Best covers of originals.

I am no fan of covers because they are mostly bad basterdizations of the real deal. The first standout that I think of is "All along the watchtower" because a lot of people know the Hendrix version than Bob's. What's your favorite cover of a popular tune?

Here's one but I still think this is one of the best...Love me some Iz, even his native Hawaiian that I can't understand the words but is warming just hanging out, or doing some paper work. Just like smooth Reggae, just that feel good beat and rhythm

Manfred Mann's Mighty Quinn, Blinded by the Light, and Randy Newman's Living Without You are all very, very good, IMO.

Harry Nilsson's version of Living Without You and, of course, his cover of Badfinger's Without You are both superb.

The Who's versions of Summertime Blues and Young Man Blues from Live at Leeds are pretty keen, too.

The Wailin Jennys' covers of Neil Young's Old Man, John Hiatt's Take It Down and Jane Siberry's Calling All Angels are all superb.

Plenty of good covers... just need to look around. :)
  • .While Poison did a good version of their hit "Talk Dirty to Me", there's something to be said for Shirley Knight's cover in the movie "Grandma's Boy".

Rock it to the rafters Bea !

Yes, that is very good, as - I would opine - is Mr. Gordon Sumner's version of Come Down in Time on the same album.

If we're gonna include tribute album covers -- the Dead tribute album Deadicated has some mighty fine ones. My favorite-est of all, though, is the Cowboy Junkies' take on To Lay Me Down.

But, as a friend of mine once commented, Margo Timmins could sing the Toronto phonebook and I'd be mesmerized. :)

Oh, and speaking of covers -- from the R&B Rolling Stones tribute album Paint it Blue a scorching cover by the late Luther Allison of what is probably my favorite Rolling Stones song (FWIW):

I think most (if not all) of her covers are better than the originals. "Songbird" comes to mind.

Also, "You're No Good" from the second album.

"Diver Down" had "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?", "Pretty Woman", "Dancing in the Streets", "Big Bad Bill" and "Happy Trails".

"Just a Gigolo" was David Lee Roth solo. As was "California Girls", "Coconut Grove", "Tobacco Road", and maybe a few more I don't remember. :p
