This new “DoorDash”, “grub hub”, “uber-eats”, etc culture is really starting to annoy the **** out of me. More and more, I feel like an inconvenience to restaurant staff when I actually GO IN to a restaurant to enjoy a meal.
The family and I went to Texas Roadhouse the other night for dinner. At the door I get asked “are you here for a pickup?”. “No”, I say. “Did you order on line?”. “No”. “Oh - we’ll be with you shortly.” Well… It’s clear that priority is given to orders placed with these delivery services. It’s the same at more and more establishments. I don’t want to download your app, I don’t want to have to scan a QR code to see your menu, and I don’t want to order ahead on line. I just want to go out to eat - you know, be greeted, seated, have a server take my order, eat, pay (cash), and leave. Sadly, I think I’m a dying breed here.
About a year ago, a chicken place opened up a few miles from our house - “Dirty Bird”. Went in to give it a try, and guess what? You have to order AND pay on line - even if you are standing AT THE COUNTER! No cashier (or cash). I left. That place closed up about 3 months ago - not saying that’s why, but…

It's the new norm for fast food and most fast casual for sure. Dare I say I almost prefer it than to talk to the staff who simply don't care
I don't see it to much in regular sit down spots like ocharley chili's bonefish etc- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I feel your pain @daddyjt!! Our local Popeys chicken has made it so you can no longer pay cash, it must be an app payment or debit/credit card. The other thing that bugs the snot out of me is when you pay cash and the server just "assume" that your change coming back is their tip. I had taken my two sons out to christmas dinner at Texas Road House. The bill came to a little over $120.00. I put two $100 bills on the table to pay, server came and picked up the money and never came back. After about 20min I inquired with another server as to where my server went. My server came back and asked if there was a problem? WELL H3LL YES THERE IS !!! When he said he thought it was his tip I laid into him loud enough a manger came to the table. I politely explained to the manager how his employee had made an executive decision that he was getting a $75.00 tip and never came back to the table with my change from the $200.00 I gave him. He got ZERO tip from me ! I stood there in front of the manager and told the server guy everywhere he fouled up during our meal, how I had still planned on giving him a tip even though his service sucked. But after his "executive" decision IF I ran the place he would be fired right in front of the customer and how lucky he was that I was NOT his manager....

Lol'd. Imagine thinking/assuming that someone just left you a $75 tip, and not even confirming it. Unbelievable.

I'm over 60 & Ive never done Uber Grub or any online orders & have no plans on it.. I have to say that these tip buttons on these fancy computers have saved tons of money. I usually hit the most % button & it's still WAY less then what I use to leave as a tip. So, I'll play their game.. I'm a trucker & eat out a lot & I have left vgood tips in my travels. I've even asked the cook to come out & tip them as well for a great meal..

I used Uber eats once because they had a 25 dollar off coupon and the restaurant had a buy one get one free, so all said and done after tipping the driver we saved about 5 dollars from going into the restaurant for take out at regular pricing.
Otherwise anyone who is regularly using those services is making substantially more money than me or is very unaware of how much they are dropping. The prices are astronomical!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
There's a reason why there are a large number of unbelievably wealthy individuals in "the new economy".
(and no, it's not the drivers or the order packers or the coders who maintain the apps...)

Another 'side-effect' of this trend that chaps me is how those drivers park at the curb, creating traffic flow problems around the front door of the restaurant. The bill came to a little over $120.00. I put two $100 bills on the table to pay, server came and picked up the money and never came back.

The casino near my house tried that ( you have to order online if you are ordering takeout) that lasted about a week. I order takeout in the casino and play slots until the food is done, I imagine quite a few people do that.

I would rather pick up food myself if need be. That way I know if it hot, correct, and I will actually receive my order at all. I miss the days of living in the Chicagoland area where we could pick up the phone, speak to a human who had verbal skills to communicate with you, and next thing you know and awesome, hot, thin crust pizza would show up at your door by a non-hipster within 30 minutes.

It ain't just you. I walked into a Taco Bell the other day. There were 4 men behind the counter, two of them within 3 or 4 feet of me. Yes, I know it says to order on the kiosk. I don't do kiosks. I want a damned human.
Kiosks don't do special requests, special orders and some of the items I want to order require a degree in quantum physics and computer enginnering to try and figure out, if you can even find it at all.
Needless to say, I stood there for about a minute or two, as they were talking about what dates they were going to have on Friday night, none of them said a thing to me at all, but one of them looked at me and then the kiosk sign. I turned around and walked out. It really does feel as if you are an inconvenience. Customer service....it used to mean something in America. Well, it still does to me.

