I know a person, me, that has some access to CAT-5 wire, any interested parties, gimme a shout. Mohawk Non-Plenum,

    I know it is computer related but what exactly is cat-5 wire? Is that standard networking wire or the type of multipurpose home audio-video control type wire?

    Cat 5 is networking cable... basically high performance phone wire.. I have it run all over my house for my 3 networked computers for my dsl,

    Brett - LOL, yea hopefully hasn't created a monster.

    Faster is correct. Specifically, it is 4pr., pair twisted, foil shielded, telephone/data cable.

    um....what kind of Cat 5 cable is this? Is it CAT 5 UTP? I always though CAT5 was unsheilded thus the UTP designation (Unsheilded Twisted Pair).

    ANYWAY, if it's plendem grade CAT5, I'd be very interested in it. I've got a 500 ft spool of the wall grade stuff, but I've been wanting to try out the DIY CAT5 speaker wire for the longest and they specifically call out for Plendum Grade cable. I may not be at the 500 post limit, but all things aside, I only really chime in when I have something to contribute. Not some of the mindless dribble I've seen other folks post 30 hits on.
    Damn....8 lines...I've gotta put my sig on a diet now....

    If it's got teflon (aka fluorinated ethylene propylen or FEP) insulation around the individual conductors, I'm interested. If it's polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyolefin, then I'll pass as I have a reel of this already.

    Not as individual runs, but you can take the CAT 5 and do some creative braiding to get some "supposedly" great speaker runs that cost like $1000 dollar wire. See this link DIY Cat5 Speaker Cables

    The type of cabling that Tony is talking about is the type that is rated to withstand (to a degree) a fire. It's similar to the type of cabling that idealy should be used when running cables for Satellite Dishes as well. I would say that it has more of an industrial application to it than a typical home set-up, but I don't think that this site is one to preach practicality when it comes to upgraded stuff......:D

    I'm one that, when it comes to certain things, refuses to do it myself. I just bought a full set of Z2B's for my front soundstage. The surrounds are still runnin off of super-flat....

    Tony - I have some FEP, I know what it stands for ;), but this roll that I have is the thermosplastic variety, Mohawk brand.

    what ya think about the chrome tech flex?? what size is monsters 14-4 bi-wire bulk casing? what size tech flex would i need? and also what size shrink tube would i need to cover the ends of the flex. I know i could measure, but if someone knows off hand already. plus it says it stretches so i assume i can use smaller to get a nice snug fit on the wire.

    Go with the 1/2" TechFlex. They sell it by the 25' rolls. You don't want it too snug because the wire loses it's flexibility and feels like you're dealing with 1/2" solid copper wire then. As for the heatshrink, go with 1/2" as well. I chose the 3M 2:1 ratio stuff. Pick the colors to suit your fancy. If you want to have the nice color coded tips (i.e. the red and black) then go with some 1/4" product.

    My next set of runs will be NEON YELLOW :D :cool:

    That sleeving is great, I used it to cover all my computer wiring inside, looks great. I have the window on the side type case. It didnt even occur to me to use it on my audio cables....sheesh, I must be asleep :rolleyes: That's a great idea.
