I live in what seems to be a flight path for jet take-offs, or incoming for what-ever reasons. We can literally hear them coming from inside our house, and can run outside in time to see them fly directly over our heads. It happens quite often.

4 jets flew over my head yesterday. 2 staggered were hauling butt. 30 seconds or more later, 2 more came overhead staggered hauling butt.

Not quite as fast as the first jet in the above video, but still...AWESOME speed and POWER that vibrates our souls.

Close friends and family of my sister-in-law moved back to Nebr. two years ago. They lived in Kaysville, UT for about five years. He was stationed at Hill A.F.B.

When I was a kid in the Air Force, driving around the flightline road with C-130s, A-10s or F-16s on approach, I used to adjust my speed to try to time it so that I would be directly under the planes as they passed overhead.

Have to say the 130s were the best. They would vibrate your core. And yeah, @nooshinjohn, I agree on the smell of burning jet fuel. In the early 90s, it was still JP4 for the 130s. Distinct, and somehow evoked a sense of pride. The sound, feeling, and scent combo, the sound of the blades cutting the air and turboprop zoom/whistle, like this dopplered deep sustained zzzzzhwwwwwwww, with a warm propwash finish...

I would not choose to live in a flight path now, though. Cool to watch, but I value peace and quiet now But for an air show? Heck yeah! Being that close to military aircraft in flight is such a visceral experience.

Absolutely!!!! ^^^^^^ @msg! Still notice all those things years after I worked at Lockheed for 3-1/2 years in the early 1970's when the C-5 was in production.

I worked in the tunnels of the B-1 building where all the latest mainframe computers and software people were housed. Primarily, I worked on the progress payments system for the C-5. What I remember is getting called in almost every Saturday night because of software problems. Each week a report on computer tape was flown to the Air Force in St. Louis. It took awhile but I finally had a free Saturday night when all the old software problems were fixed.

My father worked at Lockheed for over 20 years; he started in 1955 when the C-130 began production. He was on the rollout team of the C-5. We had a few years of overlap while we both worked there. He was mainly on the flight line area where the C-5's received final checks.

When the C-5 was scheduled to make its first flight which happened multiple times on Saturday mornings, I drove to the end of the Dobbins runway on Highway 41 to view. I went several times but each time the plane would taxi and start its takeoff roll but stopped. The first time I didn't go, the C-5 took to the air for its maiden flight.

In the late 1990's and 2000's as the F-22 was manufactured, each plane flew over north GA and East COBB county where I live. The F-22 engine has an unusual engine sound and while in my yard, I would look up and be amazed. Quite a show too for all people driving on I-75and US Highway 41 when the F-22's landed and took off on the East end of the Dobbins runway. The F-22 is quite a large plane with the two engines.

I remember the sounds of each plane in that time, and I probably still remember.


I was looking at some of my father's things a few weeks ago, and I found this picture of the rollout team. He is the one with the red mark under his feet. His area was mainly electrical and electronics.

When I lived in the Vinings/Smyrna area before I got married, I remember the weekends when the NAS was training the F-18 pilots on takeoff/landing from Dobbins. They would fly over me with full flaps and throttles up. It was nice and loud and they would do it over and over. It didn't bother me back then. I moved out to West Cobb before the F-22 was making test flights. I wish I could have seen that. I do remember the C-5s flying over the Lost Mountain area frequently though and that was very distinctive. The flight path for some of their training went right over us and it shook the house. Where I'm at now, I usually only hear trains.

Yes, the C-5 is distinctive as well. I swear those things look like they're going so slow on take off and landing, that they're about to fall out of the sky! But they don't.

And that wing profile with flaps fully extended is extreme.