At the grocery store - Publix, the people who order online have choice parking places and it really pisses me off."Sometimes you have to look to the past to understand where you are going in the future"“Fa sol sol la la fa sol la ... " ~ a soul-stirring sound that is at once alluring and haunting surges through the room as their voices rise and merge. First they sing the notes, then the words from the Sacred Harp hymnal, which was first published in 1844. Sacred Harp a singing tradition that dates back nearly to the founding of the nation.

LOL that's where I park to makeup for all those with more than 10 items in the cart

While we’re at it…
Grocery shopping - whether at Smith’s(Kroger) or Walmart, I am sick of dodging the “on-line” order pickers as I try to shop. These people are trained to IGNORE you - they have ONE TASK, and it ain’t you if you are shopping in the store. I used to politely move aside for them, or wait for them to work a section before I move in. NO MORE. I DO NOT move out of their way, I will stand my ground, move into areas I want to shop, and take as long as I want.
Again, I feel like the inconvenient obstruction to the store because I chose to show up and shop IN PERSON.
Near as I can tell, Winco does NOT have order pullers for on line. This has lead me to do more and more shopping there. They also prefer cash. How refreshing.“Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. And if they are equal, they are not free.”

When employers need to pay pimple faced kids 20 bucks an hour, you end up ordering from an IPad.

Come to think of it, I've never seen a pizza place featuring Georgia-style pizza.

Technology should enhance or improve a customer's experience, not take it way or make it worse. IMNSH curmudgeon's experience.
It's like the difference between a Circle K gas station and a Quick Trip in our area. At the Circle K, there could be two people in line and you are standing there for 10 minutes before you can pay for your goods. Alternatively, there can be 10 or more people in line at a QT and you are walking out the door in less than 2 minutes. The difference? Using technology and processes that move the line along quickly. Both use humans but there is a vast difference between the two experiences. Every. Single. Time.
At least one of the gas station franchises around here has thought of a self checkout. Those are convenient, especially when people take seemingly forever to choose 1 out of 10 different lottery tickets, but the problem is, half of them don't work/malfunction or are out of service.

Scratch tickets should be laced with Anthrax, and I don't mean the band.

Its just you, and apparently, a few other curmudgeons here.
I’ve been thinking about this statement this morning, and it’s kind of funny. While I certainly cannot refute your characterization, I do wish to stake out a definition of ‘curmudgeon”.
While I’m not as old as -most- curmudgeons here (mid 50’s), I used to mock and deride “curmudgeons” myself - old man yelling at clouds, etc. But as I’ve gotten older, the shoe has slipped over to the other foot, as it were.
I think of a “curmudgeon” as someone who has lived long enough to witness (and lament) the erosion of what were once common decencies, norms and considerations. In my humble opinion, we were a better society before everyone had their face glued to a mobile device at all times, had headphones on everywhere they went, and when they actually got DRESSED (and combed their hair) before going into public, and had the ability to socially interact with a person IN REAL LIFE.
So yea - I’m thinkin’ I’m a curmudgeon… proudly.“Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. And if they are equal, they are not free.”

Fast food joints are kinda between a rock and a hardplace. Labor has become too expensive with 15-20 buck min. wage laws, plus finding people who want to work those jobs is getting harder to find. You put in the kiosk, take away the labor aspect in order to turn a profit and you alienate the older crowd who doesn't want to deal with electronics, or even scanning codes. They'd rather have that human interaction. A no win situation.HT SYSTEM-

Fast food joints never were considered, "livable wage" jobs. They are for those starting out in the workforce, with no experience needed or expected. If one choose to stay, they moved up into the chain of management, where they could (in theory) earn a livable wage.

Agreed, but sometimes there are time, traffic and location issues. Not to mention, sometimes there is a wait to be seated at some of the better establishments.
I would much rather eaten anywhere else but Yucko Bell the other day. Where I was? It would have taken me about 30 minutes to go to a restaurant of choice because traffic was gridlock in both directions, due to construction. And I'm only talking about going a half a mile in this instance.
I just walked next door for an equally crappy meal at KFC. But at least, they took my order.
