One of the top 5 questions on this forum - right now is what can I use for my 6th channel speaker? Funny but about a year people were scared of 6.1
Anyway I suggest using a center channel - what is the rest of your speaker layout?

I have sold about 5 people on the forum on a center channel for a 6th channel. It makes more sence. It mimics the fronstage and also has a wider disposition - filling more sound lateraly. Direct but more spread out sound because actual layout of the speaker.

    Knowledge is power my friend.
don't let people change your mind, you just might find that elusive speaker
Doesn't mean it is the best for the application though.

useing a center as a rear center is no new idea, i myself used a infinity center as my rear center after i upgraded my infinity's to all polks and i had the center left, I got the rti28 on the cheap so i jumped on it, Its not the be all end all but it works, i'f he wants a matching speaker like i did so be it, I just said don't let people change your mind about it because its harder to find, The easiest way is of course get a center, unless you don't want a huge center behind you or dangleing behind your head or don't really have the room.. Thats all i didn't mean to coherse him away from your new idea..

Its also depends soley on the roomsize, Mine is a mere 10x10 and a center speaker takes up space, a bookshelf speaker does not, put it into a 15'x24' room, ok a mere rti28 or 35 won't fit the bill, we are now talking apples to oranges right??
Remember this is coming from a person i am guessing has alarge room with a "center on steroids" where which a mere bookshelf wouldn't work as a rear center.. Lets see what size the room is and how much space he needs to cover with this speaker???

10x10 ouch!!!!!!!! If someone has a room like that - i suggest a boombox. A square room is worst possiable acoustics and way too small. It was a suggestion for the "normal" hometheater room.
And like a said before the average HT person(s) are just now realizing the benifits of 6/7.1 HT. Just year ago on the forum nobody was even taking it to heart. They were afraid it would never stop like 16.1.

Yeah.. 16.1 ... count me in...

Scott, seriously, if I am following you, you're feeding your front center out to your rear center as well. Yes?

What's the signal setting for your single rear vs. your front trio? or are you just Y-ing out the one center and letting your trio out muscle the one rear?

Edit - Since you've been down this road before, please feel free to just steer me to the appropriate thread...

    Scottvamp,
my current layout is a CS-245 center,RT-55's front,RT-35's rear and a JBL sub. I've pretty much been talked into getting a 400 for my center which would free up my 245 but I'm open to suggetions.I was told by a polk rep that another 35 would fit the bill the best.
    Thanks,brentski

I just purchased a pair of RT7s from eBay for $150 plus shipping. Put the one as my RC along w/ Monitor 10s, CS400, FX500s.

Not only does this complete the effect, the transitions are damned good.

Sorry though, I saving the other RT7 so my kid can have a speaker pair when she goes off to college in a couple years.

My point is though, pairs of speakers aren't all that expensive. You could always buy a pair off eBay and sell the spare.

Well scott , I actually was guessing on the room size, Its not actually a Home theater... Just a living room for now.. I measured the room and strangly enough its 12 foot front to back, and i know i read the measure right it is 11foot 4 inches, Don't ask me its an old house, So it's not 10x10, I know this aint much bigger but come'on a boombox i kinda take offense to that,:)

We plan to either buy a new house, or add on to this one for a dedicated HT room, Non the less just use the center as a rear so this discussion doesn't go on forever :)
scotts right use the center and try and find a 400 center for the front.

and what does everyone consider a " NORMAL " HT room, didn't know thier were specs for such

Also the idea of hooking up more then one speaker or center is very easy depending on what gear you have, i'f you have a receiver like mine and others you can use the internal amp for the center as normal and hook an external amp off the pre-outs for the center, its only one output you say?? for the center pre-out..
then you buy a Y splitter that has 1 male to 2 female jacks, hook a stereo RCA jack set to the 2 females and send that to the 2 channel amp which can power 2 more speakers or in this case bookshelfs as centers... hence the 3 speaker center channel..

Thanks for explaining my center speaker setup - I have no clue why? And actually many recievers - when preout is in use the original channel will not work any longer. Well now that the original poster was scared off!!!!

I prepared myself about 2 years ago for the inevitable 6.1 surround to come down the road.

I currently have 5.1 with the SRS 2.3's as mains, CS400 for center and FX500's for rears. 2 years ago I bought a used CS400 and stored it away (and it still is). I wanted my center, surrounds and rear center to all match exactely for when I do go to 6.1.

    John
    No excuses!

