Thinking about retirement.

You'll be surprised how fast times goes in retirement. A week, a month a year is gone before you know it. I can't believe I'll be 75 this month, it seems only a few years ago I was 60.
The people to me who have problems in retirement are the ones who don't have hobbies and all they do is sit and watch TV. They waste away. I agree, time passes faster in retirement then when I was working 65-65+ hours a week. Anyway, I’ve spent 73 years climbing this mountain. Hope to enjoy sitting at the top for as long as possible before the inevitable downhill slide.

You should look into Exchange Traded Funds and get some assets into dividend paying funds. You can get a significant amount of regular income from investing in those kinds of funds. Not only do the funds grow and gain value, that value also affects the dividend payments.
I know folks who have close to $300K in funds they built up over decades of paychecks tied up in ETFs and are pulling in $80K a year from dividend payments alone. But given the right funds, as little as $50K can get you a grand a month. Granted, that's not a small chunk of change at all but you don't have to start out with that. Reinvest dividends for a year or two while adding more to the funds from other income sources and it can compound quickly.
Additionally, if you do retire and you have a 401k, some allow you to take out a lump sum independent of your metered withdrawals. If you have a sizable 401k and can afford it, pulling a lump sum out and sticking it in an annuity that returns on a quarterly basis can pad that nest egg significantly. Since annuities typically have time limits before a reinvestment action is required, they can have a significant tax burden but you only get taxed on earnings, not the initial investment.
If you have rental income and still some time before you actually retire, leverage that rental income to build up some market based assets. I'm Gen X and I've gone my whole life hearing from my Boomer parents that social security will not be a thing when I retire...if I get to retire. Hell, at my age, I won't get full social security benefits until I'm almost 68 so if I want to retire and have some time to enjoy my life before I start falling apart or die then I can't rely on social security. I've been trying to find every potential income vehicle I can from market backed investments to stacks of savings bonds from my defense contractor days to collecting pensions from various jobs I've had to my own 401k/IRA funds and even my own rental income. I'm even thinking about purchasing an established business for some passive income in that respect too.
So while I don't have $80K worth of dividend payments a year, I have a significant percentage of my current income coming from not my job. The goal is to have enough of that income so that social security isn't needed and maybe I just invest that into various investment vehicles too?
If anything, I'm more pissed off at myself for not looking further into ETFs sooner but at the same time, I didn't have the money to invest in them until now anyway.
