Amp Advice For RTi’s

I am looking to purchase an amp for my RTi system - 10’s, 6’s, 4’s, and a CSi5, currently powered by an Onkyo 920. After looking used here, AVS, eBay, Audiogon, etc, I think I’m gonna look at a new Emotiva.

My question is should I get a 3 channel Gen. 3, and add channels if I think I need, or just go for a 5 channel? Emotiva charges $50, plus $200 per channel to add. Any help or experience would be appreciated.

Honestly I don't see any reason to add an amp to your system. You have a really nice system and I think a correct calibration might give you what you might be after.
Speaking of which why do you want to add a amp?

Well, many folks have said that RTi’s need power and really open up with a good amp. Hearing that, seems like they’re underpowered with 130 wpc (2 channels driven).

Should I not expect to hear a difference? You and the other folks on this forum have much more knowledge than me!

Just found out that Outlaw has 2200 monoblocks on sale - 3 for $799 shipped. 200 wpc. Anyone have experience with these?

Either the Emotiva or Outlaw would be a nice improvement. If I had to pick I’d choose the Outlaws over the Emotiva for the RTIs.

Thanks everyone - I think I’m going with the Outlaws since it seems like a great deal, and many folks think they’re a better fit for RTi’s , since they’re already a bright speaker, and the Emotiva is known to have a brighter sound.

I was considering LSIm’s, but I’m sticking with my current setup. Now if I had LSim’s the Emotiva seems like to would be a better choice - does that sound right?

I currently have a Parasound Halo A31 on my A9s and CSI A6, I've also had a Adcom 5503 on them. They both do a great job. I'm looking forward to hear what those Outlaw 2200s do for you as I considered them a time or two. Congratulations let us know how you like them once you got them up and running.

Night & day difference? Not really, but I was not expecting that. For movies & all channel music, the surround channels are louder, and the fronts are very clean sounding. The system plays louder with no strain whatsoever. No hiss or hum at any volume.

2 channel music sounds very nice - fuller, effortless sound, and more bass for sure!

I have my front stage also powered by 2200 moboblocks. Its not night and day, but if you plan on driving your speakers close to reference level, you will notice the difference. Having the monoblocks gives you a lot more headroom, and like you said it frees up power for your rear speakers powered by your amplifier. For the price, you really cant go wrong

They run pretty cool, and Outlaw says you can stack 3 with no issues.

I own RtiA9's with an XPA2 G3 and they are great! I own LsiM707's and I power them with Emotiva XPA - DR3... just wow. The DR amp is absolutely phenomenal. I didn't like the sound of the A9 with a monolith amp, which is very Very similar to the Outlaw. Maybe they lacked the power, I just thought they were a bit dull.

The Outlaw and Monolith are not as similar as you think. Especially the model being discussed. Outlaw has mostly moved away from ATI manufactured amps, with the exception of their 7900 model. The Monolith is an ATI manufactured amp, but none of them have anything in common with the current Outlaw lineup. Earlier Outlaw amps did use a chassis similar to that of the Monolith, as did most other ATI made amps. However, that does not suggest, the Monolith and the Outlaw would at all have the same sound signature.

I think that’s the point I was attempting to make. To say Outlaw and Monolith are “very very similar” because Outlaw used to have most of their amps manufactured by ATI is an incorrect assumption.
