises are out of the question. We would all be having raises as well, its the store as a whole gets a raise or no one at all....that how it is done now...for Kmart.
