Re: New Polk L800s Crackling/"Shrieking" with SDA
Left and right was the first thing I checked when the crate arrived and when I opened the box. Confirmed.
At least with the old SDA design for which there are a few schematics in the wild, AMP OUT 1 was basically pushing SPEAKER 1 and SDA 2, which was all then tied back with a common ground internally to AMP OUT 2. Vice versa for AMP OUT 2. I need to test again with SDA connected and one of the amp channels off. It *should* cause one speaker to play, and one SDA to play, with the crackling on the SDA channel. If it doesn't, the crossover is more complex. Heading home to try more configurations and pieces of gear to (hopefully) figure out what's gone wrong.

Re: New Polk L800s Crackling/"Shrieking" with SDA
The Parasound HCA-3500 is an old amp. If it has not been serviced, it is well past it's prime, no matter what the weight is. Electronics age and wear out plain and simple. If it were mine I find an authorized service center and have them go through it and replace ALL resistors, capacitors and miscellaneous parts that have worn out and all service bulletins issued on the amp. That should get you another 20+ years
Maybe start with contacting Parasound, they've in the past have been very helpful with helping finding or having you ship directly to them. Excellent customer service.

Re: Grabbed a pair of ES20's
The streamer was a bust. I've had good luck with Ali Express in the past. But there was a shipment error and the unit was returned to the seller (w/no explanation). My $$$ is in the process of being refunded. In this case I'd rather have the product. There are other outlets to buy from. I am not really ready yet. I just jumped on it because of the good price. Other places are selling it for $109 or $119. I can wait
On the ES20's, they are pretty impressive for their size and price. Probably 5-8 hours on them now. Dare I say they are perfect for my application. They really don't do anything wrong. Even sitting and half assed critically listening. They have great presence, they are open and present a decent sound stage, depth and height is limited. Vocals are clear and mostly uncolored. The tweeter is detailed, crisp and smooth, no raspiness. The presentation is very even and well integrated. With the right recordings they can even disappear.
So far, they are a very impressive speaker for the $$$. I'll say they have exceeded my expectations and lived up to the very positive reviews. I don;t know what Mojo Polk has had the past 5-6 years but they are putting a consistently great product at each price point for every budget to enjoy without feeling like they overspent for a mediocre product.
I especially like the rounded cabinets. They look more modern and expensive.
These are my impressions so far.
