But the Sony DVP-NS500V is a fine sounding machine. The Absolute Sound called its CD performance on par with the original Rega Planet, and the NS500's SACD performance rank above the Planet. Not bad for an inexpensive DVD/SACD/CD player.

Sony knows how to do SACD on most of their players. I have a Sony DVP-NS775V that I bought for $50 (refurb through SonyStyle) with the intent on sending it to Matt Anker at SACDMods to upgrade. I am still amazed how well SACD sounds through this inexpensive DVD machine (redbook not so good). I will still send it on for the mods...but it sounds very good for $50.

The first Sony SACD player was the SCD-1 which retailed for $5,000. It was stereo only and working machines in good condition are still in demand. The SCD-CE595 and the SCD-C2000ES were the last SACD-CD only players made by Sony. They came out in 2004 IIRC.

These are the last audio-only SACD capable player Sony introduced; they were other SACD-capable players that included DVD playback....like the 3100ES/9100ES single-disc players.

The SCD-CE595 and the C2000ES are basically the same machine, except for the C2000ES' headphone jack with volume control, dedicated L/R analog outputs, better parts inside, better remote, and 5 year warranty.

Thank you very much. It is a fine player. I just replaced it with a Sony ES line SACD player but the NS500 will live on in another setup I have in another part of the house.

Sony recently released a new SACD player, the SCD-XA5400ES ES , for $1500..
    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665537319

It has balanced stereo only XLR outputs, and I recently bought a new pre-amp with 2 sets of XLR inputs specifically to handle both this player, and the Dac1. Once I can find it online for $1000 with no tax, and free shipping I will be buying it for the living room stereo.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

That is one of the very few SACDs that should be listened to in multi-channel SACD.

"Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield is another SACD that SHOULD be listened to in MC.

    For everything else...2 channel rules!

I think the Dark Side of the Moon is the most popular SACD to date. Its cool but for a rock mix I think Toys in the Attic was a better multi-channel mix.
I've done a bunch of SACD surround experimenting lately and my findings are that if I know Krall is singing at the piano she is playing, I want to hear her voice and the piano coming from speakers on the same side of the room. LOL.

Let's see, some of the albums I've heard are good in SACD MC are DSOTM, Tommy (The Who) and Beck - Sea Change. I'm sure there's more that would sound good , I just haven't had much chance to do any serious listening yet. Oh and I havn't found 'Sea Change' at a reasonable price yet, but after hearing the reg CD version, I can only imagine.

In DVD-A I've read that the Beatles 'Love' album is pretty good as well.

What very few may know is that the Sony Playstation 3 also does SACD playback through HDMI. I was just listening to The Allman Brothers Eat A Peach on mine and with the new Yamaha receiver it sounds fantastic. I love the multi-channel mix on it as well. Sorry Shack but I'm a huge fan of MC SACD's.

EVERY SACD has a 2 Channel mix...and that is all I really care about. My HT rig has a SACD player but almost all of my SACD listening is on my 2 Channel rig. So I guess I will continue to add to my SACD collection.

Most of the original SACD releases had ONLY a 2 Channel SACD mix (no redbook or MC). They advanced the format to MC hoping to get a broader spectrum of listeners and take the format more mainstream. I would venture to say that the majority of SACD purchasers are audiophile types that are more interested in the SQ of the recording vs the "surround sound" and the format has no real demand from the typical HT fan.

A well put together Redbook only system is enough for me. (2 channel) I had a SACD/CDP player that I traded in on a straight Redbook player and the RB only is light years ahead of the SACD/CDP.

My MC SACD player is in the HT but it does not get much use. Seems kinds gimmicky to me.

If you're into classical music, you owe yourself to check out the Sony/BMG/RCA "Living Stereo" SACD series. Some of these titles were originally recorded back in the 50s in multi-channel (left/center/right) and SACD gives these recordings an opportunity to be played back as they were recorded. On top of that, these titles are relatively inexpensive titles at about $12.00 a pop. Highly recommended!!
