Polyvinyl chloride ain't too environmentally friendly, so I guess we can make up for that, somewhat, with a "greener" turntable.

I believe that it's more viable to resurrect/refurbish an old 'table than it is to buy a new one. YMMV.

In seriousness (well, you know, kinda...), there is one potential problem with buying used turntables (compared to electronic components). There are numerous (at least several) precision, moving surfaces that are subject to normal wear and/or abnormal wear (abuse). Besides the obvious (i.e., the belt on a belt drive platter), for a vintage "normal" (swingin' arm) tt, one worries about the condition of the tonearm bearings (wear and play) and the platter bearing. One also worries about lubrication (of the main bearing at least; for semi-auto and auto tts, of multiple moving parts). In classic, vintage record changers (e.g., DUAL, Garrard), the mechanisms 1) are very complex and 2) have a tendency to gum up severely over the decades.

More modern linear-trackers have plenty of interesting things to go wrong, too -- especially the earlier linear trackers with rubber drive tires (e.g., the Rabco arms).

In other words, there's a lot to go wrong in vintage hifi components with moving parts (turntables and tape decks, first and foremost).

    Sorry

I inherited an old Technics sl j2 linear table with a basic AT cart of some sort, IYO would a nice Grado p mount be too much to spend on such an old table?

The Black is still available in P-mount, yes? If the tt is basically in good working order, I wouldn't hesitate to throw a Grado Black on it. No warranty express or implied, though ;)

I've read about lots of great benefits about bamboo being used for audio applications, and often compared to that of carbon fiber. So this table might not sound to bad at all.

    Found this interesting article:

What makes bamboo so effective in the audio world is its structure and the process that allows us to turn what is basically a massive fibrous grass into a flat board. The bamboo itself is formed from long bundles of cellulose fibers, bound together by lignin, a natural thermoplastic resin. The closer to the surface you get, the greater the density of those fibers. The result is not unlike natural carbon fiber, but considerably heavier. Take that structure and cut it into strips that can then be stacked face to face to create a single flat board and you have a random, composite, variable-density material -- which is just about ideal for dissipating mechanical energy effectively without converting it into a single, dominant resonant frequency the way that glass or MDF does. Great in theory -- how does it work in practice? Better than you are going to believe -- which is exactly why Atacama and Quadraspire have made it central to their product lines.
