Monitor 5 jr, tweeter replacement issues.

Hi all, I hope that everybody is doing well,
This is my first post on this forum, although I am a lurking here for some time now. I own two sets of Monitors that I really enjoy, a Monitor 4 series 2 and a Monitor 5jr that I just purchased to hookup into an old Marantz 2270.
I read, that is strongly recommend to replace the SL2000 twiters with the RD0194-1. I have tested the speakers with my system, and I have to admit that I did not dislike the highs, they sound pretty good. Probably, due the the Marantz dark nature.
In any case I am willing to experiment, can you please give some direction before I screw up anything:
What is the Monitor 5jr impedance?6ohm or 8ohm? I've found some contradictory information online.
Can you please let me know if I can try the SL2500 or the RD0198-1 without problems?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Best

I'm guessing that the RD0-194 is the correct replacement tweeter, but I recommend that you call Polk customer service at the toll free number at the top of the home page. I'm sure they can help you. If you tell them you're a member of Club Polk you get the tweeters for $48 each with free shipping in the US."Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer

Hi, and welcome to Club Polk. The 5Jr+s are 6ohm nominal/8 ohm compatible. Very easy to drive.
The RDO-194-1 tweeters are the drop-in replacements, and no modifications are required. I would also consider upgrading the crossovers, since they're 25+ years old. The 5Jr+s can be modified to use the better RDO-198-1 Tweeters. The 12uf cap is replaced by a 13.5uf cap. The Polyswitch is also eliminated. I wouldn't bother with the SL2500 Tweeters, since the 194 and 198 tweeters are far better.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Thanks fir the replies, ill call polk audio tomorrow and will place an order. By the way, my speakers are the 5jr. The 5jr+ have a bigger passive radiator, I think.
-
Would the Peerless be a good option here too?

No. The 5jr has no passive, it is a ported design. Yours are 5jr+s. -

No, the rdos are the best options. The peerless would require crossover modifications and the cutout is too big. -

Only the earliest 5jr versions were ported. Later 5jr and 5jr+ models BOTH had a 6-1/2" PR. -
The grills are upside down.
True that. Give the grilles a 180-degree rotation so the emblems are in the lower right corner and (of course!) turn the emblems so they read properly when they're repositioned. -

Thanks! The speaker do sound sweet on the Marantz. Probably, the drifted caps are doing their magic . Anyway, I had to kick back the Treble one notch to center, the Bass is one center and the Mid is one past center and loudness on, and both high/low pass filters are off.
I only listen at low volumes, have to admit that I was happy with the Monitor 4 series 2 that I still own. Then someone told me that I should get better speakers to match the receiver. Is not a great step up, but there's a difference. The Monitor 5 have a punchier sound and more presence.
Here is a pic of my rig. I have turned the grille around, it was looking off

Very nice set up ya got there. I have the 2252b with 7's on stands & it brings me happiness to my ears. if you do the RDO change over please keep us posted on your impressions of before & after thoughts. BTW my 5jr's are a blonde color (edit: it could be my eyesight) & i really enjoy them as they are. Good Luck on your upgrades..

cortico, get those speakers up off the ground - preferably to about tweeters at ear level when in your favorite comfy listening chair - on some stands, with a slight back tilt if possible, and they will sound ever so much better.
Also, WELCOME to Club Polk! -

and you have a wonderful beautiful PL530(?)570 I might add!

I have looking inside, to check the year of manufacturing 1989 there's a jr+ stamp on the magnets: -
The MW6502 is used in alot of the Monitor speakers & can be switched out which is a big plus- http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?38755-POLK-AUDIO-Speaker-Wiring-Schematics-amp-More-ALL-MODELS-except-SDA..

Nice setup. Getting those speakers up on stands and tilted back a bit will really make you say WOW!

I've had those before, be careful the rods don't pull out of the foam tubes while you're setting them up.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Interesting stands-those will work alot better than the floor. You should notice a big difference hearing the tweeters at your ears..

Remember to tell customer service you are club polk member to get free shipping. The price has not changed since the start of the thread.
Just to be sure you are getting the right tweeter, (get them in pairs and replace both) the RD0194 is the replacement for the tweeter pictured (SL2000). The RD0198, is preferred but requires the aforementioned change in the crossover capacitor from 12uF to 13.5uF. Later model 5jr+'s had a black tweeter with a foam ring around them (SL2500). These already have the 13.5uF cap, and the RD0198 is the proper replacement.
The new tweeters will likely sound a little harsh at first but will break in and get smoother with regular play. I've noticed a change after about 10hrs on mine so far. ~100hrs is recommended.
If you plan on upgrading the crossovers let us know. There are recommended components that work well.
Lastly glue the magnets on the 6.5" drivers. Loctite Powergrab is recommend. A search should bring up a couple of threads.
These are recent

Ah! Welcome, this was my first post and discussion thread on this forum, I learned a lot about polks here.
The photo above makes me feel a bit nostalgic, my main rig improved quite a bit since then, I am really happy with how it sounds.
