Question regarding GPS chips in each end of football and advancement/placement accuracy:
If the player with the football is "DOWN" on the ground after a play and the football lands parallel to the yard lines, doesn't GPS in each end actually show the ball's advancement shorter by 1/2 of the ball's diameter?

Isn't the same argument true if the football is in a players hands parallel to the yard lines when the player is called "DOWN" by the referee?

At the goal line, GPS in each end of the football could result in a non-touchdown call although the outer most diameter of the football is touching the goal line.

    be2bdgt5nf1l.png

Now, think of the football not parallel and not perpendicular to the yard lines when a player with the football is called "DOWN" either on the ground or by the referee.

It's a complicated mathematical problem due to the multiple places on the football's outer shell that could be more forward than the GPS chips at the ends.

The GPS chips in the ends of the football work only when one end of the football is more forward than any other location on the football's outer shell which only occurs when the football is perpendicular to the yard lines. We know a football is never always perpendicular to the yard lines when a player with it is "DOWN".

I am just saying it's more complicated than it appears.

Most importantly, there is a current fan issue/perception of how a play is going and the game is going that is certainly involved in using the camera or GPS chips. Fans can see the chains on the sidelines which gives us insight on the progress of a particular play and the game in each or our minds. Let's hope that part of the game is not ignored.

I like using the chains best!! I don't believe taking the simplest human element out of it solves anything.

I get where you are coming from, and it does seem like that would be an issue, but… remember that there would be two (2) chips in the ball - one at each end. A (fairly) simple math algorithm plotting the two chips’ orientation and relation to each other, relative to the pre-programmed azimuth of the field orientation would net the absolute position of the ball at any given moment. Added to this the constant of the ball’s dimensions in any axis, and you could even solve for absolute position, in all three dimensions, relative to any point on the field. These computations could even be tracked in real time, letting you know the maximum forward position of the ball at any point during a play, even completely obscured under a pile….

What's the fun in that? All the whiners who complain about the refs shoddy work will have to move to a different venue.

Why not put another in the center, would that help anything?

Haha, that’s honestly the perfect Bay Area survival motto. Three lefts to dodge a bad turn and maybe a fourth to escape the chaos that is Market Street. That street has its own rules, vibes, and gravitational pull

Wait, this is a north Carolina thing?

    Lol

They have removed almost almost left turns around here, you have to turn right, do a u turn and then proceed

Truth be told, having been t boned doing a left turn 10 years ago... I actually stopped doing most left turns and was doing right turns/u turns for a while before they made the changes

In the Memphis area people turn left regardless of the light. And from any
lane as well. They're all trying to kill me.

After further thought, it actually becomes 3 lights....not 2. How lovely.

I read once that such a high percentage of accidents occur during left turns, that UPS plots their delivery routes with NO left turns (unless absolutely necessary).

To be clear, that graphic I shared last night was only talking about turning left onto a 1-way street. I don't like the idea of doing that from a 2-way street, but if both streets are 1-way, there really isn't any more risk than turning right on red.

I'm not sure you can really ever shake it. It completely changed the way I drive.

There was a tractor trailer at the intersection with a dash cam. The person who hit us at full speed ran the red light a full six, yes SIX seconds after it had turned red. He hit us so hard that the car rotated and the passenger rear bumper hit it again.

We were very fortunate to walk away with no real issue.

I carry a slightly different mindset albeit two different venues here, I've experienced highspeed crashes, at least two a year since 1986 - 2008 (motorcycle racing), all but a couple I just dusted myself off and even continued to race another class in the same day (fall at 120mph and go, uh oh, boom boom, is the bike okay?)

That being said, I was never affected by any of it (physically maybe). I do agree with becoming a changed driver on the street as I have been T-boned once and not that long ago. In 2019 I had purchased an F-150 King Ranch, hadn't made my first payment, hadn't gotten my plates yet, my light turned green and just about through the intersection and a missile hit my front passenger wheel, bending the frame and totaling my truck.

The sons-a-**** here run lights like it's a privilege, 6 and 7 vehicles at a time. Ever since that T-bone experience, I drive hyper-aware as if I were on the racetrack.

It's sad, because the only time I'm pissed off is when I'm behind the wheel. Ayesha looks at me and says, "you're different when we drive" :D I just laugh and say, "when the shield comes down baby, I become someone else" :D

There's an area North of Memphis called Frayser. There are NO driving
rules in Frayser. I remember coming up to an intersection and a green
light and I see a guy coming from the right hauling @## and had his
emergency flashers going. He ran that red light without even looking
around. A week later someone did it again. I also had someone come
Up behind me going at least 20 over flashing his headlights. Yes, I got
Out of his way. They like to shoot at each other a lot as well. Now that
I'm retired I'll never set foot there again. They're all lunatics.

Here in the Low Country of SC I have saved myself several times over the last few years. People run red lights all the time and now that the tourists are showing up (always lost) they add extra spice to the mix. I keep as much space around me as possible and trust no one.