Tour2ma, Sorry I totally missed the question. I am flatered you pay so close attention to my HT.
Actually in a 6 channel setup. You will have 3 speakers making the "frontstage" and 3 speakers in the "backstage". I that aspect way they act independently from one another. For example - you can get away with all rt series upfront and rti's in the rear.
Now even though I explain that the front and rear center mimicing each other that does not mean they are putting out equal sound. What I mean by mimicing is that the placement is all portion to each other - giving you a more even spread of sound.
The signal/sound in a DVD is going to be extremely different from each other on the front center and rear. Just by the content of how a DVD is encoded the front center will seem to over power the rear.
I believe you are really wanting to know what is the spl diffence between the two. Like I said earlier - in order to take full advantage of my center I run it about 2db hot. As I expalined it does not affect DVD movies that much and IMO improves the fronstage. I do listen to DVD-A in DD and DTS and I still find the my setup to be very seemless. I would have rathered a cs400 in the rear though as they go a little deeper on the bass side. But at the time it was not practical for me.

I posted your "center setup" because someone was asking about how it was hooked up, earlier in this thread unless i misread and it was in another, I don't have a 10x10 room, i corrected that.. and i originally added to this thread saying don't lose hope for that single bookshelf if thats what he wanted.
So i'f you think you need to piss in my chereo's because you "think" i'm bashing your idea for your center or rear center i am not. So lay the eff off ok, you seem to be the one who ran off the original poster by starting **** with me about what i posted. Christ can't we all add input without someone starting **** and getting all pissey??????

I am not all that new here and seems i can be let into the club by now and certain people stop giving me ****!!!! I'm not mantis and will not stand around to be bashed for everything i write ok, enough... i won't answer on posts when someone thinks they have the END ALL ANSWER agreed!!!

    Scott,

Makes us even, 'cause 'til just now I missed the answer.

Forgive me, but I am still unclear on the signal source to the center rear amp. Is it a unique, decoded output from your SS processor? Or is it the same as the signal going to your front center? Or is it "other"?

As for "missing" stuff... seems to me that the e-mail notices for subscribed threads don't seem to be as reliable lately as they have been in the past.

As for my attention to your HT, well, Sid was not comfortable with the attention I was giving him, so I had to move on... No, seriously you're clearly an experimenter and eager to share your learning without shoving it down anyone's throat, not to mention it's an impressive rig. (Don’t see one in your eq. list, but do you use a line doubler? Does your Sanyo have one built in?)

As for Arby’s vs. Hooters… I dine at neither.

    Faster,
I don’t think there is a normal, or standard, HT room. There are generally accepted guidelines. The guidelines I know are that you want to avoid similar dimensions, e.g., 10 x 10 x10, and parallel surfaces. So it’s good that your room is more like 10 x 12 x 8(?). Like you I’m stuck with what I have, for now. But what I have is considerably bigger, ~ 25 x 18 x 8.5 (mains and monitor are on the long wall).

All I took Scott’s “boombox” gig to mean was that yours is a small room and doesn’t need much power to fill it. Just an objective read from an uninvolved party. (I was considerably less objective when he hosed me in a reply to my RnR Reminiscing proposal post.) But you guys have already appeared to make nice, so I’ll just LSDL.

I can practically hear the dull thud of Brent banging his head on his CRT when he reads all this…

It’s cool, Brent… just keepin’ the tread alive for ya newbie… so just fasten the ol’ seat belt, cinch it up extra tight and enjoy the ride… your RT-35 is right around the next corner…

Many of the newer recievers have pre-outs for every speaker. That is how I was able to add speakers to my center. As for as the rear center my reciever is a 6 channel. 100 watts to each.
(Don’t see one in your eq. list, but do you use a line doubler? Does your Sanyo have one built in?)
Thanks for the nice words about my HT. I take alot of pride in it.
My Sanyo DOES have a built in line doubler but it only works for component and up signals. I would need an external doubler to make my satilite look better. This is the case with almost all HD projectors. Also I have one the best progressive scan DVD players on the market -Denon DVD2800. Even though it is a little out of date now.
All I took Scott’s “boombox” gig to mean was that yours is a small room and doesn’t need much power to fill it.
Ya, there are $500/1000 boomboxes on the market now that give larger plug and go systems a run for the money.
(I was considerably less objective when he hosed me in a reply to my RnR Reminiscing proposal post.)
Not sure what your talking about but I did mean anything personal. I am just a sarcastic f**ker sometimes.:D
