George,

I'm betting you have (at least) one, but not NIB.

What's the over/under on this puppy, $1000?

I don't know.....something strikes me as odd about this.

    New In Box?

The box hasn't been opened since 1970?

How do they know the box has never been opened?

Can't a box be opened and then resealed with tape?

What assurances do I have that the tape on the box is the original tape from the manufacturer?

How do they know there is really a turntable in that box?

    Are they the original owner?

Only the original owner knows for sure.

The box could have been opened 33 years ago and used to store 8 track tapes.

    Never been openned since 1970?

How and where did he get those brochure? Maybe inside
    that box.

The paper tapes that wrap around that box is not
original. Most manufacturer they are using staples and
    not tapes?

har, the brochure is just that an AR sales brochure. I remember seeing these. It's very collectable in its own right. I may be wrong, but I don't think AR put them in with their TT's.

The box tape looks old, whether original or not??? Use of tape w/ company logo was rare back them, more common now for tamper evidence. B&K I just bought used box tape. No staples.

I sent the questions off. The seller has great feedback. Let's see what he has to say.

The price of that table is going to go through the roof. Yes, I HAD one. My first turntable. That is the AR-XA in the ads, but I don't see that printed on the box. No arm lifter, and no auto shut-off at end of album. Truly the first "floating suspension" table. If you took it outside and put it on the sidewalk, you could beat on the top of the base with something while it was playing an album, and the needle would not so much as flutter. As long as it was on something stable. Incredibly low rumble figures for that day due to the belt drive. There is STILL an absolute cult following for that table, as the ebay bids will bear out.

There was an earlier model called "The AR Turntable", but it wasn't from the 70's, but the 60's. In fact, the XA was available in the late 60's.

Whatever the case, new or not, unopened or not, that table's going to need a new belt!

Actually TOUR2MA, I had two of those tables (the XA).

That company, was , and still is, responsible for bringing good sound into more homes than any other manufacturer. At one point, with plenty of competition from other excellent manufacturer's, AR had a 30% share of the speaker market. Now Dr. Bose sells a lot of speakers (none of them worth listening to of course), but he WISHES he had 30%.

Jstas, don't ever lump Cambridge Soundworks in the same category with Blose. That, is a sacriledge. To expand on a previous statement, Henry Kloss, co-founder of AR, and then KLH, founder of Advent, and founder of Cambridge Soundworks, is responsible for bringing good sound into more homes, than any other person in history. Period. To lump him with you know who, is kind of in bad form.

    But you still da man.

Tears welling............amen; well put George. The late 70's were a literal revolution in the sound industry - these are landmark and milestone companies and products. Henry Kloss is a giant in the audio industry - a legend.

OK, Just received the reply from the seller.
    What I asked:
Forgive me if you've already been asked these a dozen times, but:
    - How do you know the box has never been opened?
    - Are you sure there is really an AR turntable in that box? If its been in the hiding in a back corner of the dealer you show in one picture, the box could have been opened 33 years ago and used to store 8 track tapes.
    - Is the above close to how you came by this potential rarity?

I'm intrigued to say the least... If I won it, I'd be torn between opening and using it and keeping it as an investment...
.. and BTW VERY nice ad... loved the old AR literature...
I guess it's about 30 years too late to offer you the full MSRP to call off the auction.
    and the reply:
yes the msrp is a little low
actually the store owner is still very much alive and has not lost all of his crackers yet - so suffice to say he knows what he has
if it were me - I wouldn't open it - but that's just me
    happy bidding!
So yup it's the original owner...

Would have sworn you'd still have one George. I never did, but a college roomie did. Like so many of Henry's designs, it was so simple...

For those who don't know, the only "control" was the on-off switch, want to change speeds - pull the platter and change pullies, no anti-skate or hydraulic lift for that beautifully curved Al tone arm... and that suspension... well George covered that.

Well Gents... it's genuine and still sitting there at the bargain price of $405... this will be fun to watch...

    George,
Check out the last picture in the post, the close up of the box:
    "Serial Number: XA287204".

Also looks like there might be a date below the "Ship to" address. Looks like 11/29/76. Is that date right for the XA? Didn't AR move to an "XT" or something in the late 70's?

Cool table, can't wait to see what someone is willing to pay. I love the 'Butterfinger' feature, where the tonearm floats down if dropped. Who here could have used THAT feature a time or two, I know I could have.

Fwiw, actually the FIRST 'floating' design was the HH Scott 710 circa 1955-60. $102 without tonearm and cartridge.

Fully floating suspension and tonearm mount. The motor was isolated from the base and the tonearm mount. The platter assembly was even isolated from the motor.

Henry Kloss did not design the XA turntable. His partner and co-founder at AR did, Edgar Villchur. An absolute genius. He was the real force behind many of the AR landmark products. He was good at what he did, because he had no real interest in audio as a hobby. He liked challenges, and came up with unique solutions to long standing problems (that others usually failed miserably at). Once he sold AR (Kloss had left for KLH) and made millions on that sale, he never had anything to do with another audio product (unless you consider designing hearing aids audio).

I had the TREMENDOUS fortune and honor to meet both of them , Kloss and Villchur, at the 40th anniversary party celebrating the 1954 founding of AR. It was held at Grand Central Station in New York, and put together by Ken Kantor, who knows a thing or two about speaker design himself. Very fortunate to obtain a copy of Villchur's book "Hi-Fi Reproduction" and I got it signed by both Kloss and Villchur at that gala affair. There is a small possibility that there will be a 50th anniversay gala in 2004 . Naturally Kloss won't be there, but Roy Allison, one of the great AR designers, and ANOTHER guy who knows a thing or two about speakers, just might be.

