    Scott,
It's cool... you’re on my “Buddy List”. If you would, please pencil me in on that sarcastic f**ker list with about four stars. ;)

    Scott,

Thanks for trying to keep me in the loop.

I went ahead and bought a 400i to go up front to repalce my CS-245, which I will then use as my center rear speaker. It should all go nicely with the rest of my set-up. RT-55's in front, RT-35's in rear and a JBL sub.

    Unfortunatly, I currently have a Pioneer VSX-D557 which is a really great receiver(anyone interested?):D
, but alas, only a 5.1. So I'm going to have to buy a new 6.1 Any suggestions for a descent 6.1 receiver in the $500-$700 range?

Also, I notice that you use a two channel amp to go along with your receiver. What purpose does that provide?

    Again, thanks for your help.

He said he used that to power his center on steroids, the extra 2 bookshelfs, but i guess i shoulda let him answer for him self..

How do you plan to do 6.1 with a 5.1 receiver?? Did you buy Har's 400i?? it looked like a nice one with the box, I made a shelf for my lonely rti28 rear center, looks so small now..lol

anyways, onkyo has some nice receivers for the money, check out circuit city or e-bay.. or pioneers elite line has a cheaper model around your price range i think, maybe vsx 41 or lower

    Yep, I bought Har's 400i.
I was looking at the Pioneer Elite VSX-41, that Reliable Home Theater sells for $429 or the VSX-43TX which they have for $678.

There are many good 6.1 recievers on the market now. One of the most popular is the Onkyo tx-sr600 for the money.
brentski, very nice setup - let us know how it all comes together. A new 6.1 reciever will really make a difference - I would recommend with your speakers you get at least 100 watts a channel unit.

The 600 is 80 watts per ch.

Type of Receiver: Home Theater Receiver
    Watts Center: 80 W
Watts Per Channel (Main): 80 W
Watts Per Channel (Rear): 80 W

The TX-SR600 6-channel A/V Receiver adds rear-center surround capability with a sixth amplifier channel, and Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES decoding. The unit also features sophisticated HDTV capable 50 MHz component video switching, improved digital processing for the left and right speaker channels, an on-screen display, and improved bass management for digital signals.

The TX-SR700 (about $150 more) has 100 watts per ch. Does it really make that much difference and would I really be able to tell difference between the 80 watt compared to the 100 watt model?
    Thanks

I would say no, you have to double wattage to truely hear a difference, maybe 80 to 150-200 might yield a difference but not 80-100.... I'f its 100 cheaper get the 600, unless it has more options you may want.. compare the 2 units specs and listen to them.. I doubt listening to each will sound any different

My receiver has a pre-out for the rear center. I'll be connecting a Y splitter to it and running two RCA cables to my Harman Kardon h/k 870 2 channel amp at 100 WPC. From there, I'll power TWO CS245i (one on each side of the fireplace) as my rear surrounds. It won't be true 7.1, but it should give me a large rear sound stage in 6.1.

Tend to agree with Faster. Check out your receiver’s headroom, if it has 1.5 db or so, it can deliver 112 w or so of short duration power. But your power requirement is going to come down to: how large of a room your HT rig is trying to fill, speaker sensitivity and impedance, how much of low end you’re steering to subwoofer, etc. So many factors… so little time…

Easiest thing to do? Set up what you have and measure the SPH (smiles per hour)… :) . Not high enough? Consider separates as you move forward… so many more upgrade options…

    Not sure what "headroom" means.

I understand most of your other comments except for "consider separates".

All my components are separates. Please explain

Separates means the you have a pre-amp and 1 or more amps.
Most recievers on the market are "intergrated". Pre-amp and amp are all in one unit.
Except "now adays" near top of the line and flagship recievers have just as much if not MORE options than a common pre-amp does. The "upgrade not an option" does not fly with me anymore.
Tons of features and pre-out galore.

    All yap - no $.
I hate when people are like: I am going to buy a reciever this week should it be reciever A or reciever B? After a long week of talking and 35 threads later. The guy is like "ohhhh it cost money". I forgot I don't have any. HELLO!!!!! Mc Fly!!!!!

Yup i hear ya, Well i talked about and got my RTI28 rear center, That 55 would make a nice center channel for someone... I build computers on the side and i don't know how many people waste my time saying get me the prices for a new tower and then after days of research they never get back with me, or the big " I don't know what i'm gonna do yet" Its like thank you very much for wasting my time, I was going to get a new receiver until i realized the one i had had everything and then some of the ones i was looking at and could afford.. I used what money i did have saved for other more important things

I like it alot, i had 6.1 around 6 months ago but it was a infinity center and i sold it off with the idea of getting a polk, well Christmas came and so did my extra money, Well i sold my amp and had some extra money to get the 28 and it works great. I would like a csi30 back here i'f they werent so big and kinda pricey just for a rear center.. I would actually just soon get a cheap onkyo 282 amp like i had before (stupid to have gotten rid of it) and run 7.1 through my pre-outs..

Sounds good faster - but I just bought that Onkyo M282 and i would not consider it cheap. Solid build -23 pounds - very attractive - clean power - good options and very hard to get under $300 bones. Very nice little unit.

well cheap i guess i meant compared to a multi channel amp to power all 7 channels, all i need is a 2 channel amp for my receiver to get all 7.1 channels.. I owned one almost a year ago, got it from a shop here for $239.00 and then upgraded to the Integra and didn't need it at the time... I think it sold for about $275.00 or 250.00 can't remember.. I wish i still had it though very nice looking amp and sleek.. heavy bugger, 12 volt trigger and audio activated, I want one again and then it will be most likely another set of 28's or 38's and the 28's will become rear centers
