They all smelled like weed.
I had the same thought -- well... it was hazy... but it was a thought.

Except for the ones that smelled like stale beer and urinal cakes.

You know you're getting old when you recognize the word "Flowmax" but have to select and search, then realize
"I'm taking it".

I believe that's a Western Auto cb radio. Even the company is long out of business. -
Yup. Back then, it doubled as a "radar detector". Between that and people hitting their brakes for no reason far ahead, you had time to be aware of where they were hiding and slow down.

Sounds like a gen x youngster; I remember when we were able to get rid of our 8 party line (our ring was 1 long and 1 short) and get our own private line. -

Oh, the woman on our party line's a nosy thing
She picks up her receiver when she knows it's my ring

I don't know how many people were on our party line. Probably the whole rural community. All I know is if it rang, everyone picked up. Most hung up when they found out it wasn't for them. Some stayed on because they were nosy.Gustard X26 Pro DAC

Geeez, I remember when the "Party line".....was another line. You could actually switch between the two.
That was high falutin' technology right there...
Right before the 10 pound "cell phones" folks could get in their cars....at an unbelievable cost...that took up half the passenger seat.

Those are good memories when the family got our first telephone. I must have been 10 to 12 years old. The colored phones were more expensive than the black models. I remember the first phone call I made.
Anyone have a gossip bench. They came in all shapes and styles. Here's one that let a person talk and keep stuff to "drink" in the little cabinet. One of my aunts had one that I really liked.
Another aunt had a built in wall shelf similar the one below with a second phone (always) in the kitchen.
Note the shelf just outside the bathroom in a hallway.

However my favorite telephone memory is:
Our house had a phone in my room and one in the kitchen. About a year after having the new phone, I learned that my mom's Aunt Ida always called almost every morning about 8:00 AM. That was 15-20 minutes before the school bus arrived which I watched for looking out a window in my room at the other end of the house.
I had learned to mimic Aunt Ida's voice so occasionally I would dial our number put the phone on the base. Our telephone would ring; mom would pick up the phone and talk to me thinking I was her aunt.
FUN! The fun ended on a day when the bus was early. I said to my mom "The bus is early. I have to hang up.""Sometimes you have to look to the past to understand where you are going in the future"Harry / Marietta GA -

Oddly enough, our family cottage on Walloon Lake had a two party line until 2001. I guess it was cheap, and the other party only used their cottage about one week a year. It ended when that person sold their cottage.
So you don't have to be that old. I guess Ameritech still had operating party lines in Michigan as late as 2002.

Heck, as a freshman in HS, I remember seeing multiple rifles hung on on the back windows of the student's pickup trucks. Don't remember any school shootings either.
It all changed the next year.
