Yeah, don't worry. I will not end up like my cousins, they skipped out on school and know are struggling to make ends meet. I will be behind because of debt from loans to pay for school, but only for a few years...then I will start to get it all back and more.
    Hopefully anyway.
So, vote is just apply, during interview ask for what I will be paid and all that good stuff?

IMHO, I'd look for better oppurtunities over both of those options.
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. Hell, you could wait tables or bartend and in one night make as much as you do retail. Since your working part time retail, the pay is probably in line, but I wouldn't count on raising a family on that. Those jobs are not ment for huge pay increases or fast track advancement,it is what it is and after you outgrow it,you leave. Seems like you've outgrown it so look for something else. Seems silly to me at your age to worry over a .50 raise on 25 hours a week. Find a better job, period.

I have tried, they all tell me I am not qualified because I am a college student and require a flexible schedule.
Plus, job opportunities where I live are slim, and mostly comprise of grocery stores or retail outlets.

I have to agree that now I know it is only a part time job that the wage is more realistic, most companys dont offer much to PT employees simply because they know that for most it's a stepping stone and they dont want to offer much in the way of training or benefits if they know the employee will likely only be there a few months. that being said once you get finished with school it sounds like you need to move out of your little town to someplace that has more oppurtunities.

I'll come across as the ****, but if you communicate verbally like you communicate via the pen you're going to limit your opportunities.

I realize it's only a forum, but there's no reason that you can't make an honest attempt at decent grammar. You'd come across as a much smarter guy with just some small tweaks in your communication style.

go for for a bank as a teller. round here and its a town of only 11,000 where I live and the town where I work is 24K they still pay around 9.50-11.50 an hour for a teller job and thats part time. heck then you could move up to senior teller, or teller sup and make 35K a year or more....

also make sure if you want to go back to school you stick to it. After awhile you start saying oh well I'll finish next year, then the next and then put it off get married, have kids and never go back....(this is my brothers life story with grad school always said was going to go back, yet never did and he only had 1 more class to go, and it was to build a table, no joke, wood tech major, 4 years under grad, 2 years grad 1 more class but wanted "a change" and then never went back.

If I ever get out of what I do now, I swear I would try to go work for UPS or FedEx. If I could get a 5am to 4pm shift or something like that that would allow me benefits and to be home with my wife and kids regularly, that would be it.

You sure about that? I got delivery of a couple of 23" monitors yesterday from UPS at 7:30 pm. He said he still had about twenty stops to go!During the holidays I've had them show up as late as 9:00 pm.

If you work in the warehouse the hours are more stable. Buddy of mine works like 3am-11am. I wouldn't want that schedule, but he likes it.

PC, ever thought about valeting? I did that several years ago and made over $200 cash working two mights a week. Plus, it's cash money every night, no waiting on a check. Obviously no benefits, etc. Great work for a college student.

I was kinda thinking the same thing....too much time wondering if your going to work for K-Mart or Sears, not saying there is anything wrong with working for them but hopefully these employers are just a stepping stone.
All of the excuses are good but if they want the temp employees to stick around paying them properly is a good option, right?

We do not many hotels where I live, just a rather large one and they do not hire people with out some sort or experience which I have none. As for the grammar comment; it comes down to this, I work all day I come home I have to be polite all day long be all formal and such and I don't feel like doing the same when I get home.
You can read what I type right? It makes sense the way my sentence structure flows right?
At least I am not typing the horrid 411 speak or whatever it is called.
Bank teller? Never even thought of that. Funny how I visit the bank at least twice a week and it never crossed my mind.

As for the Sears interview I talked over with my manager. She said that I would be more than welcome to come back to and work for them. BUT! I would take a pay cut and start out as a cashier if there was a spot available.
I talked to the people that work there. They said it is a bass pay of $7 an hour then commission on top of that. One person said they pay you up to the 7.50 an hour but take away what they payed you to get you to 7.50 when you make more than your 7.50...so. I am not sure if that is a good option yet.
The interview has been moved to monday because the guy who was interviewing me called out sick.

ummm I would either A stay where your at and go back to school, or B seriously look for a different job.

A teller job really is not too bad. You would have customer service skills, as well as cash handling, ect and often they would not require you to have a college degree, just be graduated from high school. If you typically can do a decent job there are other banking positions out there (once again a lot of them you don't need a college degree) that would pay better. You might have SOME sales you would have to do as a teller. Ours have to refer 3 people a month to a personal banker for something. Could be opening another account, loan, money market ect and they don't even have to close the sale, just be referred. Pretty easy to do when they walk right up to you every day....

Yeah, the teller job. I may look into that. As for restaurant work, hate it. Did it for about 3 months did like it one bit.
Those who keep saying I need to go back to college. I am in college. I just need a job to help pay for college while I am in it. Hoping to curb that monster loans after the fact syndrome.
Yeah I do not have any mechanical backgrounds so that would be a no, I had thought about it before, may pick up a class on it along with a computer class just so I have the know how, but that would have to be later on...

The Pep Boys I used to work at paid the full-time service writers as much as $15 an hour. Part time guys got at least $8.50 and made close to 30 hours a week. I worked part time and went to school while also working a 2nd part time job. I got $8.50 an hour at Pep Boys and volunteered for whatever time I could get. Even if it was coming in at 4AM to unload and load trucks. We got paid every week and at Pep Boys alone I would clear over $400 easily.

The big chain stores pay fairly well and are quite flexible with hours. You don't need any skills to work the electronic ticketing system or the electronic parts lookup. It's easy as pie and the stores aren't real big. Plus they will train you. The employee discount is pretty high too. I don't know about benefits for a part-timer. You could probably do full-time and work the weekends. I had a manager there that worked 6 hours on 2 week nights and then did 12 hours on Saturday and 9 hours on Sunday and unloaded a truck for 3 hours on a Tuesday. Made 36 hours a week and that was enough to qualify for full-time employment in NJ. That meant he qualified for benefits. The rest of the time he went to school and got a degree in Computer Science.

Well, the discount I get now is 20% off clothes and shoes, and then 10% off anything else.
We do not have a pep boys though ha.
We have sears, VIP, Nappa....and that is about it aside from local mechanics that buy their parts online.
I don't really care much about bennifits, I mean I get great benefits from my wife's job. She is a CNA and cince the hospital doubles as a veterans home, we get full coverage through the hospital, and for glasses a buddy of my dad owns a shop so we get them at decent prices....
