I'm sure Rush will dedicate no less than an hour to it today.

This is grade-A Conservative red meat: antagonism wrapped in the American flag is heralded as persecuted patriotism by the PC liberal agenda.

The kids were stupid to use the flag as a weapon; the hispanics were stupid for taking offense; the principal is stupid for ripping open a can of worms; the parents are stupid for not acknowledging the intent of their kid's actions; and the all-to-predictable knee-jerk reaction to follow is as stupid as we should expect by now.

Well, at least there was a happy ending. The District pulled rank and let the kids back in, as they should have.

I'm sure the kids were aware that wearing those clothes on that day would probably cause a problem of some sort, but unless they had a record of trouble-making at the school or were openly mocking or speaking out against Cinco de Mayo, the administration should have stayed out of it.

    Kids will be kids.

I wear an American Flag hat every St. Patrick's Day. The Irish people have never been offended. What does that say about them? What does it say about some Mexicans?

Exactly ... and probably only did it because they knew it would cause a problem.

Here goes another modern day Mc Carthyism inspired bashing fest of Kalifornia, I suppose. Steve, I don't know where you dig this stuff up, nor why you think it needs to be on C.P.

It says that most of those Irish are too drunk to distinguish between green and red!

    Kex,

Why should it cause a problem that an American kid is wearing an American t-shirt, in an American school?

Embarrassed are you? Yahoo news. Why would you not want the news displayed--half-hearted commitment?

What that says to me is that the Irish no longer feel that they are the target of racism or degrading jokes ... which very much DID used to be the case ... and are now fully integrated into the American culture.

I don't think any British flags would be in the slightest bit welcome at a Saint Patrick's Day parade in the United Kingdom ... in fact, the wearers would probably end their day fairly well bruised and abused.

It saddens me to see the American flag be deemed a symbol of "hate-speech" in our OWN COUNTRY by those that supposedly come here to breathe free. This is an invasion, not immigration, and the saddest part is that nobody seems to care. Those that do care are called racist for no other reason than wanting to see our laws enforced.

Unless these kids have a track record of wearing patriotic clothing on days other than one celebrated by the hispanics in their school, there's no reason to believe their motive was anything other than an antagonistic response to Cinco de Mayo. Us versus Them--your wear "your" colors, we'll wear "ours."

If that's not abundantly clear, there's no point in discussing it further.

Cinco De Mayo has little to no significance anywhere except in the USA. It's a celebration of a fluke victory a couple centuries ago that only Mexican-Americans celebrate...for some reason.

Obviously the fact that the holiday is based on something historically insignificant has no bearing on the fact that it DOES mean a lot to some people.

Cool down, Steve, for goodness sake, and stop flying off the handle slinging insults in all directions.

I have no idea if I agree with the shool's decision, but for the sake of argument, let's assume that if you stroll by a group of LEGAL Mexican immigrants on the one day of the year intended to celebrate Mexican culture (which has been an integral part of American culture for quite some time BTW, just like Irish culture or Italian culture), parading American flags in a provocative manner, you may be intending to imply that they are not welcome here, and should "go home".

There is no way for us, with the little information provided, to determine whether or not these kids were being intentionally provocative, but they may have been sent home for their intent to cause a disturbance, and only indirectly because they used American flags to arrive at that end.

When did it become a crime to love America, to respect her history and it's founding principles? When did it become "hatespeech" to honor our Nation's Flag, or to proudly proclaim ourselves to be AMERICANS?

Cinco de Mayo is not even a Mexican holiday. It was made up here in America and the last time I checked, ANYONE in this country can speak out about anything according to the Constitution.

    Hello,
Everyone calm down, please. Using a substitute letter(s) in a swear word doesn't clean it up. Find a different way of expressing yourself than using foul language.
The original idea of the Clubhouse section was to discuss fairly harmless events, that fall outside of audio/video subjects, on a daily basis. It wasn't intended to be a forum for controversial, deeply felt social subjects. It is possible that this section could be eliminated if it doesn't return to a less hostile breeding ground.
    Catch my drift?
    Thanks, Ken

Well, at the very least I am being accused of being embarassed (to be Californian, or American, or both ... I'm not sure), and of half-hearted commitment. My post did not warrant either, but there's a mood here recently where you must agree 100% with any political post, or you're branded a liberal, anti-American, anti-constitution, ... That, in itself, is anti-democratic and very anti-American from my point of view. There's no need to shout people down (virtually) who don't agree with you.

Actually, you have no idea how similar we might possibly be, and what you say makes plenty of sense, but I still prefer to think outside of the box as often as possible, rather that let a media clip provoke predictable knee jerk reactions.

Why is this thread even here? Not appropriate on CP, IMO. We keep adding nails to the coffin......soon the coffin will be nailed shut permanently. Let's use some common sense and leave these extremely polarizing subjects off CP.
