I just don't have this issue. I cook at home or eat at smaller local places. I also don't like the kiosk only payment restaurants. But I haven't been to one with the exception of the airport in about 6 months. It's very easy to avoid. Even easier to not complain about.

You could just go to real restaurants over corporate chain garbage.

I’m sure you’d think that. However, extensive travel for work doesn’t always allow for the “foodie” experience. Wait times, cost and location are all factors. Not to mention that a lot of our favorite mom &pops went out during the asinine covid crap. Further, many of the “mom & pops” have the exact same issues (kinda crazy to think they would be immune, actually).

I also have not had this issue when I travel for business. It's just very avoidable in my experience. Not even hard to avoid anywhere I've been.

Fast food joints never were considered, "livable wage" jobs. They are for those starting out in the workforce, with no experience needed or expected. If one choose to stay, they moved up into the chain of management, where they could (in theory) earn a livable wage.

They could be if they had good workers, then they wouldn't need 15 people to run the place, maybe just 8 people. I see workers taking orders and then just standing around waiting for the cooks to hand them the food.

I couldn’t tell you the last time I went inside a fast food restaurant. I didn’t even know about the ordering at a kiosk thing. Lifestyles are different, but if I’m getting “fast food,” I’m staying in my car.

In all seriousness, I travel a lot for work - 126 hotel nights last year (not counting late day trips). I enjoy finding new places often, but sometimes, at 7-8 o’clock at night after a 12 hour day, you just want something fairly decent and somewhat quick. Added to that, sometimes I just don’t have the time or energy to find a good place. PLUS, I stay in a lot of SMALL towns - Ely, Elko NV, Vernal, Tooele, Logan UT, numerous small Idaho towns, etc…

Ordered a bagel with cream cheese at an airport recently, don't recall the name of the business. Go to pay with cash, nope card only for a 4 dollar something bagel. Seriously, I said shaking my head. Screen asks what amount of tip...ZERO!

Funny that it used to be something like “$5 minimum purchase to use credit card.”

At my business we offer a cash discount. Credit card fees take a huge part of the profit for a small business.

Man, if you are gonna eat out? Well then do it in style. EAT OUT!

All you need to do is look for the local brothel.

Oh, you are talking about food. Please disregard this rather informative post. I will see myself to the door.

Let me guess...BEFORE you even got your order.

That's another one of my curmudgeon tendencies....why in the $%&*% would I tip before I even have service or see what the $%&*% I just paid for? I literally just ordered....standing up.

Tips should come with some kind of service. Real service does NOT include one standing up to take an order (unless at a fast food joint). Tips should also come after service. Not before.

This world has become bass ackwards. Standards have fallen dramatically.

There was an episode of "The Beverly Hillbillies" where Mr. Drysdale tried to entice these rich stock market men to The Commerce Bank by claiming Jed Clampett was a financial genius. When they got Jed alone, they asked him for a (stock) tip. Jed says: "You want a good tip? Plant your corn early."

Ok, I don't know why everyone gets so riled up about a tip option being on the POS (point of sale) device. That's just something that the vendors put in because they were asked to during COVID when people WANTED to give extra to people working in service jobs.
Everyone really knows that tips are for bartenders, table servers (who take your order at the table), or skilled personal services, such as barbers/stylists, massage therapists, cab rides (if they were good), or pizza delivery.
Nobody should feel guilt by skipping the tip on counter service, ever. Those people make a worker wage that is at least minimum wage. Servers and bartenders usually don't make minimum wage in the USA at least.

I’ve been thinking about this statement this morning, and it’s kind of funny. While I certainly cannot refute your characterization, I do wish to stake out a definition of ‘curmudgeon”.

While I’m not as old as -most- curmudgeons here (mid 50’s), I used to mock and deride “curmudgeons” myself - old man yelling at clouds, etc. But as I’ve gotten older, the shoe has slipped over to the other foot, as it were.

I think of a “curmudgeon” as someone who has lived long enough to witness (and lament) the erosion of what were once common decencies, norms and considerations. In my humble opinion, we were a better society before everyone had their face glued to a mobile device at all times, had headphones on everywhere they went, and when they actually got DRESSED (and combed their hair) before going into public, and had the ability to socially interact with a person IN REAL LIFE.

    So yea - I’m thinkin’ I’m a curmudgeon… proudly.

I see myself as one about half the time too. I wasn't an insult. I just love the word because I think it does apply to many men over 50.

There is another unpleasant side to this.

You are tipping before your food arrives.

There are times when disgruntled employees see "no tip" and add extra "things" to the food.

The people working at the fast food places have a different view of what is right and wrong.

We can't be naive in today's world.

    You are correct sir.
On a related note...when did the standard Tip jump from 15 to 20 percent?? Long ago I recall the standard was 15. Now you look like a cheapskate if you tip 15 lol.

It is my understanding that it changed up the 5% during COVID.

I was using 18% as standard tip for table service long before Covid. 15% was back in the 20th century.
Regardless of percentages, I always tip based upon the amount of service offered. This can range anywhere between 10 to even 70%. I never tip if I have to stand up while ordering and I have to fetch my own meal, then clear my own table.

If we are in a busy establishment and we take more time to chat after the meal, the tip goes up.

About 20 years ago around here 20% became the norm for good service. Maybe longer.
The difference I see on the card readers is the choices now start at 18%, and go as high as 30%.

I remember when ten percent was the norm.

Good service deserves a tip and…. That’s up to the person tipping their hard earned money as to what percentage that should be.

I’ve heard of these kiosk things at mcdougles, and they have a tip suggestion amount.
Now what the cluck, it’s the same thing as a drive thru. The person just hands you your food!

It started during covid I think when this tipping thing went wild. And as someone said it was a way to reward the service workers during that time. Later I felt like I was being guilt-tripped into tipping these workers because generally their pay is crap and, OK, I have a little extra dough. But now I've come to think of it as I'm being suckered into subsidizing a business that won't (or can't) pay their employees what they should. I no longer feel good about chipping in an extra 20%. And if that's what it takes for a business or employee to get by then, yes, I'm being suckered because I'm also subsidizing the people who do not tip. Paying 20% more for the same food/service.

On a different note, I was in a coffee shop in New Orleans. The card device asks for a tip. So I ask the guy, "Do you get the tips from this machine?". The guy tells me, "thanks for asking" and then tells me that the owner takes a cut! So I zeroed out the tip and handed the dude some cash.

I never tip on any card purchases, I tip the server personally with cash, if they choose to declare it for taxes so be it. I'm not declaring it for them with a card tip that is for sure.

Wife & I owned a bar in idaho late 90’s late 2000’s and the state wanted us to declare our employees tips so they would be taxed on income.

Quite a few restaurant and bar owners went to their meeting to protest this tax.
They were politely told to pound sand.

Not sure what the law in Idaho is today regarding that tax.
