Very cool Bro, I imagine that mass loading them with lead shot would make them sound even better than spiking them. 93db! Again they are beautiful. I would definitely not cover them up with speaker cloth.

I recently upgraded to a pair of SDA-2's thinking my wife would hate the big speakers in our living room. They made such a big difference in the sound that she's encouraging me to keep upgrading equipment. How cool is that?

You struck a memory chord with me. I remember when "specially marked" cereal boxes had 45 RPM records on the back of the box. You cut it out with a scissors and could play it on your record player.

There is a thin film of conductive plastic (Saran, in the case of the Quad ESL-57s) suspended between electrodes. The whole shooting match is in an electrostatic field (ca. 5 kV at minuscule current); application of an offset voltage derived from the input music signal makes the membrane "flutter" within the field, thus producing sound. It's similar in action to a ribbon or planar driver, but the "motor" is an electrostatic field instead of a magnetic field.

    They sound great!

(EDIT: Those who know the vintage Quads well will recognize that mine are footless! They are carefully propped up to the correct angle for my listening chair in the photo... and I do have a pair of aftermarket stands for them)

The cat (Harpo the Houndcat) is indeed real; but he isn't ours :-P He is my son's girlfriend's cat... long story.

Now back to speakers: woofers, squawkers, and tweeters; no more meowers!

I'm really jealous. The shop I normally go to (Hi Fi Heaven in GB, WI) carries these, however never got a chance to listen to them. Well they had the Focus HD's but the 20/20 I heard are very close. Man they are just beatiful speakers and always wanted to pick a pair up if I could.
