New to me 10B

Saw these listed on CL the next town over. Auditioned in a really dark old trailer house, hooked up to an extremely tired-sounding low end 80s receiver & CD player.

Dirty and dusty, but the cabinets/vinyl were nearly mint. The half-dead amp didn't really give any indication of sound quality, all drivers appeared to work and there was no woofer rub. I have a set of 7Bs I've owned and loved since the 80s, so I pulled the trigger.

Connected them to the Dynaco, and they sound pretty good! The crossovers appear to be untouched, have stickers from '85 and '86.

My order of crossover rebuild parts arrives tomorrow, looking forward to seeing how much improvement that brings.

I think they will sound better if you can pull them out into the room a bit (experiment with how much) and put them on some solid stands with mass to them to raise the acoustic center up closer to your ear height and to decouple from the wooden floor somewhat, especially if it is a suspended floor above another room and not on solid concrete. It is never good for imaging to have stuff between the speakers. Don't forget to replace those SL2000 with RD0194 when your budget allows. Order them from Polk and ask for the forum discount.

  • The mailman brought my crossover rebuild parts today, so I spent the early evening rebuilding those. Back together now, the new caps need to burn in a bit, but these already sound less constrained.

I've pulled them out another foot or so, which does seem to improve imaging. A set of stands in definitely on the menu. I think I have enough oak scraps to build a set without needing to buy much more.

This room's in the basement, so there's concrete right underneath that laminate.

New tweeters on the list for sure too. I wouldn't say these are shrill, but they are a bit much.

Do you have to call Polk to order the 194s, or are they somewhere on their site?

    Thanks for the guidance!

Call Polk. You want the RD0194-1, that's a zero.

  • Hey…nice job on those stands. I’ve got some 7Bs as well. I’m looking forward to your impressions on how they compare with the 10s once you get those new tweets in!

Very nice job on the stands!!

    Any pics of the crossovers?
  • No new tweeters yet, December budget is kind of wrapped up in Xmas things. Will probably order those in January.

Here's a shot of one of the rebuilt crossovers. New caps and resistors came from Parts Express. The green resistors are pretty long, but they have long copper leads, so everything fit nicely.

I'm curious, why didn't you upgrade the most important cap, the yellow mylar?

  • I don't typically replace film caps, since they are generally good long-term, unlike electrolytics.

But I'm willing to replace them if there's a benefit.

It's a crappy mylar, easily bettered. Stick a Jantzen Superior Z or Clarity CSA in there. You can thank me later

Both of those 12uF mylars were in series with the tweeter but you only replaced one with the Audyn. Not all film caps are created equal. Polypropylenes are considered to be better than Mylar. They have lower dissipation factor DF.

There's only one mylar on a 10B crossover.

Depends on what was in Polk's part bin that day at Gallagher Mansion.

  • What tightwads! That electrolytic is in series with the tweeter also, even if it is part of the contour network. If I was replacing only one of them I would've done what OP did as well as that electrolytic probably has more than 10% DF at this point in time and mylar is probably still around 1%.

But I wouldn't have done only one.

Thank you for the recommendation. I'll likely do this after I replace the tweeters.

A lot of us glued a stainless steel washer on the back side to keep the bezel from deforming as badly when tightening down to the box. It can deform enough without them to cause a buzz from deformation of the plastic bezel pressing down on the voice coil.

    #10 stainless steel washer.

Rob's tweeter bezels are excellent! You can have them anodized black or leave them natural. Whatever you do, don't polish the heck out them...looks like yuck.

  • Just happened to have some stainless washers, so I dropped these in.

I completed the rebuild of the Sony 1120A a few weeks back, so it's been the main amplifier since then. This setup sounds really good.

So far I'd say the RD0 tweets still have plenty of high end, just at a more balanced level compared to the SL2000.
