Want a brand new Trans-Am?

I had a '79 TA back in the day. Bought it for my 18th B-Day and absolutely loved that car. They are now out of business but the rights have been transferred to a new company that has teamed up with Hurst.

So.... that was published, it says, 19 hours ago... and it contains this curious comment.
The vehicle has even been endorsed by legendary actor and car enthusiast Burt Reynolds.

Last time I looked, the ol' Bandit himself was... umm... no longer available for celebrity endorsements.

EDIT: On the bright side, you might've identified @nooshinjohn's next car for him! :#

Part of him will be placed in the ashtray of the first 100 models sold.

ahh, sort of the like the Gene Roddenberry edition... or is the Keith Richards' Dad edition?

I remember that vintage of TA' well. Often I would see them in the rearview mirror of my 68 442. It could be difficult to tell if they were moving or parked.

Still a nice car for an 18 year old at the time.

My son had a 79 trans am in high school. He bought a 2002 trans am
A few years later. It was the 7th to the last one ever made.
That one ran rings around a 79. It's a shame they killed them off.
I never has one, but I did have a 69 firebird with a 400 for
    A short time.

I really liked the late 60's early 70's before they got robbed of power. The last few years they were made I really like that body style and it seemed they had some real power again. They were practically giving them away at the dealership around here. I would have liked to have a chunk of cash and a storage area to just have one of those last made.

one of the rich kids in high school had one. looked great but the 180hp going into that junk 3 speed auto just sucked. Being a rich brat he tore it all down and made it to what it should have been. 4 speed stick no smog just the pure mussel car it was to be.

The thing with kids and fast cars is the always wind up running into something at high speed,
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

When I was in high school and had my Z/28 there was a guy who had a 400 Firebird 4 speed who always wanted to race me. We raced probably 5-6 times and each time he was telling me how he would beat my Z. He never did and it usually wasn't that close either. Never ran into a Firebird or GTO that was that fast.

My '79 had the same motor. Olds 403. It was slow and the power curve didn't exactly match. The torque fell off before the short boost of HP took over. I don't even know if one could call it horsepower. With that said, I didn't buy it to race everyone.

As an 18 year old, it was the most beautiful car that I could afford.

Mint shape, original gold paint with the brown bird(s) and tan interior. Obviously because of the engine, it was automatic. Everything was stock except for the rims (told the original owner she could keep them) and tires. The only things I did to it was add a flex fan and air shocks in the back. The tires in the back were probably a foot and a half wide with the stock size in the front with the aluminum rims seen below. The rear ones were MUCH larger.

    v1bwo93rw6vg.png

I loved the car. I would swear they built that car to "fit me". 1 finger driving, seats for 4, even though the back passengers were uncomfortable, A/C, an interior that I loved, a dashboard that resembled a true race car and (Oh, this wasn't stock either) a stereo system (Kenwood with Alpine Speaks, 10 band EQ) that for some reason had some KILLER acoustics, the like of which I have not heard in a car since.

TBT, I'm glad it wasn't that fast of a car. I might not be here if it was. I think my current truck has more power than it but it damned sure ain't as fun to drive. Plus, the women don't look at my truck the same way as with the Trans Am. For an 18 year old? It was a dream car for me and it was fast enough for a first car.

  • During the 70's I had a 68 Chevelle SS396 and a then a 78 Camaro 350 (modified) 4 speed. The only T/A that could beat me in a drag race was a 70 T/A with a Ram Air III, 4 speed. That thing was quick and fast. Beautiful car, white with a blue stripe and black/blue interior. Also, there was a 73 Super Duty T/A, in the area, that I don't think I could beat. The rest of them (disco era T/A's) weren't very fast. These new Camaro/LS based T/A's are in a different league. There's a lot of horsepower to be found in those LS engines. Hook up a pair of hair dryers (turbos,) and you can maybe net as much 800, 900, maybe 1000 horsepower. Of course there's other mods you would probably have to employ, but in some cases, (a recent LS6 for example) not many . Crazy power.

Problem with those 70's and even the 80's turbo T/A is all the smog junk in them. come one a 403 V8 that only put out 180hp. My 65 Olds with the 330V8 would smoke one.

The rich kid pulled the motor replaced the pistons cam intake and carb, added headers with dual exhaust. The tranny and rear end were both changed at drag masters. Once done it was hard for anyone to beat him. He had to put almost as much as he paid for the car into it to make it work.

When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

My first muscle car was a 69 Roadrunner with a 383 and a 4 speed. It was a boat but a fast one. After that I always had Plymouth Dusters. I'd take a 400 bb, offset grind a forged 383 crank to fit bb Chevy h- beam rods and have custom pistons built. This would make a custom 426ci wedge.
Rotating weight was super light. I'd show up at the track with this ugly rusty looking thing, run a low 11 second quarter then get kicked out.
