Need some opinions

Hi guys. I'm trying to help out my supervisor. He needs to update his receiver & has asked me for an opinion.

He is looking at a Pioneer Elite VSX-91THX http://www.electronicexpress.com/product?prod_id=12031

It looks good to me. He wants to make sure that he can utilize it to get all the benefits out of his HD tv & cable box & whatnot.

He is also wondering what the benefit is of running the video through the receiver & how it would work?

What would be the simplist & most effective way of getting the best picture out of his setup.

Are there any problems with this machine & what other receivers in this class would you recommend?

    Should work just fine. Plenty of component/hdmi inputs to work with.

    The benefits of using the AVR as a video switcher is that you don't have to change the input on the TV, which can make using multiple devices easier. Without it, you'd have each device hooked directly to the TV and you'd have to change the TV's input to the one associated with the device you're currently using.

    If you have a good universal remote it could do that for you, and some of the benefit of using the AVR as a switcher goes away. But I still think it's a nice convenience that makes the system easier to use.

    go with the newer 92 model, the 91 had some issues with LFE, that were fixed in the 92 model.

    He has some Cambridge Soundworks bookshelf system/w sub. He doesn't know the model numbers.

    Sounds like he's more interested in the video. That looks good.

    The best is to go direct into the tv, you don't have the receiver in the chain.

    I used to run all my sources through a Sherwood Newcastle P965 pre/pro and now that I have sold it my picture is much more grainier. Granted I have a cheap TV.

    To me, picture quality doesn't suffer at all by going through my AVR. Maybe it makes a difference for others. To me audio quality is far more important, so maybe that's part of it -- maybe I'm just not as picky about video. But HD looks amazing, as does SD DVD playback.
