Phase / Polarity

Hello all,

Just a query / clarification. When I have run the auto set up mic for various AV receivers, it always tells some of my speakers are out of phase / polarity. Checked all the wiring with red going to red and black going to black at the back of the AVR - checked the speakers and all good there too, until I delved a little deeper.

Did the speaker check with a 1.5 AA battery to check how the speaker cone reacts to both the positive cable to the positive of the battery and negative to the negative. Checked all speakers and found the LSiM707's are fine, BUT the LSiM 706C and LSim702 fx when connected the correct way, the driver goes in on the test, not out like it should with the battery connected. So the 3 speakers in question, internally are wired in reverse!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when connected correctly the drivers should come out and not go in? I have since plugged the black wiring into the red and vice versa on these 3 speakers and will check phase and polarity again, as now these 3 should now be in phase. I'm also expecting a richer sound as well.

Anyway, anyone else with these speakers might want to run a check as well. Let me know if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Thank you both for the link - but shouldn't the drivers still go out when connected correctly and not in?

Have you read the entire thread? Seems it’s by design.

When I run audyssey I get a out of phase error on my left and center. I swapped the L/R and still got the out of phase on the left so it was audyssey not the speaker.

With my S60's Audyssey would set the sub out of phase flip the sub to 180 and there is a ton of bass. Now with the LSiM the sub is best at 0 but I got the warning hit ignore and rocked on

Yes I did - if it is normal for the driver to go in, then that's fine, but the LSIm707 drivers go outward, which is what would be the norm as I know it to be (right or wrong). Checked the LSim703's and their drivers go in too.

If they are all correct and are designed that way, then I'll leave them and I'm not concerned about the auto calibration, just want the speaker drivers working as they should be.

Mistakes from Speaker companies can happen. They maybe by design but also maybe a mistake. I had our Sonance Rep come in bragging about this new Speaker bar they made. I listened to it and told him it's out of phase. He took it back and the engineer found a mis wire internally on the crossover.
When a speaker is out of phase it sounds thin when it's in phase it sound full.

Thanks everyone for your replies / input.

Just to support what you are saying Dan, I swapped the terminals around on my LSiM703’s this morning, had them connected as per specification and listened closely (tested them yesterday and drivers were going IN). Swapped them around so black to red and vice versa so the driver is coming out - so much more depth and not sounding thin like they did correctly connected. Thought they sounded OK before and still had bass but not like now.

Whether they are ‘designed’ that way or not, I’m sticking with connecting them in reverse. Always thought the LSiM 702’s sounded a little thin too, so keeping them and the LSiM706 in reverse as well so the drivers come out. Strange the LSiM 707’s are correct though, with drivers coming out when connected correctly. Makes me question if it is a manufacturing fault with all bar the 707’s. Would love a tech from Polk to clarify.
