This morning my wife and I attended the memorial service for my neighbor and golfing buddy who died of lung cancer 10 days ago.

He put up the good fight. He was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer last fall. It was soon discovered that it had metastasized to his brain.

He suffered through chemotherapy. He underwent radiation treatments. He tried immunotherapy.

He finally began an experimental treatment about a month ago. After two weeks the doctors told him that it wasn't working and that he had about six months to live.

He died a week later.

I loved the guy.

I'm at the point now that I can only think about all the things I should have and could have done with him and all the things I could have and should have said to him over the past few weeks.

"Getting old; ain't it Hell," in the words of my late mother.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

    I wonder though why lung cancer seems to always take off for the brain?
    Several friends and relatives have had the same thing happen it just seem more prevalent with lung cancer.

    I have three friends ive known since High School and talk to weekly, if not daily, quite often. Fantasy Football leagues, get togethers, concerts, parties, yearly golf trips and 10 - 15 rounds in-between. Been through births, deaths, divorces, job loss, gain and just life in general. I hope I go first (selfish, i know).

    Remember the great times and the difficult. Good friends are a blessing.

    Cancer certainly does suck, and so does getting old.

    My friend was a good man, and he had reasonably long life of 74 years, which he used very well as a business leader, a hard-working and effective volunteer for worthy charitable purposes, and as a husband, father and grandfather.