The 40th gala, was also a launching pad for the AR 303, 302 and 338 (Ken Kantor designs). They were all modeled after classic AR speakers. The 303 being a new AR-3a, and the 302 being a new AR-5 which was Roy Allison's baby. I had a pair of 5's, and now have a pair of those 302's in cherry. They're gorgeous, sound fantastic, and were only played once and then I sealed them back up in their boxes. $200 delivered to my house from accessories4less.com, and NO they are not two lefts, or two rights. I recommended so many people to that company, they provided me with a bonus for my efforts.

Ken Kantor is a great guy, another genius, and truly witty. He designed the speakers I mentioned, as well as the AR MGC-1 (Magic-1) in the 80's, AND all those great NHT jobs. He mentioned that he just missed being in on my AR-9's. That was the moment (recently I might add) when he stated that my AR-9's set the standard for the day, 1978 or so, AND have the best low end he's ever heard, TO THIS DAY!

I also met a man at the gala named Tom Tyson. A real gentleman, he has the most extensive collection of AR products and memorabilia that I've ever seen, to include the old cutaway, AR-3a, which was on display there, pumping away to a 5Hz signal!!!! I also believe it is his AR-3a's that are on display at the Smithsonian. Meeting him, Ken Kantor, Villchur, Kloss, Julian Hirsch, David Hafler, was like walking through a **** dream for 3 hours. They even fed us (took my old bud from Brooklyn, Ray Nader)!!

A real highlight, was presented by Villchur. We were standing around talking, and a gentleman that wasn't aware that Villchur had nothing to do with audio after he sold AR in the early 70's asked him "Edgar, how do you think the 303 compares to the 3a?" To which Edgar replied, "See that guy over there? (pointing to a uniformed security guard) Go ask him, cause he knows a lot more about it than I do!" Also, my friend Ray, lamented to Kloss that HE was the reason Ray has so many speakers hanging around the house (not QUITE as many as moi of course). To which Henry replied, "At least I made them small!"

Like walking through a dream, I still get the opportunity to bounce questions off Ken Kantor, and Tom Tyson. If corporate people don't do anything for the 50th anniversary, we all may get together somewhere and do it ourselves.

I didn't read the threads all the way through, so here's more:

The tone arm on the AR-XA didn't float at all. It fell like a rock if you dropped it, as it wasn't damped by an arm lifter.

The mid 70's model was the XB, NOT the XA. The XA might have been manufactured up to about 74-75. Then there was an XA-91, and after that the XB. I can't remember ALL this ****. I'm 50. Every day I have to un-remember some stuff, just to be able to remember not to piss or **** myself.

I'm not familiar with a floating suspension Scott table. Bet he sold at least 8 of them, for what it's worth.

Beating the XA on the sidewalk was an actual demonstration used by AR, WHEN THEY HAD A LISTENING ROOM AT GRAND CENTRAL STATION. Not my fault most guys here aren't old enough to remember it. Kloss's idea I believe to have that room there, as so many thousand people passed through each day (outthinking Dr. Bose from a marketing standpoint!). You couldn't buy anything at the demo room, but many AR dealers were a a couple of blocks away, just in case you liked what you heard.

 I know the feeling, but there’s that delight of remembering something that you haven’t thought of in decades to make up for it. I just may need to borrow that quote for a while (no offense, F1). ;)

Great read George, especially for this 50-year old pair of eyes. I’m thinking you should be called George “the storyteller” Grand.

Vilchur’s name rang a bell, but I never would have placed him properly. Ditto for Kantor. But then Allison… he went on to found Allison Acoustics did he not?

Yes, Roy Allison founded Allison Acoustics (IC-20's are incredible speakers), and then RA Labs (which I visited in 1995 up in Mass.).
I bought a pair of his Mini-References, which at the time, were about as much performance as you were going to squeeze out of a 6" two-way. He is still alive, and lending a new company his expertise. Roy Allison was responsible for the AR-5.

It's still sitting there with just over 2 days to go at $405. I still think it's going to go crazy in the last 1/2 hour and totally berserk in the last minute... I know I'll be watching. (Watching Doc, not bidding… unless…) ;)

George, three questions and a request…
With which company is Roy Allison working?
I must confess I completely missed RA Labs during my audio hiatus. Were they speakers only, or full line?
Any other reference books you'd recommend in addition to Good Sound by Dearborn? It appears to be out of print (according to Amazon), but they list and have The Complete Guide to High-End Audio by Robert Harley.

Last the bi-amp/bi-wire thread has taken a turn to discussing external crossovers. If you have time to contribute, I think it’d help.

    1. Allison Acoustics Inc. I believe is the new company.

    2. Harley's book is an acceptable piece of reading, but bear in mind, he was a Stereophile writer for a long while. He HATED the beloved Polk's.

    3. Diminishing returns with external crossovers, add the capability to introduce problems (JUST LIKE ADDING SUBWOOFERS!). Just bi-amp if you have the capability. I don't subscribe to bi-wiring, and am not going to get a headache discussing it.

    ... any other recommended readings?

    3. Fair enough, I and others just don't appear to "get" bi-amping, even if we (I) endorse its use. I'll search for an old thread that may get into the tech talk behind it.

Never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lay down.

Never bi-wire when you can bi-amp, never bi-amp when you can bridge mono.

Allison's are a rare find, but worth it from what I 'hear'. I'd put em' on par with other rare finds like Norman Laboratories, some older Sound Dynamics, some ADS.

I'd spend $1,025 on a turntable, if Jenny McCarthy was sitting on it. No new tables here. You had to know that table was going to go for more than a "Grand".
