I am an old **** whose last video game was a pong. Still, I like what I hear about the PS3 for my BR desires. A couple questions:
1. Will it stream wireless from my wireless internet router? Is this just for BR related content or general www surfing?
2. Does the optional wireless remote work like a traditional remote? whatever that means.
3. If I only use the digital optical output for audio, will I get improved sound out of the BR discs?
4. Can I connect this to my PC and transfer all of my music to the PS3's hard drive?
Sorry for all the questions...but it is hard to sort out specific answers from all the info out there. Thanks very much.

It will stream wirelessly just fine from your PC
The remote is a Bluetooth remote, not IR...so I don't think it will work like a regular remote (like universal or anything)
Optical will get you DTS and Dolby up to 5.1...which is pretty decent sounding. In order to get anything WAY better, you have to have HDMI. And even then, PS3 is not capable of handling DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD sound.
And yes, you can transfer all your songs and such from your hard drive. Or you can just put a CD into the PS3 and copy it to the hard drive that way (I think)"Dr Dunn admitted that his research could also be interpreted as evidence that women are shallower than men. 1. Yes, the PS3 has wifi built in. You can stream video/music from your pc to your ps3. It has an internet browser. Not as robust as IE or Firefox, but a browser non the less.
2. The Blu-Ray remote that sony makes for the ps3 works with the ps3 by blue tooth. Not IR.
3. Yes, you will get better sound via optical as apposed to RCA. You will, however, not get uncompressed PCM audio. You can only get that with HDMI.
4. See answer number 1. You can transfer your media files to your ps3 via wifi. The ps3 uses DLNA (or somthing like that) to communicate with your PC. This means you will need to have some type of software on your PC that has this codec built in. There are a number of software applications that have this. Most are free. I use windows media player 4. You do not need to configure WMP4 nor does it need to be running. It simply just needs to be installed on your PC. -

Wow...consistent answers!! Thanks. Too many options with too many variations right now. It's hard for a traditional audio guy to think about a game player as a key audio-video component. But then I did throw out my Smith-Carolla.

This is false. The ps3 internally decodes TrueHD just like dedicated players, into PCM that can then be transferred over HDMI to the receiver/pre/pro. You can listen to it in all its high bit rate glory. It has long been rumored that internal decoding of DTS-HD MA could come via firmware update. But we haven't seen it yet. Uncompressed LPCM, the third lossless format is also available. At present, those two formats the ps3 can handle make up the vast majority of lossless blu-ray releases on the format. Just Fox and New Line seem to be the main studios that prefer DTS-HD MA.
As far as moving things to the HDD from a PC, I would download the free fileserver available here:

Then you can download even large files very easily from a PC over any internet connection, including wireless.
And if you don't like to have a PC on everytime you want to listen to your music, just get a cheap generic laptop HDD and with a screw driver and 5 min (instructions are in the ps3 manual), you can have hundreds of GB to just copy over your collection and serve the files from the ps3 directly to your equipment.

Hey this sounds like exactly what I have been looking for and I have no interest in video games!
One other question about the wifi, since I am kind of hyper active and seldom sit around I would like to stream music via wifi from my pda. That way I could carry it around the house in my pocket and control play list and volume. I also plan on getting speakers for outside and setting them up zone two. I know I couldn't control the sound of these independantly via wireless but is it reasonable to expect that the wireless would work with the ps3 and my pda in this situation? Or am I expecting to much? The other thing I just saw was a denon reciever with usb port and wireless and 140 wpc, I might start another thread to see peoples opinion on a setup like that. -
One more thing, concerning optical, since the blu-ray bitrate that standard DD and DTS tracks are played back at is twice that of most DVDs, you will notice improvement in sound quality even over optical when playing blu-rays vs. standard dvds.

Another option you might want to look into is the Sony Playstation Portable. It is supposed to be able to remotely turn on the ps3 and play media files stored on it from any wifi hotspot even over the internet. But I really don't know much about this option as I've never done anything with a PSP. -

I have read so many of these threads, and I still am a tad confused about the new DD/DTS formats. If the player (PS3 or other) has internal decoding, do you connect to your receiver/pro with multiple RCA inputs? My Ref 20 does not have HDMI or 5 channel input. -

I don't havd a wireless network, just wireless Internet. It sounds like the PS3 will with its internal wifi connect to my wireless and it has some sort of browser that will let me connect to music sites? -

If you want to listen to TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, or uncompressed LPCM in their full 'lossless' presentation and you don't have HDMI, then yes, you need to hook up with analog RCA inputs. The ps3 does not have multichannel analog outs, so you'll need either another player or at some point upgrade to an hdmi capable receiver/pre.
All blu-rays have access to DD or the core DTS track of DTS-HD MA tracks over optical. The DD is at 640kbps and the DTS core is at 1.5mbps. These are twice the normal bitrates normally found on DVDs. So they sound very good over optical even if you can't access the 'lossless' tracks. -

Not sure what you mean by wireless Internet. Most high speed connections have some sort of cable modem, etc. that connects to a router (people usually use a wireless one) that forms their home network. If you are able to connect laptops, desktops, or a game console to the internet wirelessly, then that usually means you have a wireless router in the loop and you have home networking capabilities.
Yes, the ps3 is very happy connecting to generic wireless or wired network connections. And yes, the ps3 does have a basic web browser that you can use to surf the internet. Although it's easier with a keyboard and mouse (standard bluetooth or usb) than with the game controller. In addition, people have media files (music/movies) that they have stored on their PC and we've been discussing that you can stream them to the ps3 or just get a large hard drive and copy the files over so you don't have to have the PC on at the same time. Another thread also talked about the ability to rip CDs to the ps3, store them on the HDD, and enjoy higher quality than say an mp3 file on the PC. These are all options worth exploring if you like to listen to music and want the ps3 to serve as a media hub. -

You can get your Harmony or whatever Universal remote to work with the PS3 including on/off as well..
Please direct me to the information to do this, turn the PS3 on/off with anything other than a bluetooth controller.
One of the reasons I am waiting to upgrade my universal remote is because of the lack of any remotes that can actually turn the PS3on/off. -

OK, I hve 2 Harmony remotes, but I still get off the couch and physcally turn my amp on and off. I know I could get a 12v trigger, but it just feels so manly to hit the switch and hear the electricity begin to crackle.

I do exaclty that. I have noticed a increase in sound quality with Blu ray movies over Standard dvd using Optical. it's not True HD but it's Plus I believe. You will be very happy using your exsisting pre or receiver without HDMI with audio. It will be the best IT can be. Whats even cooler is when you do upgrade to a HDMI receiver, you will have even more sonic abilities. I'm waiting to upgrade my preamp, I almost jumped into a Pioneer Elite vsx94txh because I didn't want to wait for eveyone else to upgrade there preamps. I still might do it but B&K is releasing a new preamp in May, if I can hold out that long( I'm killing it to upgrade).
Overall the Ps3 is the very best Blu player out there. It also is so much more. There is no reason to not buy one. NONEDan
