Is that as convenient as a VPI? No, but it only cost me ~$80 vs $400 (average price of used VPI). The DIY record vacuum was given to me by my brother who bought a VPI. I've listened to records cleaned on his VPI (many of my own records). I've listened to records that I've cleaned using the Spin Clean/DIY. They sound every bit as good as the ones that were cleaned on the VPI.

    Hi billbillw,

As you can see from other threads elsewhere, I am thinking a lot about the Spin Clean. How well did it perform without the DIY vacuum, relative to your brother's VPI?

The Spin Clean works very well at cleaning, but you have to have a way to get it dry quickly (otherwise, residue stays on the record). I did it with rags/microfiber cloths for a long time, but then I was given a DIY vacuum and it works much better that way. Clean with the spin clean, put it on the vacuum to dry it. I'd put the results up against what you can get with VPI or Nitty Gritty.

Thanks TK, but does he mean that the DIY vacuum produces better sounding records than a rapid wiping, or that it is just easier to dry.

Jimbo, in my experience and IMHO a vacuum system is a must. Even after careful steps have been taken to clean and rinse an LP even with the purest of distilled water, letting them air dry, spin dry or wiping them dry still leaves residue and some nasties deep in the grooves. A vacuum sucks it all right out. For particularly dirty records a step method of using various record cleaning fluids and vacuuming after each application of these fluids would ensure that the record comes out in pristine clean.

If you are going to go with the Spin Clean product, I strongly recommend putting together a vacuuming system.

There are many threads here that describe different methods of making a vacuum system. I particularly like bikerboy's (Jeff) DIY vacuum he made.
