Playstation 3 as Blue-Ray Player

I have some questions about the PS3 as a BD player.
1) Is the PS3 a good blue-ray player?
2) I read that the PS3 outputs video at 60 FPS (frames per second), while movies are recorded at 24 FPS. Does this make the image jittery? I have 106" screen (via Epson 1080 UB projector). Can anyone tell me their experience with this?
3) Does the PS3 handle all the new audio codecs and the new Deep Color? Particularly, does it handle Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD Master Audio, Hi-Res multichannel PCM
4) How does the PS3 compare to other blue-ray players?
My Setup
Yamaha RX V863 7.2 receiver
Epson Powerlite Home Cinema 1080 UB Projector
TC80i's (Front Right, Front Left, and Center)
RC80i's (Surrounds and Rear Surrounds)
PSW 111 Sub
Wii
HDMI 1.3a cables throughout

The PS3 is one of, if not the best Blu player out right now, for the money. As to you're questions;
#1 Yes
#2 No
#3 Yes, all hi-def audio formats. A firmware just came out that updates the PS3 with DTS-MA
#4 Well, it kicks the **** of my Samsung BD-P1000. Other then that I don't know.If...

The PS3 is an awesome blu-ray player. Not only does it have all the HD audio formats, it plays games, and you can use it as a music server.Panasonic VIERA 46" 1080p plasma

A firmware update a while back allows 1080P/24 fps on a 24 fps monitor. Very few current monitors output 24 fps and not all bluray disks have 24 option. I use my PS3 for movies and it is awesome. Upscaling is superb too. Even divX looks near high def on this player. Outstanding in every way.SDA-1C (full mods)

Yep, Sony had their stuff together with the PS3 as far as BluRay goes.

Only real drawbacks to the ps3 are that you will need 3rd party workarounds for IR universal remotes and no multichannel analog outs. You must use hdmi to enable all the lossless audio options. Otherwise, the ps3 meets or exceeds all other currently available players out there featurewise.

Fully agree. I'm not cool with the Ir issue. I mean it's fine to use the factory control but I would rather use my universal remote. After market Ir work arounds only control functions not turn on or off. That sucks and I hope Sony releases one like what they had for the Ps2 but better. The analog out also sucks for people like me who don't have a HDMI preamp yet. None on the market right not that I like. I have to use Optical so I don't get to hear the new audio formats. But it sounds fantastic anyway. I'm so impressed with its audio quality. As good or better then my Reference DVD player. Remember that my preamp is decoding the audio so it can only be as good as it can do.(Rotel rsp1068).
As far as using a 100 inch or larger screen, I can confirm that it works perfectly. I have Installed a few Ps3's on 110, 120 and 150 inch screens with stellar results.
In my opnion there is no better blu ray player on the market. It's also the fastest loading out of all blu ray players.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
I don't know if it's such a good idea to watch movies on your PS. I watched movies on my PS2 all the time and it got to the point where it wouldn't work anymore. It was in a well ventilated area and never got banged around or even moved. It was one of the little ones though. Maybe I just a bad one, possibly.

I just used my PS3 last night for the first time. It makes a really nice BR player. It just runs REALLY hot and the fans are a bit noisy but not too loud to notice during the movie.Sharp Elite 70

So I was impressed with how the PS3 does as a BR player myself...well my 40GB PS3 is quiet as can be, i dont ever hear the fans...anyway, best BR player right now is the PS3...Once you pop Cars in, yes even if you are not a fan of PIXAR, the sound of the movie is just amazing and is what i would consider a nice test movie to really test your PS3 as a BR player..anyway, enjoy it..i know I am

Now that the PS3 does DTS-MA internally it is a great buy so I got one. My 40GB has fans that are audible so I'm not sure if it is damaged, I have very good hearing though and some noises bother me that my wife doesn't even worry about. Overall they are fairly quiet but I can't say I don't ever hear them.TV Samsung 61" 1080P DLP LED

I think I have a newer version of 40G. I can't hear the fan noise at all.
I heard that newer version has smaller chip which runs cooler and quieter.. -

Hmm, I just got mine from Buy.com but wonder if I should return it. Maybe it was sitting around for a while, I'll check for a production date.
Checked the production date Dec 2007, was the fix after this? I just got it last week....TV Samsung 61" 1080P DLP LED

Thanks for the reply everyone.
I will get the PS3. After doing much research, I think it is one of the cheapest and best BD players out there - and you could play games on it. -

Mine has the same production date (Dec 2007). I am not sure (but I guess) if it has a smaller chip, but it runs quiet and cool in 3 hours.

Nice info on the size of the chip ... I didnt know that.
Im holding out for th 80 gig re-release bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Rumble controller. Should be here in June ... my Sony Xbr 4 has been aching for hi def movies for sometime now!

Multi-channel analog outputs on a gaming console? I don't believe that's a drawback at all.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
