Our neighbor across the street started to clean up a hedgerow, but his toe developed something, and he had to have surgery a couple of weeks ago. He barely got started.
Well, my wife loves yard work to keep active, so she said she would help them out.

We edged the driveway on Sat. too.
We've been lucky to have had some storms drop around 4" every other week or longer.
I watered once in between them, though. The Crape Myrtles are blooming great. The Lawn is LUSH and thriving now. Our water bill should be lower.

I saw one in my lawn a couple of weeks ago while mowing. I keep the St. Augustine level at 4" to 4.5", so this glass lizard has a jungle to slither through.
Scared me for a second! I know what they are, so I instantly relaxed and kept mowing. The one I saw wasn't that long, though. Maybe a foot.
Haven't seen it since.

First time I really noticed someone's full thick St. Augustine lawn was just north of San Antonio around 1990. I was talking to the owner and my friend that lived across the street from him. We were all standing in the neighbor's driveway. The owner, an older man had just finished mowing. He was very proud of his lawn. I made a remark, "proud of what, where I live we'd call that stuff crabgrass and spray Roundup on all of it." He seemed to think I was not a nice person, he was actually offended.
My friend told me he's quite particular about his lawn. My friend a Nebraska transplant to the area, said
he thought the same thing the first time he saw St. Augustine grass. Not the same as fine Kentucky Blue, or a fine
RTF fescue. That St. Augustine lawn was thick and weed free, thick like Zoysia grass.

Many years ago, I took a vacation. I don't know what happened, but I felt the lawn back home should get a mowing. So I called a neighbor and asked if he could ride over with his riding mower (a BIG one) and trim my lawn a bit. He said sure, no problem.
I got home he had SCALPED it to the ground!
That's how he does his 2 lawns across the street. I had forgotten about that.
Well, it took years for the lawn to recover from that. YEARS.
The lawn guy next door to my left scalps their lawn to the ground too. I'm talking a 1/4" high (it seems) for all 3 lawns around me. They have Centipede, though, but it should be 1" to 2 1/2" in the summer. I cut mine at 2 1/2" last week because of the heavy rains and tall growth. It seems to like this height during this summer heat wave.
I cut my neighbor's 1/2 Centipede / 1/2 St. Augustine lawn to the right of me the other day, and a few times already, because she's on a mission trip. I set the mower at 2" because her lawn is LOW anyway. I spread some Stay-Green on her front lawn a couple or 3 weeks ago, and it seems to be growing heck of a lot better.
I tried this new (to me) fertilizer this year. It's from Lowe's Home Improvements only, or by mail order.
Stay Green All Natural 16-0-10. It has GREAT reviews online!
I got tired of using BLACK Kow manure every 2 years as a top coating. It NEVER went on sale.
I think it used to be 5.00 a bag, and now it's 6.50. I need about 30 bags each time. Maybe I'll buy some next Spring, maybe.
I put this new fertilizer on my other 1/2 of the lawn, which is Centipede, and WOW, this is absolutely the BEST it has looked since I've been here.
I also still put down some Milorganite 6-4-0 every 2 months or so, mainly to feed the Microbes.
I have a stockpile of both brands now. Bought them on sale!

I got tired of applying the lawn fertilizer etc. I have a lawn service that applies six steps, including grub treatment. They include free weed spraying at each app. I had them respray (free) once this year as I had a few areas with a couple nutsedge fronds that pop up, they are really hard to kill.
I will have aeration done sometime next month. Maybe Milorganite then (good stuff). I haven't decided if I'll overseed, I did it last fall. The service is pretty fair on all their pricing but their seeding. I can easily buy and apply seed. They wanted $18.00/1,000 sq to apply 1.5 lbs. of seed per 1,000 sf. Say 9K sf it's $162. IMO 1.5 lbs per 1K sf is a pretty light application. My lawn is very established so I may skip the seed. I can buy 25 lbs. of good RTF for $99.00.
My lot is 90' x 128' = 11,520 sf, less 1644 sf house footprint, patio and double drive. They charge $80.00 per app. which I think is fair, they use granular products and spray Q4 herbicide if I need the strong stuff.Post edited by aprazer402 on -

How did I forget!!! The BIGGEST part of a healthy lawn is to kill the suckers that are killing the root system of a lawn.
GRUB-eX is what really brought my lawn to a higher uniform healthy lushness.
I dug up some spots in my lawn many years ago and those suckers were quite plentiful. After researching about them, I read Michigan State U. (I think it was) did a plot study of all the brands who promote grub killing attributes. Only GRUB-eX killed grubs, but only in the Larvae stage. Nothing kills adult grubs without killing the lawn. The other brands sucked they said.
The application time is when June bugs hang onto screens. I started my ritual right then. I haven't missed a year since. Each year the lawn has gotten fuller. I just bought 4 bags of that on a big sale too. I use one bag a year in June. I've heard my neighbor a couple doors down ( God rest his soul ) that He thought an application in the Fall would help too. I might read up on it again soon.
I had a Yellow Nutsedge infestation the past couple or 3 years. I also have been getting an infestation of Chamber bitter. I killed off some grass along the driveway last year applying to much on that weed. It has just recently came back up a little. I was going to mix my go-to weed killer "Roundup weed killer for Southern Lawns". That is an awesome weed killer for Nutsedge and a ton of others. I'll be spraying it lightly asap but it is too hot, so I will see what happens. It can't be worse than last year.
Lawn care is a challenge for sure. Costly and time consuming too.
A man told me years ago when I commented on his awesome lawn, It takes A LOT of work to get to a lush and green level. I found out just how right he was 10 or 15 years later.

As mentioned getting and maintaining a nice lawn is a lot of work. I gave it my best shot for many years, fertilizing, watering, overseeding, de-grubbing, aerating, dethatching etc. My neighbor across the street got a runner of zoysia grass years ago and we watched it slowly take over his entire yard. He does nothing to his lawn except cut it and his lawn always looks like a thick green carpet; no weeds, ground moles or bare spots. I finally gave in last year and brought home a zoysia runner from him and it's doing well. The waiting for it to completely take over my lawn has begun and I'm in hopes of living long enough to see it happen as it does take several years.

Ah, cool-season grasses / Lawns.
My father-in-law lived in a neighborhood in Toledo, Ohio, that had beautiful lawns. No weeds, just tall blue-green shag carpets. I don't know what they had.
In Toledo, it was probably Kentucky Bluegrass or some other tall fescue. Btw, Emerald Zoysia grows well in the Atlanta area. It's considered the cream of the crop for yards around here. I'm not sure what the cutoff is for too much heat.See profile for rigs. Nothing else here. -
