Best center speaker for vintage Polks.

I picked up a pair of Polk Audio model 4's with the square tweeters (Dynamic I guess) for $30:00 which pair will with my Polk Audio model 7's. I was hoping someone could recommend a good match for a center speaker. Thanks.

I would highly recommend a CS400/400i. They have the same size/vintage drivers as your Monitor 7s - always a plus to have your front three timbre matched. I’m currently using the 400 with both my SDA-1C fronts and Monitor 7 (or 10) fronts, an awesome pairing.

Where are you located? Anywhere near the Minneapolis/St. Paul area? I have a CS400 in excellent condition that’s available.

Good luck, they do pop up from time to time. It is a great center. Very capable.

If you’re in the SLC hood, here are a couple of local listings that might fit the bill for you:

This dude is right off the freeway south of Orem, I’ve bought from him before.
    CSi3 for $80
    https://classifieds.ksl.com/listing/59422013
    CS245 for $50
    https://classifieds.ksl.com/listing/59439603

And this dude is selling three Monitor 4’s and a pair of RT8TL's in Provo:
    https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/214891613275141/
He’s been all over the place with the price. Probably could get the lot of them for $120.

I’m in Farmington, happy to help a fellow polkaholic!

My monitor 7's have one peerless and one silver tweeter (It's the way they were when I bought them) and I'd like to replace the silver with a peerless so I'll keep an eye on them thanks for the good info.

Make sure the two models are the same before you go swappin' tweeters willy-nilly. I am NOT the expert -- someone else here will know for sure -- but I reckon that the XO was different for the "Silver Coil" tweeter relative to the Peerless.

Now, if someone just dropped a Silver Coil dome tweeter in to replace a borked Peerless... well... that's a different matter.

I believe he is referring to SL1000 tweeter. They would fit the peerless cut out. I believe the xo was still a bit different than the peerless.

So I plugged in a Polk audio RM6000BD center I had lying around. It's not a match made in polk heaven but it will do until I find the CS400/400i center you all recommend. Thanks for all the good help I'll keep you posted.

I'd get that RTA8TL if I were you, that way the 7s can be used for what they're made for (music). And then you could add the 4s in for 7.1 or more.

I am using them for music. The model 4's are sitting behind my model 7's and on top of my Kef Q70's (which I have hooked up to a separate system for watching movies) and they (along with my model 7's) are used only for music. and Youtube. Thanks for the advice though.

Sorry, I assumed that since you were looking for a timber match for your 7s, that you were building a vintage surround setup.

Ya I can see that and I hadn't really considered it until you said something and your kind of right but the direction I'm trying to go is the best sound for music I can get on a budget.

I was poking around in the closet and you'll never guess what I found; A pair of Polk audio model 4's I picked up at the DI thrift store for $10 a year or two back. One of them needs a tweeter lead repaired which I started on a long while back and never finished which I guess is why they were in the closet. But the one that is working is a perfect timber match to use for my center so I will use that until I'm able to get a hold of the ever allusive cs400/400i. Thanks for the advice.

So I finally got around to hooking up the Polk audio CS245i center speaker I had lying around from a previous setup and I'll have to give it a week or two to see if it's a match made in Polk heaven but one thing is clear there's a noticeable difference between a center speaker and a book shelf speaker when used in the center position.

I'm using a CS250s with my RTA-11TL's with RD0-198 tweeters. They blend fairly well. My S8 blend even better since they have nearly the same tweeters.
