Gas Prices

Fuel prices are cheap compared to the other essentials like housing and food. I drive about 15k miles a year making my fuel bill about $1,700 per
year @ current prices. Heck my cable bill is nearly 3k a year. Working on getting rid of this sheet.

Yeah maybe but I'm thinking if you are a long distance trucker you could drive 15K miles per week. Fuel costs are a significant part of inflation due to their effect on grocery prices and manufacturing costs.

I always find it humorous when people say things like “…gas prices don’t affect me because I drive an EV”, or “…gas prices don’t affect me because I don’t drive much”.

While statements like that may be true, I would ask - do you eat? Do you heat/cool your home? Do you use electricity? Do you order things on line? Do you use electronics? Buy records/CDs?

Gas/diesel prices are tied directly to the price of oil (insane state/local taxes aside). And crude oil is used in virtually EVERYTHING. From pesticides and herbicides to all “man made” fabrics, plastics, rubber, to virtually all electricity generation, to ALL shipping (by truck, plane of ship)… Crude oil is EVERYWHERE. So wether you want to admit it or not, “gas prices” affect virtually every aspect of your material life.

^^^^^sure and so are labor and health care costs. Which are much bigger drivers of the price of goods than gas or oil.
Especially considering that the average price of a barrel of oil the last 4 years is about 15 % more than it was the previous
3 years. I did not include 2020 as that was a total shet show as we all know.

To blame the present level inflation on just gas and oil prices is too simplistic and easy. And don’t get me started on price gouging.

    With all due respect.

Gas never goes up or down for me. I give them $20.00 and put $20.00 in every time. You guys should move..

I re-read my last post, and I don’t see where I blamed “all” inflation on oil prices, or discounted the impact of labor or healthcare - all due respect.

That said, the thing that oil, labor and healthcare costs all have in common is this: Once government gets involved, costs skyrocket and supply dwindles.

And labor and healthcare costs go into the price of gasoline and diesel and natural gas, in addition to the prices of fuel. It isn't just the raw commodity prices of nat. gas or crude oil that go into the at the pump final prices. It has to be gotten out of the ground, distributed, refined, delivered...... You can see below that refining cost went up 32% with almost the same just 25% higher crude oil price and that was just 2023.

You could blame nearly everything on the price of oil. If it cost me $150 a week to drive to and from work and I making $7.25 an hour, that job doesn’t make a whole bunch of sense anymore does it? The rising cost of fuel affects absolutely everything.

^^ I have an extensive response to that Kex, but it would be certain to upset people here and most definitely would get this thread shut down. Suffice to say that at least that money is transparent whereas people in certain (ahem) positions where they are paid low 6 figures salaries are somehow getting filthy rich.

PS: Rachel Maddow gets $25M for one show per week 🤣🤣🤣

PS2: "Profits" pretty much includes CEO pay and dividends and stock buybacks doesn't it? That was in the graph. We need to find a graph like I posted but one that separates refining costs and profits instead of lumping them together. That was sneaky of them lol.

So you’re driving 700 miles a week, or 140 miles a day, for a commute to job that pays $7.50 an hour?!

    * at California ⛽️ prices and a vehicle able to travel 350 miles on one tank of gas.

I was speaking hypothetically... the minimum wage is much higher than that in California to begin with. My poit was the price of oil has a direct impact on every single aspect of our lives.

If you are buying Door Dash regularly or (at all)... chances are you are not concerned about financial success, interest or a budget of any kind!

Obviously… I have sufficient respect for you to know that you would never make that choice.

Minimum wage in California as of January 01, 2025 = $16.50/h.

140 miles a day is still a very long commute. At an average speed of 60 mph, that would be over 2.5 hours a day lost to commuting. 12.5 hours a week. 😱

The average commute time for American workers is approximately 26 minutes one way. Most commuters have travel times between 10 and 29 minutes.

If the weekly budget was $150 in ⛽️ to commute to work, at the national average of under $3 per gallon, that would be over 50 gallons. At an average 25 mpg, that would mean 1,250 miles driven per work week, or 250 miles per day commute! 😮

My wife loses 2 1/2 hours a day every day to go less than 20 miles on the 101... she averages 12mpg due to all the stop and go BS. I fill her Mercedes once a week @110 dollars a pop.

I have zero respect for you, but since you want to prove your mental superiority by being a jackwagon, let's do real numbers that even you can understand, shall we?

At 16.50/hr and a 40 your work week, a person will earn $660.00, with the equivalent of at least one monthly check going to the tax man. That leaves three checks available to the worker every month, or $1980/month for expenses. If $440.00 is going in the gas tank every month, $1540.00 is left over for rent/groceries/bills and other expenses. EVERY ONE of these things is impacted by gas prices. Thankfully, she is nowhere near the minimum wage, but that as they say is none of your business.

    Charming, as always. 🤦‍♂️

But I thought we were musing hypothetically… 🤔

A Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 doesn’t require $110 to fill, unless you intentionally pick the most expensive gas station in your area and drive it until it’s running on fumes. Is the fuel tank even 20 gallons from full to empty?

And since you want to do math, anyone earning $16.50/h isn’t buying a car than can only manage 12 mpg. But a GLC 300 should be getting closer to 20 mpg city mileage. Isn’t that a 2L I-4 with a nine-speed automatic?
If you have an inferiority complex, that’s on you. I’m not trying to prove anything.

20 mpg@cruiseing speed, bumper to bumper, stop and go rarely above 25 mph will destroy your economy. Back to ignore for you now. Every time I give you a chance to prove you have more than a box of rocks for a brain, you prove otherwise.
