Replacing Yamaha RX-V2500

I recently bought a Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray player and am thinking about buying another receiver. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V2500 (no HDMI or DD TrueHD or DTS MA). It outputs 130w/ch. It is powering a pair of Polk Audio RTi10's, pair of Polk Audio RTiA1's, and a Polk Audio CSi5. There is also an Epik Knight sub (a beast) with the speakers crossed over at 80 hz.

I'm looking at the following receivers and would like to know how they stack up to the one I currently have. I don't want to give up any sound quality. It must also be able to run the RTi10's without a problem.

HK 354
Onkyo 806
Onkyo 706
Onkyo 876
Pioneer 1018AH
Pioneer 01TXH
Pioneer 91TXH

Thanks for any comments or advice.

If you really like your receiver, there's no need to replace it...if the Panny has 5.1/7.1 analog out & your AVR has 5.1/7.1 inputs. This way the player does the decoding & sends it thru the analog cables. This is what I'm planning on doing with my NAD T773 & future BD player.

I'd never get away from a Yammy!
Sounds like you have one of the higher end ones?
I'd be hard pressed to replace that....looks pretty feature packed!

Anything you'd gain with replacing it probably isn't worth the hassle.
At best I'd get a better Yammy maybe....if ya never had trouble with yours why switch brands?

I thought about doing this, but this receiver is not capable of boosting the LFE level through the analog inputs. LFE is encoded 10db to 15db lower than the other tracks. If the decoding is done in the receiver, the LFE level would be raised to compensate for this. In the player, this does not happen, and most Blu-Ray player's bass managment abilities won't let you adequately raise the LFE level. Some newer receivers allow bass boosting via analog. Unfortunately, mine is not one of them. Thanks for the reply.

I have the same receiver and for HT I only use Yamaha's. I guess I am use to them. If I were you I would check out the newer models of Yamaha such as the RX-V2700. I love my Yamaha's. I have the RX-V2200 and 2300 model also which are 6.1 systems. If you could find a flagship model which is one or two years old you would be in great shape. What type of money are you planning on spending.
Polk HT system 1: LSIC, LSI25 mains, LSI F/X rears, Lsi F/X rear centers,

Can the RX-V2700 accept LPCM via HDMI? My Blu-Ray player is capable of decoding DD TrueHD and DTS MA and outputting a PCM signal. If it can, this could be an option.

Any of the Onkyo's would be good. I have a TX-SR606...and I love it. The 706, 806 and 876 are all fantastic receivers too. I wanted to get the 706 or 806 when I was shopping for a receiver, but my budget didn't really allow it. Personally I'd recommend one of the Onkyo's, but if you're happy with the sound that you're Yamaha puts out, you may be best off just upgrading to a newer Yamaha with more updated features

in a nutshell some of the older HDMI capable receivers did not have built in decoders for the new HD audio formats (DDTrueHD and DTS MA). But they were rated at i believe HDMI spec V.1.2 which was capable of accepting an audio signal over HDMI, just the player itself had to do the decoding. So you set the player to internally decode by selecting the PCM audio out instead of having it bitstream (or sending the raw data for the receiver to decode). This is what all PS3 owners must do in order to hear the new codecs.

So you really dont need an v1.3 rated reciver these days, although you might as well for the prices.

Now on another note, wasnt the yammy 2500 an older high end model? I believe you would probably benefit yourself more by getting into the brand new RX-V1900 or RX-V3900 yamahas. You can find the 1900 for around $800 and 3900 for around $1349. Im thinking about picking up the V3900 (until the emotiva XMC-1 comes out) because of its feature set. It has a wonderful GUI with on-screen volume overlay over HDMI, It has an anchor bay video processing chip, 140x7 watts, 4 hdmi inputs and 2 simultaneous hdmi outs, Burr-Brown dac's, and of course it decodes all the newest audio formats.

Bigred really has some food for thought there!!
Newer unit is a much better idea for all the latest formats available.

I say go for the Pioneer ELite 01 or 03. These receivers are killer. For the money I find them to lead the pack. The new Onkyo receivers are also nice but you may not like there sound quality. You would have to go listen to them.

But why they are almost identical to the Pio 1018.

    Only differences are
    -Elite on the front
    -One year more warranty
    -and trigger outs.

They are much more expensive for little gain. If you go pioneer you really need to look into the SC-05, 07's. They are the ones that are feature packed.

I have the 2500 and if I were to upgrade, I would go amp/pre-amp combo. For the price of the higher end AVR's you could look at Outlaw. Aside from that, I like the Rotel AVR's I have seen.
